Anyone notice how the Muni Flyer 4500/4600 series sounded distinctly different inside vs outside whereas the New Flyer 8800/8900 series sounded exactly the same?
Yes. I've always noticed that. But when riding these I used to always sit next to an opened window to sort of blend the inside sound with the outside sound.
Paul C Here's another bus equipped with the Detroit Diesel 6V92TA and Allison HT747 - this time it's a 1984 Flyer D902. It's also another 15-minute clip!
At that time, I always found it hard to record sounds from Muni buses as they were often crowded and people were chatting and screaming inside the bus...Doing night recordings was not really an option for me as I were living in San Leandro, San Mateo and later San Jose.
TheCRTman You probably did hear the classic death tick. Muni drove these buses into the ground in the 18 years they ran on the streets of SF. The bodies alone looked like someone took a baseball bat to them. Even then they still coulda ran them some more. Engine wise I'm gonna go with the HT 740. The D40's had HT 747's in em and sounded subtly different then these.
Mark Del Monte I still can't figure out what causes the death tick. Yeah almost 19 years actually. I've seen pictures of other D902's in 2001 and they looked pretty beat up. Even though the HT-747 was becoming standard by 1984, I also think these had HT-740's. The D40's had HTB-748's (electronic version "ATEC.")
HKT120 It's some weird and loud click sound an engine makes and if it keeps runnig like that, it will soon break down. I think it as to do with parts hitting each other.
Christian Alvarado I'm not sure if you still live in the bay, but 4574 will most likely be making an appearance in September for Muni Heritage Weekend.
is there a chance that you could make another video of a different 4500's sieres. Theres something about that engine that sounds Like its about to explode.
D902's had a T-drive transmission setup, different rear doors and different rear windows. D901's were V-drive. Bus 4574 is an exception since it was a replacement bus built later in 1984. It was labeled as a D901, but it had the same specs as a D902 except for the rear window.
They roared on the outside. Even if it was still dark when I woke up, I knew it was morning because I could hear the 2 Clement barreling down the street.
even the new flyer D901&D902 buses can have the 6V92TA analog Detroit diesel engine with HT 740 Allison transmission just like the neoplan-an440 gillig phantom hi floor buses the mci mc12 mcimc9 crusader ii coach series 96 A3 or 102 A3 coaches and 102 C3 coaches and Prevost le mirage 40 ft coaches
I believe that was the bell sound when someone tried to open the rear door. Sometimes when the bus was turning left, the centripetal force would swing the door to the right and the bell would also make false alarm…
Do you mean myself or other passengers? For me, I usually would make a comment for myself to remind me what the agency, fleet number and route were. On some of my earlier recordings, I would also make a comment of which street intersection the bus was at…I didn’t do this on my later recordings…
Those Flyer D902s make all the right sounds. Thanks for uploading.
You're welcome.
This recording brings back so many memories when I was a kid living in SF during the 90's. If I can go back in time, I would love to.
I would love to ride this to Woolworth's on Market and Sears on Masonic...

Man that D902 sounds sick! Thank you so much for this upload!
No problem, I'm glad you like it.

Hey, between your videos and HKT120 I can practically relive my childhood! Thanks heaps to both of you guys!
@@jessealvarez779 He's my good friend now. He has even more footage and so do I now. :)
To bad they didn't keep this sound with the new buses. I love that sound.
My dad drove for muni. He drove the 71,37,23,44,29 and 54. He drove the flyers (45s) all the time. 4500 was a first bus...4585 was a slow flyer.

Remember how the engine would "whir" when the operator would turn the wheel?
That's the power steering pump.

TheCRTman Couldn't even last 5 seconds man XD
Ninja Bus Fan That's hilarious man. I wonder how people didn't have multiple busgasms back then. XD You can also hear a death tick. :/

HKT120 Yeah I agree. I have been recording the Neoplan AN440's a lot on the 38AX at 7 AM and it is usually not very noisy.
Starting 5:39 you can tell she was on Lincoln Way because she kicked it into high gear!
Sounds exactly like houstons neoplan an345
I have a similar sound here but on a Phantom

ClassicTVMan1981X Rare D902 audio. Does this sound more like an HT-747 or 740 to you? Also, I thought I heard a death tick.

I just have one Muni D902 sound and this is the one.
I may need a little help on the differences between the D901 and D902. The only one I can tell is that the D902’s moaned more

The D902's were special ordered and only served in San Francisco
@5:30!!! These buses sound real bassy inside.
This is the only sound clip I have for the D902s...Fortunately, there were no people talking in the bus ~
