Best toilets are in the high-end department stores in areas like Ginza, Tokyo. Especially for women, as they have posh areas to freshen make-up as well as toilets you don't have to touch anything (lid rises, the birds chirp to hide your indiscrete noises, the lid lowers on rising, the unit flushes automatically, and the whole stall is sanitized in blue light. Amazing. High-end hotels often have beautiful, Zen-like rooms in dark marble and so on. You don't have to stay in the hotel to use the facilities. Simply wander in and out.

I am in Dallas and was lucky enough to see the full eclipse....I think it was super cool as there will not be another one in this area for 100 years! The birds were so funny you could see them scurrying to sleep and then when it moved again a few minutes later and started to get light again, they looked around like 'what the hell is going on?". The good thing about pocket wifi is it prolongs your phone's battery life significantly by using wifi instead of cellular data. And you can keep it charged with a power bank while hidden away instead of tethering your phone to the power bank when its low on battery.

I own a Chaser (an other large-ish Toyota 4door from Japan) The traction control thing is common what happens is that the capacitors used in the electronics don't last forever and after a few decades leak. Getting them fixed isn't impossible but it does require an electronics specialist. OR... if the warning lights are common between all toyotas from this era it could be an ABS sensor etc.

I still do pocket wifi when I visit Japan, because it can also give you high speed data for your laptop back in the hotel if the hotel's wifi is crap. Which it often is. If that weren't a concern, I would definitely go for the e-SIM.

    • @BringerOfD

Can you not hotspot off of your phone with your e-sim provider? Thats what I did in europe.

    • @raven-a
      @raven-a 5 місяців тому

@@BringerOfD You totally can but I think the main appeal of eSims are the cheaper prices for limited plans. I think unlimited ones go for just as expensive as pocket WiFi if not more, plus hotspotting does cost a lot of battery juice. My girlfriend was sharing her internet with me on Japan and her iPhone battery would be empty pretty much everyday by 3 or 4 PM, leaving both of us with no internet (next time I'll just buy a 1 or 2 GB sim for myself)

Very useful for calling ahead if your accommodation offers pick up. Also fun to answer a call with 'mushi mushi'. The actual sim is expensive , about 8 000 y for 30 days but was worth it. Insane that you have to charge the car to give it back. I rent electric cars quite often here in Malaysia, and the whole benefit is that you don't have to fill up with petrol before you give it back, because obviously you just plug it in and it's charged by the next day when someone else wants it. Who's renting a car in the evening? But yeah, I always go petrol if I'm travelling more than 200km. It's just not worth the hassle.

I used pocket wifi the first time I went to Japan in 2018. It was ok, but as mentioned it was kinda slow, and annoying to have another device to charge and carry around. However, I went again last year, and I found out that my carrier, AT&T, is fully compatible with Japanese cell networks. I didn't have to do anything and my phone just worked over there, although it costs $10 per day. A bit pricey compared to pocket wifi, but much more convenient, and it worked great from Tokyo all the way to Yakushima!

When I was in Japan in February we went to a kura in Tokyo and the only things at the table were the utensils and the matcha. So I wouldn’t say you’re gonna miss much.

I've just come back from a holiday in New Zealand and I was surprised at how popular sushi is there, I feel like I saw more sushi restaurants than in Japan. Although the presentation was different: they had self-service cabinets for the small pieces (help yourself using tongs)then counters to order cooked dishes from the menu, so the overall feeling was a bit more fast food.

We have a sushi restaurant with one of those robot servants instead of a conveyor belt and its much nicer, we order small portions via an iPad and then the food is brought by either the robot or a staff member. I thought it'd be about quality, but the actual topic was just a bot of a change in the way the sushi goes around. as someone who never picks anything from those plates that just go around, and only eats the stuff that was ordered, I think that's a good change.
However, concerning the quality: Last autumn I when I was finally able to visit Japan again after way too long because of Covid etc., I went to the Kura-Sushi in Asakusa. They had big signs with the Downtown duo on it and everything, and it seemed to be some sort of new flagship store or something. Inside it looked new and nicely decorated so I had my hopes up, but the sushi... I'm not sure if it was just this restaurant, or if it's the same in all Kura-Sushi places (not sure if I visited them much before), but the quality was bad. The rice wasn't good, and it didn't even taste much like Sumeshi. The Neta also was mostly fairly small and taste-wise it also wasn't that great. Usually I easily get more than 10 plates, usually around 15 I'd say, but that time I didn't even get 10 because it just wasn't very good.
Surely, the 100 Yen Kaiten-Zushi isn't the highest quality sushi there is, but I rememebr it being much better at Hama-Zushi, Genki, etc.
Also, funnily enough, the Sushi I ate a few months later in a Sushiro in Hong Kong was also miles better than the Kura-Sushi in Japan...
Back then I used a pocket WiFi, but last time I just used a SIM. I didn't feel much of a difference in qualtity, but since the pocket WiFi also needs to be charged, I'd say a SIM is probably a bit easier to use :)
18:30 It could be a bit more difficult if the connectiong flight is in Haneda and you arrive in Narita, btu still, with the signs everywhere it should be fine..!
I hope we'll see Pete's car soon. That was quite the long journey! :)

You do realize having a pride week doesn’t mean homosexuality is at all normalized or recognized in a country? Many places in America, where gay marriage is legal on a federal level, still will discriminate against you for being so. They even directly mention in the video Tokyo and Sapporo as being the better cities for gay people in Japan. Like what is this comment? Black History Month hasn’t somehow magically erased racism. The LGBTQ movement hasn’t somehow eliminated gender based sexual orientation. Pride week doesn’t somehow mean LGBTQ+ people aren’t discriminated against.

Honestly such an absurd comment to even post. Having a pride week in Tokyo means somehow gay people aren’t discriminated against in Japan? Yea, ok buddy. Whatever you say.

Electric cars probably aren't quite there yet, there was an electric car recently in the UK that had its brakes jam on and had to be stopped by police. I'll stick with useless petrol guzzllers for now...😁

Brakes weren't stuck. Driver had points, saw they were caught on camera, was facing a ban and tried to claim the car was at fault.

A lot of the electric car propaganda is now starting to be debunked. Firstly to make an electric car produces 3 times as many carbon emissions as a petrol car, because of the weight of the batteries they require a lot more energy to move, tyres wear out 2-3 times quicker needing to be replaced, as well as using rare earth minerals mined in places like Congo, thus encouraging child and slave labour and armed conflict. All for a car that will be more than likely recharged using electricity coming from a coal fed power station! Also in a few years there is going to be a huge problem disposing of the spent batteries!

US/Canada had stupid kids opening tubs of ice cream, licking them and putting it back years ago...most of the ice cream have a plastic seal tab or plastic steals around the top so at least you're probably in the good if the seals aren't broken.

Ask someone today how they feel about the social uproar created in the mid 1800s when a female apeared in public wearing *gasp!* trousers, and almost none of them would be able to understand any of it. Let those same people see a burly male with a five o:clock shadow in a nice dress and heels and, assuming they are honest, they will admit to being momentarily shocked at the very least. It takes time for societies to accept change. Those brave souls willing to risk societal wrath to help those changes happen deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. By the same token, those who find it extra difficult to adjust, so long as they remain reasonably civil, deserve our patience and understanding.

Kaiten sushi places were already shooting themselves in the foot before the pandemic. In one establishment, I had complained about the uncleanliness of the bubbles they put the sushi in, and was very shocked by the response of "*shrug* Oh, well. We don't have time to wash them." So, I was unsurprised by the viral videos. It's a shame because they used to be better.
