I think the tape kept them from going deeper. I’d be willing to bet the cross bow bolt would have gone deeper or even poked through the other side if it wasn’t for that tape in the middle.
Yep. The location of the sabot's were to blame. If he put them further back on the toothbrushes or used closed cell foam in 2 pieces (so they just fall away after exiting the barrel) the projectile would have penetrated further.

Definitely agree with the other comments on putting something behind the projectile rather than duct tape around it. I'm betting the bolt wouldn't stop until it got to the fletchings. This video was amazing content all the way through.

To answer the question: The "weight" of the projectile cancels out. It resists acceleration at the beginning, and also at the end. The energy applied by the canon is roughly the same for all. In other words, the lighter projectile probably goes faster. The profile of the object does matter; the bolt would have gone deeper without the tape. We would see an interesting compression happen in slow motion. This might be an interesting experiment to collaborate with another channel that has access to a high speed camera. Perhaps Tauflaudermaus or Smarter Every Day.
November 2019: TylerTube makes the world's most deadliest next generation toothbrush cannon but really you should find some objects that are the right size so you don't have to use duct tape.
That crossbow is the reason I found your channel. I bought one at a large convention for twenty dollars when I was younger. And I wanted to see a review on it. So I looked at the brand name and the model number, typed it in to UA-cam and you popped up. Glad I did. Keep up the good content man
Centering the weight slightly forward usually helps most projectiles. Like a badminton birdie the weight is in the nose, and it has a lightweight tail to create drag and help it stabilize in flight.
I have an idea and it may just fit perfectly in the tube. The paint brush sponge. You could get a set at harbor fraight for like 1 dollar or something. The smallest may fit without duck tape.
Trying to compare ballistics and wound channels is pretty tough when the exact weights are unknown, and the propellant charge is almost impossible to keep consistent. Also each projectile is made of different materials in different shapes. This will change how they absorb the initial g-forces of the launch, how they will behave in flight, and how that projectile behaves on impact (terminal ballistics). Gel blocks also have a tendency to bounce a projectile a little way back into the wound cavity, so the results from the Sharpie weren't surprising. Overall, there are too many unaccounted variables to draw solid conclusions from, but it was really fun to watch 👍
This is exactly why I watch your Channel who else is going to come up with this and I love bat PVC pressure chamber hey it don't say not for pressure anymore I love it
I worked at home depot for 3 years. We called plumbing and electrical the black hole because when a customer comes in and asks a question you get sucked in when you try to help them even though you know nothing about plumbing or electrical. For some reason they dont schedule anyone in those departments after 5pm. In my case i would end up covering lumber, hardware, plumbing and millworks from 5-10pm. Most of the time you’re gonna get a cashier or someone from freight because they were passing by. It’s like this at most home depots from what ive read on the home depot sub reddit.
If you look at the gel you’d see those items you shot with the cannon actually penetrated more than what you measured when you pulled them out. If you think about the properties of ballistic gel, you know that it flexes a good bit. So when you shot the items they went up to where you put the tape and due to it having more surface area they stopped there. However with that force the cannon was creating it also kept pushing and flexing the gel so much that it looks like it got more penetration before bouncing back to its normal resting place. Take a close look at the gel in this vid and you can see more damage beyond where it stopped on every item shot except the crossbow.
You can shoot carbon arrows for a compound bow out of that. Just wrap the end near the nock in tape and spin the arrow as you push it into the barrel to get the fletching to curl up and fit in the barrel. I used to do that all the time. It's insanely powerful
The duct tape is stopping them. It blocks them from going in deeper and kinda bounces them back afterwards. You saw the marks from the crossbow arrows, they both got stuck at roughly the same spot but the one you shot from the cannon had more penetration into the gel which inclines it tried to go deeper but the duct tape stopped it and the force pulled it back. Edit : You can even see it getting pulled back.

Yep. The location of the sabot's were to blame. If he put them further back on the toothbrushes or used closed cell foam in 2 pieces (so they just fall away after exiting the barrel) the projectile would have penetrated further.
The tape was our down fall also. So we made bushings out of foam that were in two pieces so when they leave the barrel they break away.
