  • Part 1 (of 2) video measuring handlebar vibrations on a 2016 BMW R1200GS Adventure motorcycle to determine why my hands get numb while riding. This video reviews the setup on the bike for taking vibration measurements with a portable data acquisition device from Vibration Research (ObserVR1000) and Dytran's triaxial accelerometer mounted on the handlebars. Part 2 will cover the vibration analysis during idle and running through the gears and RPM ranges.

      @IronHorseGladiator - good intentions! But you're right, should have thought this video through more. I plan to re-do, wanted to see how important a topic this issue by virtue ot views and comments. It's on the list. If you have anything specific you'd like to see please let me know. Thanks!

    I have a 2018 GSA (absolutely love it) and I think it's very cool that you took the time to do this test. However, there was one important factor I didn't hear made mention of in this video. I believe when people complain about excessive felt handle bar vibration and it's numbing affects, that complaint is regarding the felt vibrations from sustained cruising engine RPMs while being in gear and under some load. I could be wrong but I think those interacting harmonic factors towards the engine, will heavily influence the end result of the produced handle bar vibrations measured... compared to a out of gear and unloaded engine.

      Yes, you make a good point about the cruising speed. I was going to share the vibration data I collected in my next video, but the focus was going to be on showing the vibration amplitudes with gear position and RPM. I was going to show both time waveform and corresponding frequency content. The recorded data I have is on a flat smooth road and moving through the gears and varying the RPM's. I did not record at a constant speed with and without loading (I assume by loading you mean uphill vs downhill vs various terrain?). My exercise is to produce an acceleration number, both peak and rms values, at the different frequencies where they were the highest. I can also filter out frequencies if needed, to focus on a frequency range that most humans are most sensitive to (16-26Hz). Of course I am not a hand and body vibration expert, just want to share this data under a set of conditions and let people come to their own conclusions. I am also willing to take measurements on other motor bikes for comparative purposes, but I would need volunteers with motor bikes to do so.

      So did you ever resolve the numb hand issue? I have a yamaha super tenere 2017 and i am having a real problem with vibration to the point of getting rid of it. This bike is a great bike but it is the most vibration sensitive I have ever owned. And I have owned a lot of bikes..

    • @zooskifilms
      @zooskifilms  4 роки тому +2

      @@jimwms1able - I haven't resolved it. Actually my intent was to measure it and try to relate it to other types of vibrations people are exposed to. I didn't really have a plan to make some changes to reduce it, but that might a good video to make. I also have an older BMW R100/7 that has much more vibration and makes my hand go numb quickly. I know there are counter weights you can install on the end of the handle bars, I'll investigate and determine if there's a good video in there somewhere.

    I had numbing in both hands riding MX bikes. Got carpal tunnel surgery on both hands and no more numbness. Just a thought.

      @cdrseabee - Thanks for the comment! I've been on a computer most of my career and get the same numbness when using it if I don't shake out the hands periodically. I'm sure I have carpal tunnel, just hate to go under the knife. I'm sure I'll have to some day. Thanks again!

      @@zooskifilms Yes the cause is CTS. get the surgery, as it will most likely get worse! Let is go and nerves will be permanent damage!
      TIP from someone who has been through this. Make sure your surgeon specializes in CT / hand surgery. HE MUST ONLY do that. My first surgeon was only an orthopedic and EF'd me up!!! BADDDDD!!!!
      Had to have it redone by a orthopedic that specialize in HANDS.

      @drewmorg - Unfortunately not yet. I decided to re-do the series on handlebar vibration for several reasons. Plan is to do one video that covers the measurement and then methods to reduce the vibration. Look for the video ln a few months. Thanks!

    I too have felt this ’quite severe’ vibration, but only on shutting throttle. It was so severe it made both feet and hands numb over 50 mile trip. It totally disappeared when you slightly open throttle and apply the smallest of load. This is on a1250 GS 2020 model. I tried this on another GS, same year with same vibration. You'd think BMwould not have these issues today! Stopped me buying one!

      Interesting. Some people have complained about vibration when the bike is under load. For me it's the vibration over time, my hands get numb holding it in one position for too long. I assumed it was just fatigue, but wanted to quantify by doing this test. I really need to finish the second part of this video and try it over various conditions. There is a hand and body vibration standard that has recommendations for how much you should expose yourself to. I will include that as informational as well.

      BMW doesn't care.......it is always NFF or operating within spec....on test rides they never feel anything and when abnormal sound are so obvious that people standing around comment on them, they cant hear anything
