It's not everyone's style. But if they did the grounds and mechanicals sound then they did a good thing. With places that far gone it's first and foremost about saving it from the bulldozer. It may take another owner to fully right the ship.
Wow, the current owner has really destroyed the (inside) character of the house. The decor is so not in keeping with the casual elegance the house has known before. Quite awful really 😢
I used to critique everyone's rehabs and remodels. I still rent a 1 br. I dont think they listen to me. LOL. I feel like I started a trend by having lawncare and painting included in my monthly rent payment. Nothing wrecks days off like annoying chores.
Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee did the first renovation. They understood original the WASP old money vibe of East Hampton's old houses. The latest renovation is new money and it looks it.
It's sad that she actually came from old opulent money and this is a crime! Please check Homworthy from 1 day ago, there is full hour of this horid reno.
Absolutely criminal....let's hope one day someone will take it back to it's homey Hampton's vintage charm. Only the very rich could afford Grey Gardens and look how tacky they made it. Ripped out the true heart in the home and made it hideously modern. Poor Grey Gardens. I am so mad it was sold to this woman!
@survivor - Me Too!!!! Drew Barrymore is such a WONDERFUL ACTRESS, as well as Jessica Lang. And Drew has a LOT OF ACTORS IN HER FAMILY, so the "FRUIT DOESN'T FALL FAR FROM THAT TREE"!!!!
I actually prefer the 2nd owner that previously purchased the property from little eddie she restored the home and the original furnishings that her and her husband had found up in the attic I loved the way she furnished the home it more cosy not forced like the 3rd time
Oh goodness, do not like the last renovation at all. Uggh, not being mean but the renovation after Edie sold it was beautiful and had that old world charm. I don't know what kind of style the last was but not a fan. It should have been left as close to the original as possible. Why do people have to go crazy with bright colors and patterns that hurt the eyes? White and cream are so classic and beautiful, but I don't own it so sadly I don't get to decide. 😞
I agree. From what I read, they could have bought a move-in ready home or demolish and build a new home for the cost to renovate the home. However, I’m glad that Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee preserved it.
@@cheribee968 Couldn't agree more. It was said that her sons helped in buying food for them, and where they could. But we need to remember, her boys had families of their own to support. They tried to get Edie and little Edie to move to Florida where they were, but you COULDN'T BLAST Edie away from that place!!!!
@@cheribee968 She really was!!!! Don't get me wrong, as I get older, it does give me "PAUSE" to wonder what will happen if my husband goes before me?! But I could NEVER ASK MY DAUGHTER, NOR EXPECT HER TO TAKE CARE OF ME!!!!
I am very intrigued by Grey Gardens. I have watched the documentary at least three times. If I had the opportunity to visit one place in America, I would love to visit this home. I am from Alabama, and we have beautiful homes like Grey Gardens, but I do not think they are as intriguing as Grey Gardens.
The latest reconstruction was done without any appreciation for the time period. It's just sad. The couple who bought it after Big Edie died did a lovely job. Now it just looks like any modern home anywhere. Congratulations for removing the character of the house.
Jessica Lange is a phenomenol talent. Her American Horror Story roles showcased just how versatile an actor she is. But I get it. Taylor Swift completely creeps me out. Just in the way she carries a purse makes me shudder.
Perhaps the third restoration will be closer to what it was meant to be. The second one was a horror of "contemporary" No matter how she thought she was keeping true to the original.
LOVE the Colors and the Garden!!!! Personally, I would have added some Yellow and Orange Flowers as well. NOT CRAZY about ALL the Clutter that surrounds the BEAUTIFUL STAIRCASE!!!! And I've NEVER been CRAZY ABOUT WOOD LIKE THAT ON THE EXTERIOR OF A HOME. It looks kindof FUNKY. But, to each their own!!!!
After reading you all's comments, l feared much worse design choices. Yes the colors are bold & overly decored, gaudy & campy (blue leopard wall paper) but the bones are there & its just another creative design era. Grey Gardens is loved, like an old gramma wearing too much makeup (turquoise eye shadow 😱). The garden needed a good manicure & polish. Long live Grey Gardens! & the memory of the eccentric, unique, talented women who made her famous. True Beauty Never Fades, but does require maintainence. 😏
Was a little worried reading the comments, could the newest owner have ruined it? No... Little Eddie would have loved it, colorful and over the top just like her💛
Don't like the new owners style aswell, but she kept everything original as far as woodworks, moulding and such goes, you can paint it over and remove the wallpaper and it would be still the same old Grey Gardens, it was completely renovated, even the porch was restored with it's original rounded details, it's now assured to stay here for another 100 to 200 years thanks to Liz's restoration
Absolutely beautiful they couldn't have done a better job it looks gorgeous kudos to this couple they put a lot into it and restored it and it looks beautiful absolutely beautiful thank you for sharing ❤️🌹
Big Edie died a year after the documentary was made and Lil Edie loved another 25yrs after her mom passed, traveling and living in various places such as Canada, Florida
Wow, looks like the house from the seamstress movie with Kate Winslet, her characters mom lived in the same condition so I believe it was inspired by them
She decorated herself. It's horrid. You can go to Homeworthy to see on your eyes how it actually looks like. Those pictures here look so much better than the true interior.
Gorgeous, airy , and bright now. I luv It! I'm sure, the wealthy neighbors, around this property appreciate the changes, also. What an improvement. It looks like a magazine cover. Best of luck, to the current occupant , of this restored home.
I saw the Grey gardens documentary. It would have been nice for maids and nurse care for Ms. Beale to have been paid for by her neice, so that her Aunt was properly cared for. The daughter may have gotten back the will to be out in the world if not made to live in horrible conditions. Depression and despair sets in when you don't have the means to keep things fixed and not falling apart. Both ladies sanity and dignity may have been spared and renewed.
The last “reno” is just tacky and has ruined the classic beauty of the house. Hopefully some day someone else will restore the house back to what it should be.
Jackie was living in Greece at the time, still dealing with the deaths of JFK and Robert. She feared for John Jr.'s life (after Robert's murder she said "If they're killing Kennedys I have to get John-John out of here". That's one reason she married Onassis- he owned a private island and had the resources to provide the kids with incredible security.) and was dealing with mental health issues of her own. Lee did not get on with Little Edie, so probably didn't care. Lee had a house out there and partied with Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger, but didn't have anything to do with her own family members. Lee brought the Maysles brothers out to do a documentary about her life, which they found boring, but they stumbled across Grey Gardens and made the documentary about the Edies.
An authentic reproduction of the original house is the only acceptable update on Grey Gardens. As it was intended to be. If only the Edies could have seen it restoresd to its glory. This is all just so sad. The lastest update is horrendous.
Everyone has a right to their own opinion. However, I think the bright colors really make the house look nice. I couldn't be depressed in the house with bright colors and warm personality. 👍
After reading all the comments, I was really worried what it might look like now. I needn’t have worried…it’s gorgeous! It’s obvious that Liz Lang loves Grey Gardens as much as Big Edie and Sally Quinn did and is willing to invest her money in the care and maintenance of this magnificent summer home.
Too many colors that hurt the eyes … over saturated. I thought these homes were for getting away from the loud hustle and bustle of the city to relax in serenity.

This last renovation screams obsequious obscenity, the concept of “ understatement” is lost on these people. The original house was beautiful, this is cringe worthy.
You have got to be joking. It has ZERO charm. The interior looks embarrassingly TACKY! Why would a designer invoke such an eye sore aesthetic to a home that should be timeless Hampton style, beachy, and incorporating soothing pastels, creams and local accents? Why in the world anybody would destroy the personality of this home into such a garish design trend is beyond me.
Credo che l'ultimo restauro sia follemente camp e per me sarebbe la casa perfetta. Dubito però che rispetti lo stile originario della casa, manco per la fava...
Little Edie didn't want to sell the home to anyone who was going to demolish it, so she stayed there, traveling to Manhattan for work and even starring in her own cabaret show before moving to California, then Canada, and finally to Bal Harbor, Florida, where she passed away at 84 in 2002.
I think the last reno is horrid. The reno before was more in keeping with the Hampton feel. Slightly overgrown and beachy.
Exactly. 😢

They did a great job in the movie.

Well. I like. Brought life and surfside whimsy back to the old place. The kitchen is so, so beautiful and the sea as the view?! Sublime.
That "restoration" is as tacky as the maternity wear she designs. Money can't buy taste!

Unhappy with the last renovation.......but the outdoors and gardens are beautiful.
The last Reno is a “hot mess
Omg, that last renovation…….they ruined the interior!! The blue shutters and the walled garden look nice though.

One question: where did Little Edie go, once Big Edie died and the house was sold?
She got money for her documentary and moved
to New York.
SCCL1000, after New York, she moved to California, then Canada, and finally to Bal Harbour, Florida where she passed away at 84 in 2002.
@@lynnharrell9598 Yeah, that's where her brothers were. They ended up taking care of her towards the end, I believe.

I think Little Eddie would love the newest restoration!! She loved the newest style and tastes, now the house looks classy!!
The interiors are awful in the 2017 remodel. They should of left it like it was.
