I followed all your steps got the boot screen as well but when selecting the new kernel it says " end kernel panic - not syncing: system is deadlock on memory". Dont think it would be memory problem as I have allocated approx 65 gb to vbox
I am trying to add a new system call that uses string.h and stdlib.h but compiliation ends by giving error(implicit declaration) but it works fine if I compile using gcc

Use
make -jx (where x = 2* (number of CPU cores )
to compile kernel in 40-60 min instead of 3 hours
well i think x should be x=number of cores.you will get worse if you put twice
