What an alien experience it must have been to face the Roman Legions after being militarily isolated for so long. The Britons fought admirably well considering the circumstances.
Eh they probably fought gauls, went abroad as mercs, repelled Germanic raiders, and the warfare of the time was near universal - bands of youngins, lines of spears, or sword/ax men with shields and javelins. Britain's warfare just kept chariots around for longer compared to the continent.
@@thebrocialist8300 one of the newest incomers were the catuvelauni tribe, only around 50 yrs earlier they crossed to middle Britain , just north of the Thames. Caesar claims to have defeated them destroyed their stronghold and took slaves tribute as well as making promises mot to attack the other tribes. None of that happened . Caesar landed in South East England ( Kent) he never crossed the Thames or defeated the catuvellauni. Within a few years the catuvelauni had extended their territory and took trinovante land making them bend the knee to the catuvelauni Chieftains. Meaning that Caesar was chatting rubbish. No archaeology exists from that time outside of Kent. Nothing is found north of Thames in catuvelauni territory.

Excellent video , Great job ! I think Caesar actually wanted to cede Britain to Rome , but seeing that there was not much of worth in the island , and also it will be difficult to administrate , being so far away he just gave up and used his campaigns as propaganda back in Rome

Honestly the native Britons put up a better fight than I thought would have. I heard they were just primitive tribes with "druids" and shit. The whole invasion is kinda weird though, its like hes invading so far from his homeland for no reason other than clout. I believe that nowadays we would refer to this strategy as reconnaissance in force. The intent to to scope the land and determine your enemies strength, weapons and tactics.
Much is made of the Japanese kamikaze, but it only worked twice, both times against the Mongols. The English kamikaze worked three times, twice vs Caesar and once against the Spanish Armada.

Japan is still inhabited by the Japanese, Britain has been invaded successfully by the Germans multiple times. I mean - the Celts are still there but the English kinda took a lot of their land and as a consequence everybody and his mother had to deal with English invasions that they would not have dared to launch if they were still on the continent, unprotected by the channel ... I wish the British kamikaze would have repelled the Danish, the Norwegians, the Angles, the Saxons and the Normans (did I forget somebody?) but sadly it didn't. Great video! Honestly what I want to know is, how did the Romans and the local tribes communicate when making an allyship and exchanging information? Did they just play a massive game of charades giving Caesar intel? Man, I'd love to have seen it.
Hehe, yeah the crossing was probably more dramatic and slow, but it was sped up for the sake of presentation. Plus the Romans supposedly chose a fordable area, in an area that the water wasn't so deep at that point in time. There is a dramatic story presented by Plutarch during the crossing about a legionary who lost his shield in the current while he was trying to save some of his comrades, but i left it out also in order to keep the presentation simpler and shorter.
Were the Britons not able to defend from the hills with their notorious longbows? Reality aside, in Age of Empires II, my main strategy when playing as Britons is to create fortified camps and use the extensive range of the British longbow to prevent any enemy infantry, cavalry and even archers (as they have far inferior range to the British longbow) from approaching the walls
Also romans were master in sieges, don't forget their artillery Pieces, consistently outranging and outpowering the opponents, even if they had the longbows, they wouldn't have had a chance
"Britain II: Britain Harder" was in many ways like the second part of a trilogy ("The Godfather", "Star Wars", "The Terminator", "The Dark Knight"). The first title got good enough criticism and public acclaim to let the producers give the director free reins and go balls to the wall and implement what they couldn't in the first one. As for the Gaulish insurrection, I've read plenty of Asterix comics to know who those dastardly Gauls were and how they defied Caesar. He was right in fearing another uprising from those volatile Gauls.

They were previously in Germania and Britannia where blending with the locals meant getting arsefaced drunk and participate in a football riot and publicly urinating on the horses of guards shouting "Fuck the police!"

I always take negative criticism on board and try to see if there's anything that can be done to improve. It's sometimes hard to implement change straight away but over time I really try use feedback from viewers to improve my videos. Still some things to fine tune, but it's going ok. Thank you :)

thanks, years ago, I did not know that the Romans colonized Britain, and after I knew I said they must have left their traces there I am obsessed with ancient Roman ruins, and when I visit it I feel myself as if I live in that period
It is funny to see that Caesar decides not to use particular strategies against people of Britain. He simply advances with his legions. Even to capture their capital. The British were decidedly inferior to the Roman legions, even fighting at home.

Glad you finally mentioned the Britts tactics but things didnt go this well it was the worst camaign of julius and he was defeated and forced to retreat and like most defeated leaders he got assassinated
Well thats an interesting observation that i also was contemplating upon. This multiple units format is still being developed mind you, iam still trying to come up with ways to keep them but make them more conspicuous, those methods being, reducing the number of troops so as to make them larger, increasing the size of the shield, or even simplifying the design if that means that it will make it more visible, but the bottom line is that iam certainly considering what you said and iam still trying to improve upon the format in order to make it the best possible.
@@bohdan4945 I plan to move to 3d at some point, so this is a great recommendation. Of course i will need to acquire the necessary expertise which i currently lack, but i do try to experiment with 3d-ish elements here and there and iam planning to expand upon them in the next video. But unfortunately units are much more complicated models which will require a proper 3D program to make or render, so i try to make them as visible as possible in their current 2d format.

By that point, the Isles had undergone several major migration settlements/conquests
They weren't militarily isolated. They'd fought in Gaul against the Romans, and for centuries they'd made expeditions in Gaul and Belgium.

Please, these were celtic Britons, ancestors of the Welsh & Cornish. The English came later in the post-Roman invasions

i cant find the story of the defeated roman legion that was decimated by the scotts.there seems to be no mention of it on your channel

It is funny to see that Caesar decides not to use particular strategies against people of Britain. He simply advances with his legions. Even to capture their capital.

Well yeah, farmers v soldiers. Plus the celts fought as warriors, i.e. 1-v-1, whereas Romans were trained to protect those next to them.
Glad you finally mentioned the Britts tactics but things didnt go this well it was the worst camaign of julius and he was defeated and forced to retreat and like most defeated leaders he got assassinated

I personally prefer the old style of depiction of troops / units - looks much more enjoyable & easy to see them fight
Well thats an interesting observation that i also was contemplating upon.
This multiple units format is still being developed mind you, iam still trying to come up with ways to keep them but make them more conspicuous, those methods being, reducing the number of troops so as to make them larger, increasing the size of the shield, or even simplifying the design if that means that it will make it more visible, but the bottom line is that iam certainly considering what you said and iam still trying to improve upon the format in order to make it the best possible.
@@hocestbellumchannel Consider how units look in Civilization 5 - much bigger, and they look quite pleasing as you can actually see individual units
@@bohdan4945 I plan to move to 3d at some point, so this is a great recommendation. Of course i will need to acquire the necessary expertise which i currently lack, but i do try to experiment with 3d-ish elements here and there and iam planning to expand upon them in the next video.
But unfortunately units are much more complicated models which will require a proper 3D program to make or render, so i try to make them as visible as possible in their current 2d format.
