Needed to chime in here. I am a professional editor in the industry. The line about "not needing a reel" is inaccurate. It's usually the first thing a post house or client asks for. Not everyone is going to spend time to shift through all your videos on your site. The quickest glance they get is by watching a reel. I also need to reiterate that a reel doesn't just "show you know how to cut to music". It's an opportunity to demonstrate how you can weave the diversity of your content in one spot. It also helps illustrate sound design, how you incorporate sound ups etc. The comments about design are helpful (as I am not a designer). Anyone who watches this and thinks they don't need a "reel" that's blatantly incorrect.
Be careful of conflicts of interest with employers when it comes to public portfolios and reels. I know a youtuber who just got bit in the butt for that. Thanks for the upload Kelsey! I found your channel yesterday. Great stuff.
True, you definitely need to make sure you have permission to showcase certain work, you can always password protect some work and give that PW to people who are interested in your work :-)
thanks for this. its motivated me to get my portfolio together already. been working professionally for 7 years at the same place with no portfolio at all and ahh its about that time 😅
Thanks greatly for this awesome and well-packaged video portfolio. You keep giving us the best to better our video editing dexterity. I hope to be good as you. All the best!
Thank you very much for this video, it was quite inspiring. I love to see the work and came here because I'm building my portfolio site and wanted to get some tips as well as inspiration.
Thank you so much for the content!! I just landed here and I am loving this channel!! :) I got a question, are those screecaps only on the portfolio or the whole video? Thanks again
I do mention behance at the end as an option for those who don’t want to spend the time to design a site. But again, a well designed site will stand out in the crowd :)
Hmm, perhaps. But thinking from an Employer’s perspective, think it would be better to organize those videos into a website, embed them and categorize them by genre // detail your role etc.
I thought that too, but the people I know who have a website are taken more “seriously” by many clients than having a youtube playlist, it transmits another vibe. That’s why I am making a site :)
I love this video but how do you create a video portfolio if you work for a corporate company but don't have an outside video production business. I was made into a video editor from inside the company I work for coming from a Graphic Design background. So in order for me to use videos that I have created I would need to go into my companies video folder, which is proprietary to them, and create something. Would that put me in a bad position to using material that technically isn't mine, even though I made it? Thoughts.
I have a lot of tutorials on my channel! I also have a course website that organizes my tutorials from start to finish into a Premiere Pro course: learnpremiere.video
Is it too complicated for viewers if I am a video editor, photographer, film developer (dark room, etc), and musician? If I want to only send out a password-protected page for employers who want to hire me for video editing, is that too much for them if they see all of that on one website and overcomplicated? AND does the website have to be my name or can it be my business name?
I think maybe you could organize your website to have menu and page for each category you specialize in, so 1 page for editing, 1 for photography and so on... it can be your business name as long as you have an about me page with your name and a little bit about you for personal touch!
Can I just get a video that isn't biased from a sponsor? I just want an honest opinion, but everyone selling something. I would like to know free, and paid, but I gotta search the entire web, because she wanna sell us, instead of inform us.
Wow. I am so honored to be featured 😭 thank you so much!
I love love love your site Sarah! So creative :-)
I wanted to know, do you upload your work directly to your hosting, or do you use a video hosting site?

must i create my portfolio on website? the reason I'm asking is i was asked to create a digital portfolio that is sharable and doesn't have a link
Hello. what do you think of Behance as an online portfolio?
I do mention behance at the end as an option for those who don’t want to spend the time to design a site. But again, a well designed site will stand out in the crowd :)
Is it okay to use a UA-cam playlist as your portfolio?
Hmm, perhaps. But thinking from an Employer’s perspective, think it would be better to organize those videos into a website, embed them and categorize them by genre // detail your role etc.
