  • Oh Ubisoft... Skull & Bones is here. Allegedly it's a 'AAAA' game. 10 years of development, and that's on top of prior work done on Assassins Creed 3 & Black Flag. What on earth happened?

    Is anyone else tired of hearing about entertainment companies charging insane prices for things, promising the greatest experience, and it barely holds up to games 10 years it's senior? Like why should people have to pay premium when people make games for free in their spare time that are more enjoyable?

      You don't get to say that I think X car is to expensive, that "everything" becoming an additional cost is wrong, that requiring more maintenance costs and ongoing fees just to meet their warranty requirements is wrong, and then be morally fine in stealing the car. You still are stealing that car.
      You want to pirate, I don't care and am not against it. But don't try to justify the theft to make yourself feel better about it.

    imagine buying a book and the publisher only allows you to turn a page every hour or only read 20 words per minute. There's a guy called Thor who's popping off in shorts but said something valid about video game pricing: for his video game he purposefully made it cheap for each local market which drastically reduced pirating. In his example he made his game permanently on sale for sub $5 in Brazil. That market is his largest now. Compare that to 'triple A' releases. Of course he was an indie developer with smaller overhead, but he still understood it was a product meant to be bought and played. Customers want good value for money, not a subscription for a good time. Red light districts have better on boarding than modern games.

It's why once I start a company I'm never going corporate till I die then they can do what they want. They felt that it was a good pirate game bolted onto already tired Assassin's Creed mechanics and the fact you had to leave your crew behind on the ship all the time so you could just sneak around by yourself, against the whole pirate theme, had people calling for a true full pirate experience.
    So, it's not that people LOVED Black Flag and were disappointed, it's that they found Black Flag wasn't quite what it could have been, had been clamoring for Ubisoft to do better, and they gave us WORSE. THAT is what's most infuriating about this.

    Singapore had a push for their youths in to the arts about 10-15 years ago. Which is why they now suddenly have a lot of young people graduating with art degrees but there aren't enough work for them. They also have a lot of youths from the region, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, China etc coming in to study the same art courses and many want to stay in Singapore, but there just aren't enough jobs for them. So they are supporting for game studios to come and operate in Singapore. What Singapore didn't do right is to ensuring that the end products are properly made and of a certain quality. This is just another example of government setting the laws but do not do it well enough, same as many other larger countries, US, UK, China etc. I think if the Singapore government is to continue down this path, they will not make the same mistake again.

    • @Shinkajo
      @Shinkajo 3 місяці тому +1

      And how would you legislate quality for art? If a game gets below certain metacritic rating, the studio has to pay the government back? You have a government board of video game experts who judge the games? Team of bureaucrats micromanaging everything?
      Ultimately why would the government even care? Their goal is to incentivise establishment of businesses and creation of jobs, not to ensure the quality of that product. All they can really do is try to make sure they help serious studios with a proper plan and structure, and not scammers or half-assers who have no idea what they are doing. And Ubisoft Singapore is a legit studio with 16 years of experience. It's not some random startup.

SoT is what made them shift gears mid-development and try to cash in on turning it into a copy of that. A lot of the problems that go into game development at these big studios is that there's never just a story or experience that the game is built around. Instead, they're always chasing "what will be popular?" And then they try to build a "popular" game. And that's what leads to all these management problems and even just "what is this game about?" problems.
    Having a unifying story or experience to base the game around helps keep the team on track and helps management know what their dev teams should be focusing on. And while things can change mid-development, it wouldn't be the massive set-back that we often see with these big titles where devs come out later and say that they had no idea what it was they were supposed to be making.

      @DeadPixel1105 Former Ubisoft dev here.
      There's a bunch of different engines being used internally, and each game customizes its engine quite a lot, so that's not the explanation.
      Also, what you're referring to are called the 3Cs (Character, Camera, Controls), and those are also tuned specifically for each game by dedicated gameplay programmers and game designers.
      What I think happens (because I've seen the games I personally worked on get that treatment) is that the team comes up with a bold vision of what the game should be and feel like, and through lots of internal review milestones from the editorial group at the top of the company, they're being advised (forced, really) to make it more like Far Cry or AC, little by little, until you get a clone with only the setting being specific to your new game.
      It's extremely frustrating to see the potential being wasted as development progresses, because you get sold an interesting fantasy that takes risks, and then you feel betrayed because all of the interesting bits get stripped out until you have a grindy generic Ubisoft open world left that you're not all that proud to see come out

    AAAA? Honestly I would struggle to find a good reason to buy the game for £30 let alone £70. This is a game that is very light on worthwhile content but heavy as in ridiculously heavy on monetization. What gameplay exists is over simplified without good reason, this has to be an unfinished game, nothing else makes sense!

      This game isn't heavy in monetization.. I'm kingpin rank (endgame in about a weeks worth of time).. They dont even have that many cosmetics available yet which is crazy free money for them. Multiple open betas and free 8 hour trial...No tricks you know what you get.

If you store all the stuff that you WILL need (mainly ammo) you will do better (crafting wise) later in the game

    Ubisoft is trying to be the next Blizzard, but failing hard at it. I absolutely hate their launcher. I hate the fact that they feel the need to tack denuvo on everything as if that's ever going to stop hackers. It only succeeds in creating a worse experience for peoples who buy the game. They added microtransactions in almost all of their most recent games. They pulled their games from the Steam store for a while and only recently re-added them (I wonder why?). They seem to have forgotten that the most basic thing that a game has to do is be fun to play.

      I suspected it before, but am now more convinced, that they never really had any serious expectations of it being anything more than a low/minimum effort box ticking exercise to fulfil whatever legal obligations they had with the Singaporean government. That Singapore studio has worked on every Assassin's Creed game since AC II. So Ubisoft has used that studio to get work done for mainline titles in the series done on the cheap thanks to the tax breaks they've received for a decade and a half.

    Honestly your explanation of the perils of GaaS are spot on. The only thing you've overlooked is the GaaS games being quietly abandoned while their cash shops remain as active as ever, giving the impression the company is still invested in the game they've created but only very cynically.
    Darktide, for example, is now a second priority to the management of Fatshark who've begun hiring people for an unannounced UE5 project. The game has received no major update in almost 3-4 months besides cosmetic hotfixes and there is no news of anything coming.
