Some suggestions: What about try using Windows ME?(larger RAM limit support) I tried not to rely too much on KernelEx(you can install Java 6 build 7 which is last support on 9x system,and using jar launcher which still works today,meaning you don't need to install the new launcher to launch the old launcher) the only thing it needs KernelEX is lwjgl.dll(I don't have an 9x compatible machine to try this so I have done fire up the launcher and try to launch the game in VM)
Very nice and encouraging build. I just finished getting the essential parts for my 98/XP hybrid system. And i also went for a 6800GT and a Athlon 64 x2 but a 4200. I don't know what motherboard you have but i ended up with the ASUS A8V. Its going to be fun tweaking it to be stable and seeing your result indeed confirms that it should be possible. I wonder which 6800GT you have though, it has a NV40 and a NV48 version and i unfortunately ended up with the latter. So i hope my board and Win98 will like it since its pci bridged to agp instead of a real agp card like the NV40 version.
In my experience settting the sata port as ide/pata instead of ahci awready makes 98 work happily with it. In installed sucefully win98 in: -Core2duo (pentium dualcore) philco php14545 with sis m672fx chipset (and no drivers) -sandybridge i5 2450m positivo 5410m, most drivers didnt work. -pcchips p23g (its sata 1 anyway no ahci to mess 98 anyway).
Lol your 98 machine is waaaaay better than my xp machine (and my childhood pc): -biostar m7vkq (not the pro :/) -Amd duron 1200mhz -768mb of 133mhz sdram -Integrated trident blade 3d (there's no agp in the mb ;-;) -20gb samsung (dying) ide drive. -Xp sp3 jerryrigged on top of xp home. I will most likelly transform it into my win95 machine or a msdos machine with a 700mhz duron, as its not much usefull in the current state.
I did not see any noticeable improvement when doing that, the graphics isn't what makes it lag it's the limitation of only being able to use one core. It runs rather good when running it under Windows XP with even higher settings because it got full access to the two cores so I'm sure that is the reason, which makes sense because Minecraft really is heavy on the CPU side of things.

Well it's supposed to be as fast as possible so it can close several gaps, with the several OSs it can now run.
Also yeah a 9x OS would be more suitable for that hardware in my opinion

It could also probably work, still 98 SE is superior so I'm not going to bother putting 95 on this machine.
