  • A slight digression in our ongoing Dragon Quest Monsters series, Dragon Quest Treasures was a title marred by disrupted expectations. While it may not have been the new Monsters game we were looking for in the West, we should be careful not to write it off too soon. Despite the change of plans for this entry, there's still a lot of the Dragon Quest Monsters identity built-in. I think Dragon Quest Treasures Deserves Another Chance. Let's explore the many ways this is secretly the Dragon Quest Monsters that never was.

Apparently it's good to leave a comment on your own video asking people to like and subscribe, so let's assume I just did that. Thanks for all your support! Stay tuned for a pseudo channel update video going up on December 11th! Take care of yourselves, take care of each other, and I'll see you then.

Your description of Treasures honestly reminds me of Pikmin, especially Pikmin 2.
And that's not a bad thing.

I really was happy when they first showed Erik and Mia in kid form. Like Terry and Milly or Coby and Tara. I know it's not a full monsters game, but it still was a fun idea. The Monster Riding in Joker 3 was executed so well. I wish they would make a Monsters game with a riding mechanic, plenty of monsters, turn based battling and random generated worlds like DWM2 with the key system. Monsters is still number 1 for monster catching games in my opinion. Awesome video by the way.

Another amazing video! I sincerely liked Treasures for what it had to offer, the gameplay and exploration were really enjoyable, as much as the new treasure hunting gimmick, which I hope will in the end form a new spin-off franchise.
On the other hand, my one big issue I have with the game, is that the protagonists are Erik and Mia of all people.
One would argue that DQM, DQM: Caravan Heart and Shounen Yangus function the same way: younger characters transposed in a different world and doing shenanigans, prior to the game that introduced each of them, and you’d be correct, on the surface at least.
    - Terry and Milly’s background in DQVI has them being absolutely miserable at some point, and Terry’s quest to get stronger/find the strongest weapons is what drives him. However, DQM doesn’t contradict this at all. Terry doesn’t fight in DQM, he uses monsters to fight for him. As such, him going from DQM to VI actually makes his journey even harder: he was the best monster wrangler in a paradise world, and as soon as he got back, he reverted to being a simple kid with no particular skill, who could do nothing to protect his sister.
    - Kiefer’s motivations in DQVII are… vague when we first play the game. Estard Island, in the beginning of the game, is the only place on the whole world, but he seems absolutely certain that there is more, somewhere. He’s so damn sure, he almost sounds fanatical about it. But when we take Caravan Heart into account, his motivations suddenly become clearer: he’s sure there is more because he’s been to another world (though he himself didn’t know that). Kiefer went to a world where he was not a prince, roamed there with friends, wandering friends, like nomad people. No wonder that, when he got back, he was dead sure the world was bigger, but also that he wanted a life different that the one his father had for him, as he had experienced freedom for a while, freedom of title and movement, something he only got once more when he stayed with the wandering Peregrines tribe.
    - Yangus’ past as a thief is well-known as it’s discussed in the very first hours of DQVIII. We also learn that he and Red used to do thief activities together for a while, and nothing in VIII indicates that they never had not to fight. Shounen Yangus is one adventure they had, that only cements those facts: Yangus and Red were thieves, as early as when they were kids, and have known how to fight for quite some long.
However, Erik and Mia in DQXI… were slaves. Viking slaves. They had a tough and rough childhood, and this traumatic experience is what pushed both of them in the places we see them in DQXI. The point being, they were slaves, and powerless, very much like Terry and Milly in a way.
But Treasures has them both, whichever the player chose to play as/with, fighting colossal beasts, entire gangs, and a legendary pirate as well, with no indication that they’ll one day lose that knowledge on how to beat grown ups (which they do a lot in Treasures). So how could they, when they got back to their world after their adventure in Draconia was over, not break free from the vikings? How could two kids able to beat insanely huge monsters not be able to overpower simple viking humans?
Their feats in Treasures are incompatible with their backstories in DQXI to me, which is the main issue I have with the game. Some will say "but it's not canon" or smt like that, and honestly, I hear ya. Maybe I'm just a bit too... invested?
And I get that using characters from the latest mainline game entry (XI) was a good idea, as they did the same with the previous aforementioned games.
It's just a damn shame that this one, had to contradict those two characters' backstory so much.
Should Treasures become a new spinoff series tho, I would be absolutely thrilled to see the return of Tipper, Torneko's son, Yangus & Ruby, or some brand new characters!

At first I was disappointed that it wasnt a DQ game but then I ended up 100%-ing all the quests, it's just fun.
It's casual enough for less hardcore players but I had a lot of fun collecting the treasures and then guessing what super nostalgic item I got based on the silhouette.
As a western fan, I was blown away seeing treasures from DQMJ3 in an official western release.

If you like games that feel like constant sidequests i HIGHLY recommend the Legend of Mana remaster on modern consoles
That entire game is basically constant side quests in order to see new areas to then unlock even more areas. I love that game def underrated.

Huh, I guess maybe I need to actually give this one a shot. I'm diving into DQ III HD-2D now, but I can toss this one on the wish list and see if it hits a sale over Christmas. Amazing work as always sir, always a pleasure to see a GC upload.

I genuinely would love to see some more offbeat spinoffs like this in the franchise (cause, aside from Builders, it feels like there hasn't been many lately)

Its such a crime Joker 3 will never get an official english release. That game, IMO, is still the best monsters game. The dark prince was good, but Joker 3 is peak.

Top tier game, even if the PR for it wasn't great, or if it wasn't what we expected

Might have to double dip and pick up treasures for the steam deck.
I was relatively new to the DQ franchise as time of the switch release and it was a good enough time for me. However now being a proper DQ fan, maybe all the nods to the older games might hit different.

Probably in the minority but I really liked the gameplay loop, didn't care AT ALL that it wasn't "traditional DQM," but was completely turned off by the cheap graphics and poor performance on Switch. I'll revisit this if they deliver a performance patch, but otherwise it's not worth my time tbh.
