    The Devils Postpile in Devils Postpile National Monument in California is a columnar basalt rock formation. Columnar basalt is a volcanic rock that forms when lava cools slowly and evenly, causing cracks to form into hexagons. The Devils Postpile's columns are 40 to 60 ft (12 to 18 m) high and are considered one of the world's best examples of columnar basalt. The columns are closely fitted together, resembling a mosaic, and are especially long and regular. According to the park service, 55% of the pieces have six sides, 37% have five sides, 5% have seven sides, and the remaining 3% have four sides or fewer.

    I've been watching you hike my way. Glad you're holding up so well. When you get to Ebbets Pass, face due East and wave. Mine is the very next house, just 16.7 miles away. I'll be waving back in spirit.

    Devil's Postpile NM is a really cool place. I recommend to others who visit, take the short trail up to the top of the postpile. It's so neat to see all those columns from above! A nice side effect of the road construction this year is that it looks like you had it all to yourselves. I laughed when you showed the pay phone. We visited there 3 years ago, and one of my teenage sons, at that very phone, picked the receiver up, put it to his ear, and then asked, "Why is it making a buzzing noise?" My husband and I (in our 50s) along with another woman who was about our age just started laughing, because he was referring to the dial tone 😂😂

      Columnar Basalt. It's a characteristic of stress crack physics while molten rock cools - it can be extremely interesting in places where the molten rock entered something like an ash pocket so it forms the columns but the columns themselves are twisted or otherwise contorted along their lengths.
      Get a rope before you hit Oregon (once you're in the Klamath Mountains, you're nearly in Oregon, FYI).

    I am a mosquito magnet and I have been using a combination of permethrin and picaridin lotion for a few years now. It is the only combination that I can rely on the keep the mosquitos away. I treat my clothes, tent, and backpack then apply the lotion to any exposed skin. There has been a couple of times where I use the picaridin under my shirt or pants if the bugs are REALLY bad! Just sharing my experience with these products in case you or the others find it helpful.

  • @memathews
    @memathews 4 місяці тому +3

    Mosquitos! Yes, you'll see them the rest of the trip until late August-September, along with a few biting flies and no-see-ums (which actually leave larger welts after biting). But that iPod TV in Bird Call and Boss Bae's room was great, just missing the rotary scroll. And the It's It bar was a fun throwback to living in San Francisco, I don't see them anywhere else, certainly not where I live in Portland. I was happy to see Somewhere demonstrating permethrin (very effective against ticks) and the FlipFuel connector for folks who may be unaware of these items.
    tl;dr You are wearing a light colored shirt, that's one time that attracts fewer mosquitoes than a dark colored shirt (best is white or light tan, never deeper tones of red, blue, green, these can attract 100% or more of the little buggers).
    The two main attractants are heat and CO2, if you are cooler than others in the group or breathe less heavily at a stop, then you'll see fewer mosquitoes. Eating food containing garlic and onions can lower your mosquito attraction. I've found DEET is messy and not particularly effective for very long. A smoky fire around camp can keep the mosquitoes at bay. I just wear an REI Sahara long sleeve shirt and pants, the woven fabric loosely draped is difficult for them to attack through compared to knitted material like a sun hoody. Also, leather gardening gloves protect your hands and a headnet is essential to keep you sanity when you hit Oregon.
    When you reach Timberline Lodge you can resupply from down the mountain by riding the Mt Hood Express into Zigzag, Oregon, it's about $2.50 each way and takes about a half-hour or so depending on the bicycles being loaded. You can also go further to Sandy, Oregon for much bigger stores and selections, including a small selection of outfitters. And from Sandy all the way to Portland for much bigger selections of outfitters (4 REI stores, Next Adventure, and more) and resupply foods (vegan, vegetarian, carnivore, international ethnic foods, and more).

    Way back in I think 1992 I was on a helicopter crew and we were on a huge fire in the Mammoth Lakes area. One day just the pilot and myself were in the helicopter, we had just dropped off a crew nearby and he asked if I had see Devils Postpile, I hadn't. He flew us over there and we hovered right in front of it and it was amazing. I loved seeing your view of it! Oh, and I had the best french toast of my life in Mammoth Lakes! I highly recommend permethrin before you too far into NorCal and Oregon. More ticks and way more mozzies up there. I sat with a dozen other hikers one night along Hat Creek. All of them were eating in full rain gear and head nets, while I just sat in my treated clothing without a mozzy getting within a foot of me. Most of them said they were going to treat their gear at the next chance. Treating tent, pack and shoes is also a good idea.
