Russia resorts to 'turtle tank' with rudimentary roof to protect from Ukrainian drones

- A mysterious modified “turtle tank” fielded by Russian forces has emerged on the battlefield in eastern Ukraine.
At least three of these corrugated iron-clad machines, which resemble a shed, have been spotted on social media over the past few weeks.
The latest version was seen pushing Russian forces into the west of Krasnohorivka, a village in the Donetsk region, under intense Ukrainian artillery fire.
It is fully enclosed in a shell of corrugated metal, meaning its turret has no ability to move like a standard main battle tank.
The vehicle is mounted with a mine plough, suggesting it is being used as a breacher to break through Ukrainian fortifications during a mechanised assault.

@@theincrement4898 idk about anti tank systems but it mortars and unguided shells are gonna have a hard time penetrating the armor underneath as would many other munitions and not even drones could take it out because it was retrofitted with a EW system so drones can't even come close to hitting the damn thing.
@@theincrement4898the outer layer act like the first shield against ATGM, any tandem warhead after penetrate the shells outside will encountered the large space in between called space armor, which they lose a lot of energy and cannot hit, ornall tandem warheads activated when contacted with the outer shells. Left the inside intact. Small caliber HE cannot penetrare the outer layer, the same for sucide drones (if they can bypass the jamming device on top).
Don't forget that this tank is protected from explosives by the same armor

That's crafty, thebtank shown has a mine clearing blade fitted. They're able to drive up and push AP mines out of the way clearing it for infantry whilst safe from drone attack. Inventive and it works.
If it works, then it is not stupid... Adapt and overcome! If the Ukrainian army had done this, then of course it would not be a NAFO laughing stock, but the ingenuity of the Ukrainian soldiers would be praised to the skies...

It actually works. There's a footage where the Ukrainian tried to shoot the tanks with their drones, but it doesn't do any damage at all.
It's almost like launching a genocidal invasion upon a peaceful neighbour didn't engender one side any good will. How odd.

This war is way past aestethics. Anything that works well and cheap is actually a logical solution even if its ridiculous.
Shape chargers require a certain distance and angle when striking the target for successful penetration. The "turtle tank" thwarts this by forcing the munition to detonate early, severely limiting its ability to cause damage. Almost all anti-tank munitions are shape charges.
i think its meant for slowing down the fragments and molten metal from the rpg round spaced armor was also used in ww2 but its debateable how effective the metal plating is that they used

That tank still appears to be attackable via FPV drone, both the front and rear of the turtle shell were open so it appears both the driver/driver's optics/drivers hatch and engine deck (edit: or back of the turret possibly if it dosn't have gear strapped to it) are likely vulnerable.
As is the suspension. Get a mobility kill and then attack the crew should they emerge, with anti personel grenades.
I know backseat driving (piloting) , but it does appear possible.
I know I could fly 5-7" FPV drone into the front or rear opening and O'm an average pilot at best.
FPV drones can hit withn a few inches of accuracy under reasonable conditions so I think there is more to this story than mobile carports.

It went through Krosnoharivka(currently under Ukrainian control), roamed a bit and returned in one piece(was damaged by FPV drones though). The reason it went viral because it revealed that the Ukranian Army left a huge gap krosnoharivka. Russians didn't krosnoharivka though and quietly returned to their positions.

@@lordcommanderainz419 all the tanks that have this kind of damage and cannot be repaired are getting those cages and often get de-mining gear, they still get the job done even if a different one compared to original purpose ...at least until enemy dont study/find a solution

I in no way support Russia but it will work as it will make the rounds prematurely detonate making it harder for it to penetrate the main armour. The uk and USA so the same thing on MRAPS

First, there is a drone jammer on top, second, the outer armor act like a shield. Sucide drones will exploded on that shield or if they can penetrated, they will quickly lose energy due to the space between the outer layer and tanks act as space armor. Third, ATGM and traditional RPG lack of kinetic penetration and will exploded on the outer layer, melted it and shoot the moltern metals to inside. However, due to the space armor, the moltern metals deal no damage to the tank. Fourth, it prevent commander to open the hatch and let some sneaky drones drop a grenade to.
