4 people were absolute muppets for not liking the video. The sound of that engine gave me goosebumps, I could feel the push/pull from here. Same age as my 2004 Astra H and I want it!
Love the Legacy, was such a svelte car at the time and now they're criminally cheap! A hidden gem in the used market. The alloys are from a much newer Subaru XV.
It's good, lets us have the fun until other fools catch on far too late, when these will be scarce or in hands of loving owners who will never let it go, so it will join the club or japanese sporty specials and cost 5 times as much as it does now.
I like the look of it all apart from the front bumper, but really, the GC8 was their only decent car, my ex had a Club Spec Evo 4 with a VF34 and 23psi, god I loved that thing, till the box blew after like 3 or 4 weeks and she was driving it totally normally
Until 5th gen that is. 5th Generation is just awful and generic at the same time. No more glass canopy all around and more blaoted and overweight car aside of that.
The SpecB Legacy is an all round superb motor, in flat 6 6MT guise its fantastic and has the speed, reliability, specification, handling in all weather conditions, engine note and rarity you will not find elsewhere.
I have never even sat inside a Subaru let alone driven one. But that car looked very impressive. Good looking, spacious, well equipped and obviously fast :)
Im on my second spec b, theyre bulletproof, both saloons. Fantastic cars, the noise is addictive. O - 60 is 6.5 seconds and with si drive (face lifted model 2006 onwards) 34 mpg is regularly achievable. Do not be tempted by a 5 speed auto spec b as it limits the full potential of this car. 4wd is also a fantrastic feature, I was going places 4wd crossovers and some suvs couldn't during the heavy snow this winter on premium all season tyres. Great used car prices £2.5K - £7K gets you one. Anyway that's enough from me - other 4wd sporty cars are available, theyre just not as quirky or rare as the spec b.
After owning Ford, Suzuki and Toyota (in North America) I bought a 2010 Subaru Impreza and I quickly became a convert although the dealership was a dissapointment. Subies add an extra level of adventure to your life that probably wasn't there before. 😊
I had driving lessons in a Subaru Leone, through a blocked street I had to drive backwards immediately, my driver's license with 17 driving lessons. Unfortunately, you do not see so many Subaru's in the Netherlands.
Wait, you got the Legacy 3.0 H6 with a MANUAL?! Mind blown. We never got am H6 Legacy with a manual in the US. That is sweet. Only flat six Subarus we got was the old and odd XT-6 model.
For a 14 year old car it still look really modern inside and out those seats look similar to the Ford Mondeo. You can really see the toque when you first pulled away I thought you wasn’t hanging about. The owner Mike was cool 😎. Thanks for another great video.
Dude I remember searching videos about Citroen XM on youtube and finding you... Now I search my new love Subaru Legacy and there you are again. Cheers man, great taste.
Good review. I used to have a BP then my brother bought it. It's still heavily waxed so it looks like it's laminated. The car looks so good even after 15 years.
Hey, I've got one of these. It is possible to replace the stereo with a double DIN unit, but you need a new fascia. There was a chap who sold them on ebay a couple of years back. I know quite a lot about the stereo, because my CD player broke as well, but I replaced mine.
I've read that these earlier models had a bad head gasket problems up until 2014.I own a 2016 Outback 2.5 with the CVT trans. its fine for my driving style but a lot of people hate the trans. Other auto makers are also using the CVT like Nissan and Honda.I can achieve 36 mpg on the highway, very good for a nice sized car weighing about 3600.
I not too long ago bought a 98 Legacy GT-B Twin Turbo Manual. 280bhp from Factory, Bilstein suspension from Factory. And weighs just over 1400KG. That's the same as a modern day Golf. It's more fun to drive than Imprezas I have owned in the past because of how effortlessly it gains speed, and surprisingly it's flatter in the corners too.
Charley like our grandson and granddaughter Like the peddle well down with grandad on the safe places to give our 2.3 focus a good run. I really enjoy watching our family friend the Hub Nut.
I have a Legacy 3.0RN Auto Saloon and that is the nicest car to cruise in, its so soft it shrugs off any bump and the engine is great so smooth and powerful gets you into trouble as it doesn't feel as fast as you are going
Great vlog. I have the 2017 version of this car. When I look inside, nothing much has changed rather just upgraded, but it does include the Eyesight drive assist setup, but alas the rimless windows are gone. This is my 3rd Subaru, which previously included a 1974 Leone sedan and a 1984 Leone Sportswagon with 2WD and 4WD (replete with high and low range) and both these cars had the rimless glass.
Almost bought an automatic version of one of these some years back until I saw the mpg reading 15 at which point I ended the test drive as quickly and politely as I could. Never regretted the decision although in all other respects it was a beautiful car.
John North, they did do a diesel version of these, though not sure one could spec it with an Auto, and mpg was only up into low 30s if driven carefully. However, what you spent on fuel, you saved in repair costs. These things just never break if looked after properly. A colleague did 80k in 4 years in hers and all she ever did was service it and replace consumables. Great cars, and if I ever need a large estate car, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
Owning a 2005 Liberty 3.0r spec.B H6 6mt is honestly a god send. For only $7000 (AUD) and 150,000km on the clock its such a great deal. Only issue being previous owners destroyed the clutch, but you'll understand why if you read into what these cars feel and sound like to drive. The sedan variant is a little lighter than the wagon, so little less fuel consumption but you'll be going into the high revs if you really want to hear this gorgeous engine tone. Love it
You got one! What an excellent vehicle, nearly as fast as a turbo Subaru but you don't need a baseball cap to drive it. Can stick the dogs in the back too. This legacy generation is the best I think but I like how similar the platform was for so long. This is probably the best Legacy they made I think, my favourite was a first generation I had with a hi-lo ratio gearbox though.
Hi Ian, I can remember the old legacys,i used to clean them back in the day, they were nice but this one certainly has some punch and looks a lot better, thw wheels are nice as well, the suspension looked a bit hard though, awesome review.
I own a jdm 03 lgt spec b, makes 280. Currently has a diff and a trans out of an 08 wrx. I’d absolutely kill for this stock engine/trans combo though. Amazing
Hmm much as i suspected i think i’d like this too. Although i hanker after a “Outback” old shape legacy as i like the 90’s interior but same engine . Want .
Michael Gibson Yes actually that’s a good point most of the ones i’ve seen of the “ Outback variety” have problems with rot or electrics .. i own a WRX impreza ( Uk version) and as much as i love it it pisses me off for certain aspects .. maybe i should investigate the spec B such as yours .. but i’d probably keep my impreza as well just to annoy the wife 😂
Just go for anything with the H6, and buy on condition. Or buy one of the many just one minor issue from being weighed in, and see if you like it! I had an NA Impreza 5 door a few years ago, and it just felt like the platform could handle so much more power, but I didn't fancy the licence-losing game that a turbo seems to be for me
Michael Gibson Thanks bought an impreza due to it being a car i’d always wanted to own, i love it the handling is sublime but they are not without they’re issues (mines been reliable but rear arches are an issue and it’s not a car that makes me feel like i’m doing well in car world ) .. cheers
Like most modern-ish cars, I think the estate version of the Legacy looks better than the saloon. It's a good overall shape without styling for its own sake. And that's exactly what makes it stylish in my eyes. I get the feeling this would be a much better proposition as a daily driver than a WRX as long as fuel bills don't become an issue. Then again, no one's gonna buy a 3 litre car if they're worried about that...
Cheers Ian....Never seen you so quiet in a car!...lol...Always liked the Legacy, just never got around to owning one....I fear I may have missed out. :-(
still love my 05 3.0R wagon. 5AT is actually not terrible. Owned it for 12 years - regularly serviced, and other than wheel bearings and bushings no trouble. She's getting on now almost 250K km. Love the speed, space and touring comfort. Of all the options I personally don't care for sun rooves, but I do like the dark rear window factory tint, zenons and the window monsoons if you can get them. Good tyres makes a big difference to handling - turn in gets real nice. The only problem is what to get next? (I hate how everything is an SUV now - yes that's me up your arse in the corners) and also the fuel consumption. I average a disgraceful 7km/l (17mpg)
I have got the Subaru Legacy estate diesel with a lot less power than what you've got in yours wheels has 246 BHP or something like that and mine is 147 bhp still love driving mine had mine just over a year it's only just done 76000 and I tow a caravan with my great fun
Brother-in-law recently binned his - the bottom had rusted out - 04 I think it was - incredibly well equipped for its age but the 3l 6 cyl mated to the auto did like a drink. However he hung on as long as he could as he liked it so much
Here is some torque information 180KW is only if you run 98+ octane and the thing isnt pinging (which they are notorious for), and if the DBW feels like giving you 100% throttle, and if you rev the thing to the limiter. It only has 160lb-ft at 1000 rpm, raising to 200lb-ft by 4000 rpm carrying to 5000 and falling back down to 160lb-ft again by 6500 rpm. This means that it feels like it has "enough" torque from 3500 to 5000 rpm, but if you're outside of that, if feels lackluster. Under 3500 it feels gutless and its quite hard to do a hillstart.
If I could afford the fuel bills I would have one of these and never let it go because the Legacy Estate is all of the car I'd ever need. It's practical, really nice to look at and travel in, got the power without the need for a turbo.....I could go on but I'd bore even me!!!
I adore these, always fancied either exactly the same as this one or a bog-standard 2.0 saloon. As an apprentice at the local dealer I got good at changing lower arm bushes (they go through them fairly quickly) and setting up suspension geometry. Very satisfying to get perfect, transforms the handling with it all lined up! Still one of my favourite cars to drive! The rear spark plugs are extra fun to change however.....
nice car ian love the legacys ,owned 2 an early one and a twin turbo one which wasn't as quick as you would think but brilliant tow car.with the low ratio pulled a big boat up the lanch ramp no trouble . ps owners looks a happy cool dude !!
I think the reason Subaru chose Liberty instead of Legacy in Australia. Is because the charity you mentioned Legacy was established to help the wives of dead soldiers financially after the world wars. and Subaru being a Japanese company didn't want to be seen as insulting to a war charity.
Wonder if the CD player needs a new relay or fuse maybe? Or even a software reset perhaps possible? For an 05 plate its condition could pass for a brand new car it looks that good. Lovely colour too. She does go a bit. Imagine a system on turbocharged cars where you can switch off the turbo when youre not in the mood for on off peppiness.
Turbocharged cars can be driven gently. You don't have to hammer them, it just becomes addictive. Turbocharger adds efficiency even with light throttle openings.
There is a 4th function on the entertainment console for a cd changer. Mine was quite cheaply rewired to a jack in the centre console which is super handy
Here in the U.S. we got the flat 6 Legacy as the LL Bean ed, I wished they would have brought over this B spec model. Here in the U.S for some reason we never get cars like this, yes there was the Legacy GT with the turbo 4 but I don't ever recall in the earlier 2000s ever having the flat 6 in anything but the LL Bean ed and if I remember correctly the GT pkg at that time only came in a 4d sedan. As for the Legacy and the Outback the newer ones are too bloated, the ones I like are the gen 1 and 2 late 80s (mid 90s for the Outback) upto about 2000, I wish Subaru would have continued to make the Outback SUS 4dr sedan, but that was a good model for a short time.
Love this channel! My hero! It's nice to know there are other people making long journeys in cars with a 50/50 or less chance of making it! Just out of interest, how many cars a year do you buy?
So why is the flat-6 such a sexy configuration? Other sixes seem a bit vanilla by comparison. I can't think of a better trump card in the motor kudos stakes. I'd love to see Subaru Mike, over on CareyHolzman, rebuild one of those puppies.
And I was starting to wonder if I had the only H6 engined Spec B in the UK. Clearly not. I can confirm the ride can be harsh and the economy is just non existent. The thing is you just need to put your foot down and any negatives are forgotten.
The city fuel consumption is a bit:D "funky" from 14 to 18 l/100 km yup:) but the highway is less or the same as 2.0 and 2.5 ~10/100:)...3.0r spec b here with 6mt:)
Really like the Legacy. One of my favourites in the Subaru lineup. Would you consider buying an old Justy AWD for winter in your neck of the woods Ian? Meant to be quite capable, although a little hard to find now.
HubNut Still have the Justy I bought new in 1990. One fault in 28 years.....the Hitachi distributor had an intermittent fault on the pick up wiring. No other faults......ever!! I have changed the front driveshaft gaiters after about 20 years. Chassis is perfect but there is some cosmetic rust in small areas around the wheel arches and battery box, and the bonnet paint has faded somewhat. My 2002 Forester, which I also bought new, has had one fault......the digital clock stopped working. Have changed both front discs and one front driveshaft gaiter after about 12 years. Also still have my 1958 100e Ford Anglia after buying it 46 years ago......but that’s a very different story.
I've always liked the idea of the subarus with the big H6 engine. An impreza with one in would no doubt be a substantial improvement - I'm sure someone has done it. Stick a moderate turbocharger on it and you've got something very competent that won't need rebuilding every 5 minutes. Sounds like a Porsche; but then it would being a boxer 6.
Not a single manual 3.0R here in France. You can find all sorts of BMWs in touring variant ... but when you start searching for some serious japanese hardware, it's a disaster.
I always think with that car,,,,,,,, you never go on "holiday" as a family,,,,,,,but an "adventure",,,,,,,,,,, Yeh I realy do like them as cars,,,, especially compared to new cars today. They're just "cool" ,,,,,,, gonna watch your video now. :-)
Hi,love the vids.Have you ever considered the Suzuki Liana .I have owned a 2002 1.6 GLX for 4 years and I can say it's the most reliable car I have ever owned.Drove it 1100 miles from Santander to Alicante in Spain with 98k on clock. If you see a cheap one under 400 quid you will be amazed.Mine is the hatchback model not the saloon as featured and thrashed and basically ridiculed by so called "stars"on Top Gear...just an idea for you, would live to see you test drive one.
I accidentally did a seamless mix between the end of Original Don (Flosstradamus remix) and the beginning of this video, and it worked surprisingly well.
Has no one taught you should always carry a compact cassette with you? Weird combo, satnav and cassette. I wonder how many cars had that as standard. Holy shit that seems to rev quickly. Got to love the torque curve of a boxer. Surprised it's so numb, direct and relatively uncomfortable. I'm regularly driving a 2007 Forester which is exactly the opposite of that. Why did you think you wouldn't like it? Not enough tractor. Trade it in for a Forester then!
Don't believe there was ever much crossover in parts, but some Subarus were badge-engineered as Saabs in some markets. You could get a Saab 'Impreza!' The 9-2X.
I bought an 07 saloon Spec b in the same colour a month ago. it’s an automatic though with flappy paddles. I would buy another one with the manual box. Lovely car just very thirsty.
P.s to the wife's dismay, I'm hooked back to classic cars from motorbikes, so wish I didn't sell my pre he jaguar xjs 1980 with Twr body kit ahhhh what a fool, mmmm do like a metro turbo thou, just how do I smuggle one past the wife......answers please lol

A properly understated and elegant motorcar and I think I want one especially with that engine. Beautiful engine notes.
I always liked that shape Legacy. They just seemed to get it “right”.
Best shape. Spot on lines. New Subarus are a bit blurgh

Very cool, quirky car! The H6 sounds fabulous - nothing beats a 6 cylinder for sound. Like these down to earth reviews
An 8 beats a 6 by a huge metric for sound

I had a 4th gen twinscroll which I sold too quickly. I've now got a 5th gen GT coming from Japan if you want to do an update test Ian.
nice car ian love the legacys ,owned 2 an early one and a twin turbo one which wasn't as quick as you would think but brilliant tow car.with the low ratio pulled a big boat up the lanch ramp no trouble . ps owners looks a happy cool dude !!
Another small child scared into therapy by Hub nuts lead foot. epic!
I think the reason Subaru chose Liberty instead of Legacy in Australia. Is because the charity you mentioned Legacy was established to help the wives of dead soldiers financially after the world wars. and Subaru being a Japanese company didn't want to be seen as insulting to a war charity.
and following on, because Subaru had taken the Liberty name, the Jeep Liberty retained the Cherokee name in Australia.
Great car, and good looking with the crosstrek rims :) I Have a Forester XT, not H6 unfortunately, but WRX H4 turbo :D
Great review & a very nice motor.
"Look, there’s my gimbal!” Had to google that to be sure you weren’t referring to any part of your anatomy!
Also - I want a Legacy now...
I've got one of those best car I've ever owned
The walk around at the start of the video should happen on all these reviews.
I am trying to standardise them, but the walk around doesn't always happen first. That complicates things when you haven't got a script. Or a plan...
That engine sounds so nice...
How is the clutch looking at buying one and dealer has stated very high biting point
beast of a car, i have the same in auto. Loves its fuel though
Lovely flat six, but more importantly the driver has a grab handle. Why do most cars deprive the driver of a handle when everyone else gets one?
Elizabeth Cherry there was a spec B in the US, but I think it was the 2.5 turbo, or the 2.0 twinscroll like Japan got. Very rare, too
Even more excited to pick mine up after this video
A young Henry the 8th is in da car!
Mr HUBNUT you are my favourite car guy . Could you please review the AUDI QUATTRO.
Love this channel! My hero! It's nice to know there are other people making long journeys in cars with a 50/50 or less chance of making it! Just out of interest, how many cars a year do you buy?
Six or seven is pretty usual. I actually have no desire to buy another car for the considerable future, though I've said that before...
OK, I have to ask, but how do you not attract attention from "the man" for owning so many cars in a year and not being a car dealer?
"not enough tractor", good logic there... :D
Big Kirby fan, just beautiful.
The owner. Of the Subura is a 2004 model, and is 2005 on a 05 reg!
I'll blame stagefright, it's a bit odd being on camera
Justy video coming soon! Not mine though. They rot too readily for Wales.
Bit quirky. Reminds me of my Saab 9-5 Aero estate. Huge fun, even on a run to the tip.
Try buying one of these in the US - they are a fortune. Subarus have some of the best resale values here
I've always liked the idea of the subarus with the big H6 engine.
That engine sounds great, it seems to go OK too.
I think I am going to get one of these. Lovely car although I am going for the 2L version :).
Look like you are rallying with legacy.. 😁
I need to do one really. Hopefully one day.
I accidentally did a seamless mix between the end of Original Don (Flosstradamus remix) and the beginning of this video, and it worked surprisingly well.
The bonnet catches are poor in my opinion. I've modified mine to only work on second catch and have put flush bonnet pins on.
Great cars
You should do the 2.0 turbo version.
I do what I can get my hands on, but who knows, maybe one day.
Another very pretty Japanese car. :-)
Neighbours had a Forester WRX. Terrifyingly quick, but again, no suspension at all really.
And as I've pointed out many a time before; I will never get why anyone would want that trade-off.
Would've loved an off-road demonstration :)
Lovely machine, shame they didn't do these in a 3.0 turbocharged diesel variant.
It has a bit of Saab about it. GM owned Saab and at one point GM had a share in Subaru and Subaru had some Saab parts. Hence the resemblance.
Don't believe there was ever much crossover in parts, but some Subarus were badge-engineered as Saabs in some markets. You could get a Saab 'Impreza!' The 9-2X.
Good quality car. Is it really that heavy on mpg ,I wouldn't mind one my self. Love these.
Subarus are often thirsty sadly. Managed to get 36mpg out of an Impreza Turbo once, but my Legacy 2-litre non-turbo generally did 27mpg.
I had one for 3 years. Was definitely a sleeper. Saw off the boy racers in their Golf GTi's. Only real nag was i never got more than about 23 MPG
Haha haha👍💪💪
I bought an 07 saloon Spec b in the same colour a month ago. it’s an automatic though with flappy paddles. I would buy another one with the manual box.
Lovely car just very thirsty.
P.s to the wife's dismay, I'm hooked back to classic cars from motorbikes, so wish I didn't sell my pre he jaguar xjs 1980 with Twr body kit ahhhh what a fool, mmmm do like a metro turbo thou, just how do I smuggle one past the wife......answers please lol
i like the face of the owner
And who said that UA-cam comments were creepy?
nothing creepy in my last comment
cacaaleau I suppose that depends on your perspective! As the owner..!
Probably the best colour for these.
He must be visiting petrol stations very often even more if it was a automatic. I would still have one though.
