SOOOO, when was this made? I did enjoy hearing these perspectives and would really like to hear about love and marriage from the 80s to now. As I sit here in my 50s, single and few to no prospects of a relationship, it seems that most of my peers are very cut off and disillusioned with any kind of relationship.

But I do agree I'd love to see a show about how different it is now compared to when I started dating in the mid 90's. It was better back then! I don't know what went wrong but things have gone right the hell downhill! Obviously, the internet and dreaded online dating has had some part in it. But also many people are not being raised with the idea of marriage and kids being the norm anymore. Which is ok but it should also be discussed that marriage still has value. Everyone being alone and jumping from one crappy relationship to another is what has come out of it. Most men don't think they ever have to get married or even have a serious relationship and that is almost celebrated. Same with women but to a lesser degree. Fascinating as I grew up when all this was happening. Interestingly enough both of my parents worked , my brother and I were latchkey kids before it was normal. Fast forward to the mid seventies I couldn’t date a guy for more than a month afore me da wanted me to marry them…fortunately me mum would have none of it and encouraged me to be an independent working gal before marriage, the tug of war made me crazy. But of course my mom had problems with premarital sex too, which was just not happening. The whole time was so confusing. I think the mixed messages of the time led to many unfortunate marriages….. I do need to add that my parents were married for nearly sixty years….

He hadn't dated as much because he'd had a long time high school girlfriend but he was certainly far more experienced with sex than I was so it evened out things I guess. We were both head over heals immediately and there was no question that we would start dating and soon no question that we would get married. Good thing I told him we should just wait to be officially engaged until after we graduated college. I was not getting married at 19/20 and my parents would not have been thrilled by any means. This was the late 90's so people didn't usually get married that young then though a few of my friends did.

Obviously lots of things have changed for the better since the 1960’s but has the whole courtship/dating/marriage scene gotten better? I would suggest it’s worse now than ever before with online dating and fewer opportunities to meet people in person, not to mention people having fewer social skills than in previous times. Everyone is glued to their phones and not joining clubs and participating in sport in the same ways as before etc. I was born in the 60’s so was dating in the 80’s and by golly I’m glad I was young then not now. My 30 year old daughter has never even had a proper boyfriend. Too many Tinder dates just want sex not a relationship and she’s not into that. It’s a lot harder these days to connect romantically. Monogamy has a lot going for it if you choose wisely😉
This is the 3rd documentary I'm watching on this topic; first the marriages in 1820-1900 Victorian time, then the marriages from 1900-1960 and now this 1960+ one. It seems every generation has changed things for the better but at the same time had a lot of struggles aswell. I myself grew up in the 90s/2000s and I agree with you that this situationships and online dating is very confusing. But in the Victorian time video they mentioned women were basically R* a lot and everyone was having affairs and in the 1900 video they mentioned that in the end of 1800s/beginning of 1900s women were like purity slaves to their husbands. Then I guess compared to those times the dating scene we have now at least gives women more freedom and safety. I wonder what struggles and improvements the next generation will face in their dating/marriage journey.

According to 2000 years of Christian tradition, both were expected to be virgins. That was the 'norm' up until at least the 1920's. Of course, men were more likely to have had sexual relations before marriage, but the percentage was low. With more women open to sex before marriage, there was clearly more opportunity. Most men found this type of women as "not the marrying kind" and the expectation of women to be virgins on their wedding day was high if she expected to marry well.
I don’t doubt this happens, but from my own experience in school throughout university, and the combined experience from those in my age group, the only virgins I’ve seen get shamed, and rightfully so, are the religious zealots who tell everyone else what they should/should not do with their own bodies. People are worried about their own shit, and everyone is dealing with a lot, someone else’s virginity is not something people waste mental space on unless they’re literally children in middle school/high school. It was your choice and nobody was made fun of. I had maybe one guy I dated have the "talk" about sex but he was 2 years older than me. I wouldn't say I felt pressured by him it was just a discussion that did warrant having. I wasn't opposed to it by then as I was 17, soon to be 18. We just happened to break up before we got there. I may have just been lucky but even messing around, no guy ever tried to push me to go all the way. We were heavily messing around so it would have been reasonable but I think maybe they were afraid to lol. So, that worked well for me. I certainly didn't give off the easy vibe nor did I have the reputation as such. But it really just wasn't something people were hyper focused on then. We just kind of minded our own business about that. Some people were know to be more active in that area but it was like whatever, that is their choice. Even my friends and I had varying levels of experience and it was not a subject we talked about that often or with much weight. I never heard anyone get made fun of for that.
One more addendum to these days….man/boys didn’t feel the need to get married anymore because they could slake their desires with no future costs. At that time girl/women would try to get pregnant to basically “trap” their guy into marriage. Naturally this led to a lot of divorces.

I was thinking of the adult side where they have both.
Obviously lots of things have changed for the better since the 1960’s but has the whole courtship/dating/marriage scene gotten better? I would suggest it’s worse now than ever before with online dating and fewer opportunities to meet people in person, not to mention people having fewer social skills than in previous times. Everyone is glued to their phones and not joining clubs and participating in sport in the same ways as before etc.
I was born in the 60’s so was dating in the 80’s and by golly I’m glad I was young then not now. My 30 year old daughter has never even had a proper boyfriend. Too many Tinder dates just want sex not a relationship and she’s not into that. It’s a lot harder these days to connect romantically. Monogamy has a lot going for it if you choose wisely😉
This is the 3rd documentary I'm watching on this topic; first the marriages in 1820-1900 Victorian time, then the marriages from 1900-1960 and now this 1960+ one. It seems every generation has changed things for the better but at the same time had a lot of struggles aswell. I myself grew up in the 90s/2000s and I agree with you that this situationships and online dating is very confusing. But in the Victorian time video they mentioned women were basically R* a lot and everyone was having affairs and in the 1900 video they mentioned that in the end of 1800s/beginning of 1900s women were like purity slaves to their husbands. Then I guess compared to those times the dating scene we have now at least gives women more freedom and safety. I wonder what struggles and improvements the next generation will face in their dating/marriage journey.
@@Nathan_Bookwurm the modern struggles are a lack of opportunity/places to meet initially for young people, stigmatization of approaching the opposite sex in public (nobody wants to be branded a creep and plastered online to the world), economic concerns about starting families (one of the main reasons people are in relationships, and also one of the main reasons to stay together past the initial few year honeymoon phase) as it is increasingly becoming more expensive to be starting out in life around the world in developed countries, and general lack of willingness to commit to a marriage at all even if there is a relationship (due to both legal concerns and ethical/moral degeneration of the west).

According to 2000 years of Christian tradition, both were expected to be virgins. That was the 'norm' up until at least the 1920's. Of course, men were more likely to have had sexual relations before marriage, but the percentage was low. With more women open to sex before marriage, there was clearly more opportunity. Most men found this type of women as "not the marrying kind" and the expectation of women to be virgins on their wedding day was high if she expected to marry well.
But today people are shamed for being virgins.
I don’t doubt this happens, but from my own experience in school throughout university, and the combined experience from those in my age group, the only virgins I’ve seen get shamed, and rightfully so, are the religious zealots who tell everyone else what they should/should not do with their own bodies. People are worried about their own shit, and everyone is dealing with a lot, someone else’s virginity is not something people waste mental space on unless they’re literally children in middle school/high school. This is an uncommon experience.

@@pesto6530 I agree! It was the same thing when I was in high school in the mid to late 90's. Sure, it came up but it wasn't something that everyone was concerned about. It was your choice and nobody was made fun of. I had maybe one guy I dated have the "talk" about sex but he was 2 years older than me. I wouldn't say I felt pressured by him it was just a discussion that did warrant having. I wasn't opposed to it by then as I was 17, soon to be 18. We just happened to break up before we got there. I may have just been lucky but even messing around, no guy ever tried to push me to go all the way. We were heavily messing around so it would have been reasonable but I think maybe they were afraid to lol. So, that worked well for me. I certainly didn't give off the easy vibe nor did I have the reputation as such. But it really just wasn't something people were hyper focused on then. We just kind of minded our own business about that. Some people were know to be more active in that area but it was like whatever, that is their choice. Even my friends and I had varying levels of experience and it was not a subject we talked about that often or with much weight. I never heard anyone get made fun of for that.

One more addendum to these days….man/boys didn’t feel the need to get married anymore because they could slake their desires with no future costs. At that time girl/women would try to get pregnant to basically “trap” their guy into marriage. Naturally this led to a lot of divorces.
With the pill lots of women were coherced into free sex , seen stories about key parties women telling about not being happy at all in hindsight

The irony of the 60's "Free Love" movement gave way to the 70's "Decade of Debauchery" is not lost on me. The great STD scare of the 80's drove young men to other pursuits. The advent of the InterNET of the 90's really did destroy "Recreational Sex" as a pastime for young couples.
Watch Revolutionary Road for the 60s (and The Help too), Match Point and Closer to see how this style would play out in modern day. Those were all dystopian movies made right before things changed. Oh yes and Forrest Gump and My Girl were also sort of about old school dating. Then there’s a bunch about being gay as a kid back then too. Robin Williams was in a few about the gay struggle. My Own Private Idaho, gus van sant movies.
Modern times are so much better. The competition is there but so are the choices. You’re not stuck knowing 300 people in your town.
