so many were taught from birth to behave that way, though. men really had no rules or standards they were required to adhere to regarding their wives or mistresses. some were compassionate and reasonable, and some were complete buttheads. but, they basically could do what they wanted with no judgement or consequences, and women had to tiptoe a straight line on eggshells. the church made divorce pretty much impossible, so it was really dangerous if he fell out of love or met someone else. and if he died, women couldn't own property. everything went to the male closest in kin and it was up to him what happened to her. if brother/uncle/cousin allowed her to stay in her own home, he was considered extremely charitable. if he let her live in HIS household, that was more common, so he could remind her and the kids every day that they'd be on the street without him. men were God. last word. absolute authority.

Truth. Even today if that’s what you want and are making an informed decision, not being pressured etc. A woman I know from college, got her degree, and married a doctor. She told me she wanted a degree ‘just in case’ but what she really wanted from her life was to be a wife and stay at home mother so that’s what she did and they are still very happy.

I was born in 65, my wife in 71. We met in 1990 and have been together ever since, we have 2 daughters and 6 grandchildren, 3 boys and 3 girls. We hit a bump here and there, but (we've talked about this) we wouldn't change a single thing as these past 34yrs have been absolutely amazing!
Marriage does work, but it has to be with the right person, you both have to put everything, including your soul into ital and, Communication is absolutely paramount 😊

Free sex is good until a baby is involved. Unfortunately the men seem to like the free sex part, but whether it’s access to abortion and birth control they don’t want to take the blame.

It was the same way back then. Marriages were VERY beneficial for the most men, they didn't marry because they all somehow believed in a pure internal love. To be married meant an excess to free sex and having a free domestic server.
I don't say people didn't fall in love and marry for that reason. I'm not a cynic, who doesn't believe in love and friendship, but clearly not every marriage back then was made in heaven. If you speak to older women today, you hear many horrific stories about life long emotional neglect, dead dreams and wasted lives.

They don't really make any shows like this anymore! Obviously as with most history docs on YT, they were made many years ago. But I do agree I'd love to see a show about how different it is now compared to when I started dating in the mid 90's. It was better back then! I don't know what went wrong but things have gone right the hell downhill! Obviously, the internet and dreaded online dating has had some part in it. But also many people are not being raised with the idea of marriage and kids being the norm anymore. Which is ok but it should also be discussed that marriage still has value. Everyone being alone and jumping from one crappy relationship to another is what has come out of it. Most men don't think they ever have to get married or even have a serious relationship and that is almost celebrated. Same with women but to a lesser degree. We can't screw around into our late 40's or 50's and just marry a much younger guy and have a family like men can. It sucks! These women haven't received untold number of dic pics or had men think that they can expect to have sex with you after saying a few words to you online or had one conversation in a bar. Most women do not want to be treated like hookers! If they want it that fast with no effort, then they need to contact prostitutes just like other generations did! These people even would be shocked. My mother and grandmother certainly never experienced a fraction of the shit I have. They would just have no understanding if I tried to explain it. They couldn't fathom men acting like that or having that nerve and expectation.

Fast forward to the mid seventies I couldn’t date a guy for more than a month afore me da wanted me to marry them…fortunately me mum would have none of it and encouraged me to be an independent working gal before marriage, the tug of war made me crazy. But of course my mom had problems with premarital sex too, which was just not happening. The whole time was so confusing. I think the mixed messages of the time led to many unfortunate marriages….. I do need to add that my parents were married for nearly sixty years….

My high school girlfriend wanted badly to have sex, but I painfully resisted the urge. Back then sex meant you had to get married. She would say things like, "It's probably ok since we're going to get married anyway." But, I never mentioned marriage, and I knew I didn’t want to marry her. I knew the kind of girl I wanted to marry, and it wasn't her. She was beautiful and kind but also boring and not very learned. We went up just to the edge, and we did everything but go "all the way." We both still made sure the other was quite satisfied. (We learned a lot from a couple of p*rno movies.) On my second day at college I met THE girl, and I instantly fell in love, i.e., ZERO HESITATION. God, it was glorious. I called my girlfriend and said, "Farewell." She later married a childhood friend of mine, I married my wife, and everything turned out ok.

Well, that's nice for you. I had a similar love at first sight the summer before I started college. We were together for 7 years and planned on marriage but I realized over time he was an alcoholic and he wasn't truly interested in me trying to help him with it. A binge drinker not a daily drinker. So, that crashed and burned big time eventually. I'd dated a decent number of guys before him and I was happy to not date anyone else. He hadn't dated as much because he'd had a long time high school girlfriend but he was certainly far more experienced with sex than I was so it evened out things I guess. We were both head over heals immediately and there was no question that we would start dating and soon no question that we would get married. Good thing I told him we should just wait to be officially engaged until after we graduated college. I was not getting married at 19/20 and my parents would not have been thrilled by any means. This was the late 90's so people didn't usually get married that young then though a few of my friends did.

AND there'll NEVER be an ex pop up confuse everyone's feelings. but, then, there's the off chance that you suddenly discover you're not even attracted in that way to the person you've just married 😮 i guess that's what all the kissing and cuddling is for, though.

Obviously lots of things have changed for the better since the 1960’s but has the whole courtship/dating/marriage scene gotten better? I would suggest it’s worse now than ever before with online dating and fewer opportunities to meet people in person, not to mention people having fewer social skills than in previous times. Everyone is glued to their phones and not joining clubs and participating in sport in the same ways as before etc.
I was born in the 60’s so was dating in the 80’s and by golly I’m glad I was young then not now. My 30 year old daughter has never even had a proper boyfriend. Too many Tinder dates just want sex not a relationship and she’s not into that. It’s a lot harder these days to connect romantically. Monogamy has a lot going for it if you choose wisely😉

This is the 3rd documentary I'm watching on this topic; first the marriages in 1820-1900 Victorian time, then the marriages from 1900-1960 and now this 1960+ one. It seems every generation has changed things for the better but at the same time had a lot of struggles aswell. I myself grew up in the 90s/2000s and I agree with you that this situationships and online dating is very confusing. But in the Victorian time video they mentioned women were basically R* a lot and everyone was having affairs and in the 1900 video they mentioned that in the end of 1800s/beginning of 1900s women were like purity slaves to their husbands. Then I guess compared to those times the dating scene we have now at least gives women more freedom and safety. I wonder what struggles and improvements the next generation will face in their dating/marriage journey.

    • @epicfiend1999

@@Nathan_Bookwurm the modern struggles are a lack of opportunity/places to meet initially for young people, stigmatization of approaching the opposite sex in public (nobody wants to be branded a creep and plastered online to the world), economic concerns about starting families (one of the main reasons people are in relationships, and also one of the main reasons to stay together past the initial few year honeymoon phase) as it is increasingly becoming more expensive to be starting out in life around the world in developed countries, and general lack of willingness to commit to a marriage at all even if there is a relationship (due to both legal concerns and ethical/moral degeneration of the west).

Of course, men were more likely to have had sexual relations before marriage, but the percentage was low. With more women open to sex before marriage, there was clearly more opportunity. @@pesto6530 I agree! It was the same thing when I was in high school in the mid to late 90's. Sure, it came up but it wasn't something that everyone was concerned about. It was your choice and nobody was made fun of. I had maybe one guy I dated have the "talk" about sex but he was 2 years older than me. I wouldn't say I felt pressured by him it was just a discussion that did warrant having. I wasn't opposed to it by then as I was 17, soon to be 18. We just happened to break up before we got there. I may have just been lucky but even messing around, no guy ever tried to push me to go all the way. We were heavily messing around so it would have been reasonable but I think maybe they were afraid to lol. So, that worked well for me. I certainly didn't give off the easy vibe nor did I have the reputation as such. But it really just wasn't something people were hyper focused on then. We just kind of minded our own business about that. Some people were know to be more active in that area but it was like whatever, that is their choice. Even my friends and I had varying levels of experience and it was not a subject we talked about that often or with much weight. I never heard anyone get made fun of for that.

One more addendum to these days….man/boys didn’t feel the need to get married anymore because they could slake their desires with no future costs. At that time girl/women would try to get pregnant to basically “trap” their guy into marriage. Naturally this led to a lot of divorces.

The irony of the 60's "Free Love" movement gave way to the 70's "Decade of Debauchery" is not lost on me. The great STD scare of the 80's drove young men to other pursuits. The advent of the InterNET of the 90's really did destroy "Recreational Sex" as a pastime for young couples.

Watch Revolutionary Road for the 60s (and The Help too), Match Point and Closer to see how this style would play out in modern day. Those were all dystopian movies made right before things changed. Oh yes and Forrest Gump and My Girl were also sort of about old school dating. Then there’s a bunch about being gay as a kid back then too. Robin Williams was in a few about the gay struggle. My Own Private Idaho, gus van sant movies.
Modern times are so much better. The competition is there but so are the choices. You’re not stuck knowing 300 people in your town.
