  • The Oselvar is a very old type of boat, and over the past couple of centuries, it has been the most commonly used small boat along the west coast of Norway, both for fishing and transport. In the last hundred years, it has evolved into a purely recreational boat, and in the summer of 2009, the Oselvar was named Norway's National Boat! The boatbuilding tradition has remained unbroken in Os for at least the past 250 years, preserving all the accumulated knowledge related to boatbuilding. In this video, you will see how we build a "seksæring." This boat is approximately 630 cm long and is built in the same way they did in the 1800s.
In 2016, the Oselvar and its associated culture were included in UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. And in 2021, the entire Nordic clinker boat tradition was inscribed on UNESCO's list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. © Vidar Langeland/ Oselvarverkstaden
