After this official whatsapp error, I put the sim in a new phone & was able to install WhatsApp on the new phone, but cannot restore my chats. The chats were encrypted & backed up. I have the password saved with me... but its not being accepted. Can you pls advise what to do?

Try everything with the old phone, if it works great but if it doesn't then you only chance would be to use a new phone. Btw The old phone could still use whatsApp with a different number. Hope this helps :)

That was a huge step for me so i didn't try that. Kindly let me know if that solves the problem. ( Make sure you backup anything important before you reset your device)
I did that but nothing worked.. My number will only work in a different phone but not in the phone I was using GB whatsapp with but if I register another number in my phone it is working.. This thing will make us go mad, imagine I must go buy a new phone so I can have my WhatsApp.

It's kinda true. I use Oppo r9sk. A China product phone. I was banned but I contacted them and it was later unbanned. After 2 days I was banned again for no reason. I realized China and WhatsApp has an issues since I'm using China made phone. I think my phone is ratherly blocked not my number.
