I have made pads from layers of silver foil bubble insulation stuck together with double-sided tape and at night I fit these into the roof vents and between the hab area windows and silver drop-down blinds. Cheap simple and toasty. They also help as sound insulation.
Brilliant video👍 I’m living in a van now and I’m heading into my first winter in it so it’s great to know all the tips and tricks from an experienced vanlifer like you
The best to keep me warm was always watching the legendary "motorhome monday" show here on youtube, but this guy really decided not to make it any longer! So life makes not much sense anymore and most likely I will freeze when the winter arrives here. 😮💨🤥🥶Thank you Mr. Daz !
Haven’t you heard? Daz and *Team Urban* are bringing back Motorhome Mondays!😎 Check the announcement at the end of this video! 🍾 ua-cam.com/video/v13uAaYFHjw/v-deo.html
We use thermal foil stuff from toolstation. I measured it to fit the windows and the hab door and between the cab and hab area. Add a few inches so you can fold it over, thread some curtain wire and hang like you would curtains. Rolls up and ties back in the day. We have also lined cupboards and under the seats with it. Its amazing how much cold it keeps out.
Good tip about leaving the taps open, I had pipes freeze in my motorhome last year and I was wondering if I need to drain down or not next time it drops below 0. This sounds like a much better option!
At home you can get draughts through light fittings, sockets and switches, you can buy gaskets for them. Best air house and bed during day time use one room with windows open door closed to dry clothes.
Soft furnishings absorb noise too, I piggy backed another set of curtains on those already at the window in the house that go to the floor and it makes the room feel much more upmarket.
I lived in a Fiat Doblo micro-camper (it was properly converted by a specialist company in Leeds called "Compact Campers"). I did that throughout winter around Dartmoor and Exmoor. I didn't have any extra heating source so if I wanted heat I was forced to run the engine but I did buy and find very useful a portable heater which used the butane cylinders which most camping/caravan people will be familiar with. If I did it again I would definitely want more space and additional heating.
thanks so much for this i have loads of these things but just didn't think to use them lol😂 i also have bought a low watt dehumidifier with air filter as i live with 2 dogs and my cat . i'll say no more.
best way to keep mould and damp down is to run a dehumidifier - it needs to stay under 68% relative humidity in all places to prevent mould - perfect if you can manage a power draw of about 500-600watt - the water extracted is very pure
It's cheaper to just run your diesel heater constant with plenty of ventilation than it is to try and produce 500w of power constant I know some people have big solar systems but solar sucks here in the UK in winter
I find it simple run you heating and plenty of ventilation in winter and your have no problems with damp or cold I run my diesel heater pretty much constant and control the temperature with open windows. I played with my diesel heater settings to get it as low as possible and I use about 2 litres a day on lowest setting
If you are living in a camper a good heat source is one of those plant pot heaters using tea lights on a good heat resistant surface and never left alone of course but good emergency heat
Good tips and going to steal a couple 👍🏻 Your water tank is underslung on your particular motorhome (E425) I think you might be referring to your mini hot water cylinder? I have thought about using Jackoboard to insulate the tank on the outside, will see how this winter goes. Your correct though the majority of the pipework is on board 👍🏻 Defo going to be looking into keeping those Giraffes out 😂
This is my first winter in the van but it's not really gotten cold yet this year, hoping that my LPG heater is sufficient when the cold eventually comes! Love your videos mate keep it up ❤️
@@lovelyjubbly87 yes lol it's pretty cold in there when I've been out for a while, but the heater does keep it nice and warm in there once its had time to heat up 😊 just need to make sure I don't ever run out of LPG!!
If you want cheap heat then i'd suggest investing in a plug in 500W ceramic space heater £10 - 15 on Ebay..... You won't regret it, costs next to nothing to run
I use a Karcher window vac in our motorhome and as you say, it's great for removing condensation from the cab windows. However, I wonder how good it would be in your new A class where it's such a long stretch to the front windscreen?
Hi mate I’ve just bought a 2001 motorhome and we are staying in a local campsite on Sunday for 3nights to see how things work. Weather says down to 0 to -1 it’s got blow air heating and the boiler is under the seat in the rear lounge. We will have the heating on over night do you think the boiler Weil be ok or freeze up ( our first motor home not much on UA-cam on this subject for Uk)
Hello and thanks for all your great videos. Just have to ask, when you did your heating only with gas, how much gass, did you use in say 24 hrs? Cheers from Norway
Hiya m8! Good videos. I’ve got a van same size as youres I’m looking to fit diesel heater but not sure how many KW would be best ? Don’t wanna go to mad & it drains battery to quick? What do you think please?
Diesel heaters all seem to pull about 8-10 amps or 100-ish watts on start-up... Regardless of the heat output. After that, there might be a higher electricity use for the larger fuel pump, dosing and the fan. 2KW is usually good for a panel van, but those are hard to find - usually the exact same heater as the 5KW with a different circuit board. 5KW is a sensible size for a moho and you don't *have* to run it on full.
Nice vid! Not sure if diesel heater cycle similar to propex, but how long does yours stay off in the winter? Currently its 2C outside and 20C inside with my propex hs2000, but the temp drops by 1C within 30 minutes and the propex turns on again. Is this bad? I have tons of drafts around doors... Old VW... Thats the next thing to do...
Thanks for an interesting video. This is our first winter and just seen it’s getting to -1 / -2 next week. My worst fear is frozen pipes. We have oil radiator and electric fan set on a temp plug in thing at 22c, should that help prevent freezing pipes? 😅
If your pipes are inside the vehicle, I imagine so. If they're under the vehicle, there could be problems. My grey water pipe froze in that last cold snap, so I had to bail out my sink when it wouldn't drain. I resorted to running a temporary drain pipe inside the vehicle and out a floor vent. You may be able to wrap external pipes and I've known people wrap their external tanks and even add heater elements.
Would it be possible to hook the outlet of the diesel heater to the piping of the Truma blown air system so the heat is distributed around the motorhome?
Truma ducting is 65mm in diameter, so you would need an adapter from the 75mm outlet of the diesel heater (60mm for a 2KW size). That’s the easy bit, I reckon. Finding a location where you can drop the diesel heater through the bottom of the motorhome AND be close to the truma ducting could be a challenge. I don’t know how that might work if you wanted to *keep* both heat sources, however if you want an example of a diesel heater replacing a truma in a modern motorhome, John & Mandy did that with the Bürstner they sold this year - they put it in the garage. I’m sure they made a video a video on their install which kept the truma ducting. Co-incidentally, I was having this exact conversation with John tonight. Spooky.
@@Mevi I looked at the Chinese clone of the truma diesel combi heater to replace the current truma gas combi, but at almost £900 plus shipping, plus import duty it’s out of my price range. I wish my existing truma had an electric element in it for use on hookup but sadly it’s gas only.
