  • Chartres, a city in north-central France southwest of Paris, is famed for its massive Cathédrale Notre-Dame. Long renowned as "one of the most beautiful and historically significant cathedrals in all of Europe," it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979, which called it "the high point of French Gothic art" and a "masterpiece". The Gothic cathedral, completed in 1220, features Romanesque sculptures, pavement labyrinth and elaborate rose windows.
