Truly beautiful My daughter has just started learning this piece. Of all the recordings I've heard this is my favourite.

I've always loved Carol Wincenc's unique sound -- not just the vibrato but the color. It makes me think of Callas. But not everyone agrees, and that's fine. The beauty of sound quality and use of vibrato is that much of it is entirely subjective; as long as it's in tune, there is no "wrong."

It must be great to be at the level of a professional competition professor of flute to be able to criticise this playing!!

@Jenifer Swanson: Her vibrato certainly isn't nanny-goatish. A nanny goat vibrato sticks out like a sore thumb in a persons playing, and tends to make their entire tone unstable. Her tone is pure beauty, with a richness, warmth you just can't find in many other places. She is professor of flute at Juilliard and one of the greatest flutist America has been given the honor of providing to the world of music. Plus, this is an old recording, perhaps some of her modern playing is much better than this.

Her flute sound is so warm, not sure I've heard anything like it EVER!!!

amazing use of tone color and intensity for vibrato...dynamics are extreme for a reason, loud is loud and soft is soft...if you're gonna judge someone for playing loud at least recognize she can play at both ends of the spectrum and with an amazing tone.

Her reading sounds very French, which is in keeping with both the composition's milieu and style for the period. I also like the phrasing which makes good musical sense.

@jean-charles Dautin: "pardonnez-moi, s'il vous plait" but you're missing the point here... Or maybe, you're the MAN!!! The best flute player, or what? Or the one who knows Enescu as nobody here does? Are you? Or, are you not? I think you don't...

Some passages are signed cleary to be stressed (appuye) and this is not emphasized in this recording. the softness of blowing rules over the composition with no changes of dynamics or nuances

Her vibrato is so vibrant and full. I don't know if it's perfect or way overdone...

@Chris Pettersen: I thought you are the MAN (the greatest flautist in the world). But - surprise; I've found you're playing "Jeux Sonatine" by Ibert (second-hand, OK, second degree piece). Can you even play the "Concert" by Ibert? If not, please, don't make any comments about someone like Wincenc. Please...

I can and have. Lol. I think you'll find that I've improved since my performance of Jeux Sonatine. I think Jeux is a charming and enchanting piece, well within the reach of an intermediate flutist and the second movement is stunning.

There is something about her coloring and those who've studied with her that I just can't stand. It sounds like the player want their sound to be intimate (almost like muffled or under water) and their vibrato narrow and fast, making the sound closed off even more. Many years ago, I was told this type of sound is so called the "New York" sound. Shallow and nasal with fast vibrato She's a legendary artist who's made this a trademark, kudos.

Great flutist, no doubt! Beautiful and very delicate sound. I would like you to replace your head-joint or even your flute. Too little Projection... Get one of Mancke or Nagahara head joints. U r a wonderful flutist and musician. I enjoyed your playing greatly. Thanks. Dr. Avi Eilam

Excessive vibrato makes the flute sound uniquely cheesy

I believe that the variety of rythmic changes in the first part should be emphasized more clearly without effecting the beat

Ugh, I hate her vibrato. Its too nannygoat-ish. I feel like she's killing the piece with vibrato and loudness. No doubt her finger technique and articulation is great, but her vibrato and tone are annoying in the cantabile section.

Jenifer Swanson I personally like Galway's version better. I'm actually learning this piece. I started out listening to Galway therefore I'm used to him bug she isn't bad.She just sounds different by using her own techniques. So don't hate on a perfessinal because they're different. Everyone has their own opinion.
