Thank you. I have been reading this poem for decades--and loving it. (Me: BA English '79; MA English '82; spent a couple of years working on the Ph.D.; taught freshman composition at various times.) I'm old now; I turned sixty-seven in September. I'm struggling with a heart problem. This poem means more to me each day. Thanks, too, for commenting on the beauty of some of the lines. Tennyson wrote some of the most gorgeous lines ever.
Tennyson is my great++++++ Grandfather. I looked you up because my son had an assignment. His professor is an excellent teacher and I respect him very much. My son was blown away that he had such a great relative.
"They know not me" U is differentiating rhe sedentary life of the town folk vs.the exploratory life he desires. "They know not the difference" Same theme is explored in Mishima, " The sailor who fell from Grace with the Sea"
1:08 Ithaca just reminds me of the movie ROAD TRIP, where 4 dudes travel to ITHACA UNIVERSITY to intercept a VHS tape sent to the main guy's gf. Of course, it is based on the #Odyssey .
This was very helpful analysis - I am working on a writing an address and wanted to use some Tennyson. I've always been a Charge of the Light Brigade guy, but there are some gems (as you point out) in Ulysses as well. I never made the Dante connection... maybe I should get a refund for my English degree... :-) .... Anyway, as a thank you, I bought "Firian Rising" ... best wishes in your endeavors.
Thank you very much indeed for such a professionally made video. You are crystal clear in your explanations. I really liked your references to other works such as Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and the bible, but also to Theodor Roosevelt’s famous speech ‘The Man in the Arena’. By the way, being from London, I just love that Baker Street souvenir magnet. Please keep making videos, you are quite brilliant.
Ad Astra Per Aspera! We soon set upon the next epoch of life ever evolving through our struggles we set sail amid uncertainty and seek within the universal truths that guide us towards the light of stars and the power of knowledge, courage, and heroic hearts of equal temper. To arcadia and eternity we bridge the long arch of history to peace and prosperity among the gods

It's not too late another world to seek;
Be bold, be strong; do not be meek and weak.
Outstanding analysis! Loved it and your voice is awesome!

So glad I could help! Yes, I prefer Ulysses to Charge of the Light Brigade, myself. Enjoy Firian Rising 😁

Just a little nit to pick -- Ulysses takes only ten years to get back home, not 20.
The Trojan War takes ten years before he heads back, so it comes to about twenty years total
