Pedal power has great potential for many purposes - and not just for low-tech countries. Most of us could do with using less grid electricity as well as the benefits of exercise. One point on this though - as a dedicated hand-washer - washing is easy; the hardest bit is the rinsing and wringing. The several changes of water required might be a problem while in transit.
You can add white distilled vinegar to the rinse water for a natural fabric softener. The white vinegar also rinses away any soap that may be left in the clothes. The slight vinegar smell dissipates as the clothes dries; leaving only a fresh almost odorless scent.
I feel ashamed for replying on UA-cam to learn laundry but is this true? I have dermatitis and this would be tremendous help instead of buying the expensive hypoallergenic soaps
@@weltschmertzz I'm very late replying but yes, this is true. I usually washing my clothes with nothing more than soap, baking soda and vinegar. I add the original brown listerine or hydrogen peroxide if I have some stubborn stains (idk if you're a lady but hydrogen peroxide works wonders on blood stains).
A great invention to ease the burden faced by people in third world countries. More so, what a kind, innovative young man to have thought about such an invention. I hope it brings you wealth and happiness.
You are absolutely right about efficiency! The other problem with this is that you'll need a bicycle AND the washing drum which requires far more investment than a single pedal powered washing machine. He should chuck half the bike and connect the drum straight to the chain. That would be a viable option. Bicycle and drum can be a solution for first world people only who could use their bikes as a washing machine. Poorer won't be able to afford this.
I'd like to see one with holes in it, and a backsplash, for a "spin-cycle" to get the water out before drying the clothes. People are getting carpel tunnel from wringing the clothes, and maybe this would give them some relief!
People pay to ride an exercise bike in a fitness centre and they pay for the electricity to run a washer. Why not have one at home, wherever you are in the world? I bet you could make a second drum, with another drum inside with holes all over it, so you could dry them, as well.
Ó Slattarra I wanna make this project myself when I go to college here in the Netherlands. Finding a bike for free is easy here so then you only need the drum and the metal structure. I think it's a brilliant idea
@@SakariWolf13 If I could have the money, I'll invest in a Big Gym, and make use of the blood-power of clients (and make them wash clothes besides). All installed under the floor, nobody notices haha
I just had this idea and had to see if some one already thought of it. Low and behold it already exists and better than the one I had imagined...create a hook up for a generator and a hand crank blender and this will be SUPER awesome.
If it's a heavy load it'll probably make the whole thing unstable and you could fall. Besides if you're going uphill you probably won't be able to bike or you'll get exhausted. It's better to just do it in the static mode
I think it would be a much better design to attach a chain from the rear sprocket to the drum and not the friction drive. The friction drive is at least 20% less efficient than from powering the spinner from a second chain.
Nice one Rich getting yourself out there like a pro in no time. I look forward to hearing when you get it out there in the third world and start doing what you originally planned back in the last year at uni mate. Good luck, but i dont think you need it pal.
dang that was my idea too good to know someone post it good job bro..need to make a bigger size for comforter and with a spinner dryer too.. it would be nice if you can do that and post it again well kind uh hard for me coz i don't have those material.. and there's a way also to make a free energy it ,from dc voltage to ac voltage using inverter and a battery .
If possible, a watertight door beside drive strip on side of barrel instead of end would allow easier loading and unloading so barrel would not have to be removed from axle. Great common sense idea.
Does spinning clothes all in one direction get them clean? They just go round in circles. There is a system of soaping and pounding clothing once or twice on a big flat rock in India that seems much more efficient than spinning - no offense intended.
If you go slow enough I think it can as they will slosh around and the friction will clean them. If you glue boards or cut rubber balls in half and glue them on the inside it would be much better.
i think there's an agitator in their that rustles them up as it spins. I think the guy knows what he's doing and I think it's great. This on in this video looks like an improved version of his previous video. If he keeps improving on this it could really be a game changer for developing countries and off grid living.
Solar panels are fine and dandy for some things. They are generally speaking NOT good for powering motors. Motors use quite a bit current and thus require quite a bit of solar power. It's much more efficient to use human power. Use the solar panels where they work best, lights, radio, computers ETC. Use human power for the rest.
This machine is figured out so that it would work in a mobile service (something like Telepizza). However, I think, for *poor* people who have no electricity more needed would be just standing machine (attached to a typical bicycle they own), rather than mobile laundry (charged per piece).
About 70watts from fit average human legs trying quite hard, mechanically to a bike wheel. 80-90watts 1SqMt solar as long as the sun shines. What ever way you look at it, it depends on what you have, if you have legs and a bike then go for it, if you have mod cons with a machine that uses around 2000 watts thru wires and don't happen to have 12 men to pedal, plug it in the wall and go for it.

Needs some cappable holes in the barrel so you can unscrew the caps and use as a spin drier. For super spin speed, ride down a really big hill if there's a redesign so you can ride and wash at the same time!
Well back in the days this was fun due to energy crises when prices have sky rocketed people will want this pedal powered washing machine to save bills.
I would absolutely take it. I'd do everyone in my families laundry all day every day for a small fee. It would be incredibly more reliable than the hunk of junk they sell you at the box stores.
I have done this project in my college for my 6th semester and they rejected this project by saying me this is not a modern day project and drum didn't have a specific design for the washing of clothes typical indian teachers 🤦♂️
Great idea but such a young smart chap should realise that that tub is spinning FAR TOO FAST and the clothes would most likely be stuck tothe walls by the centrifuge force. A washing machine spins much more slowly so that items the load tumble over each other froom the high point of the tub so there is far more stirring and rubbing against each other and more washingStill, a great start and of the "rider" "rides less quickly", it may work much better. and leave the faster riding for the actual spin cycle in a slightly different tub, with holes in it and a shield for the rider and for whoever else is about, meant for extracting the water Still, great idea and good luck to the young inventor
