This is the most recent example of a perfect pop song. The progression allows the song to sound as if there is a circular bass movement without using a single additional bass note i.e. / chords.
A - C#m - F#m - C#m - D - E - A = I - III - VI - III - IV - V - I
This song shines in the chorus, where a different melody accompanies the progression from Gram Parsons' 'Grievous Angel'. With an added I7no3 for feel.
D - E - (A->C#m->F#m) D - E - A - A7no3 = IV - V - (I->III->VI) IV - V - I - I7no3

Brilliant. The only song that rivals it is Ariel Pink's, Put your number in my phone. Thanks for this lesson on the craft, a great song and maladaptive daydreams Chris.
