Vincent was my uncle, and he was the greatest gentleman you could ever meet. I'm glad he was recognized for what he contributed to Irish music. Thank you, TG4.
Hi Amy. I'm Dolly's son Tony, your dad's cousin. I was at many events over the years, some happy and some sad, with your dad and all the gang from Cosmona, Carramore and Mullagh. Your grandfather Peter and your uncle Pat were fantastic players, but truly, it's in everyone's blood down there.
RIP Vincent - a proper stalwart of the East Galway flute style. Flute players are indebted to him for his compositions, all of which fit so comfortably on the instrument. The first tune here is called "The New Broom" and, I think the second one is called "The Mountain Stream" but can't be sure. Thanks Vincent.
When I was a little boy Vincent often played a tune in my family’s house in Drimnagh and he lived, yes I know that he was from outside Loughrea, but he lived the bigger portion of his life in Walkingstown , Dublin the parish next to mine. This also meant that besides The Master Vincent some of our other neighbors included, Tommy Wreck and fiddler Tommy Potts. The cardigan/sweater he wears in photos really brought me back as that was mostly his choice of style.
The Tony Smith he credits with transcribing his tunes is also known as Antóin Mac Gabhann, a great fiddler and teacher and champion of Broderick's music.
Great stuff, and what a brilliant set of tunes Mr broderick left us with. I don't speak Irish - did anyone pick up what the tune names were for the set played? Thanks glenman!
Thank you for this upload, Donal. Well worth seeing. Best wishes.
