The prices now are completely insane....a yio360 experimental thunderbolt is close to 55k through Vans and I think closer to 60k without the Vans discount. In 2020 it was 32k, that's like a 75% increase un 2 years. Their costs haven't risen that much, they see how much people are paying for planes and know they can gouge because people don't have a choice. I know, I know things have gotten more expensive but when you can buy a state of the art high performance car for 80k and your paying that for a 50 year old technology engine something is very wrong. Cant wait for the recession to hit and their orders bottom out, or a new competitor to force them to get more competitive.
Ps a measly 2 year warranty, and less if you go with higher compression.....for 60k!!! Hahaha

It's because of reducing sales that their prices have gone up. These engines are actually 100 years old by design. So many engine options available for the experimental market that are cheaper and better.
I completely agree. I've made comments about this before and people always blast me saying "you can't compare aircraft parts to cars cause there is less economy of scale". The interesting thing is that a car is actually harder to build by hand and the equipment to make a modern car engine is more expensive. It's true that aircraft and aircraft engines aren't often produced on the same scale as the cheapest economy cars but they are produced on the same scale as most sports cars are. If GM can make a small production run car like a Corvette for 70K USD, you should be able to build a fully ready to fly Cessna 172 for 90K or a Cirrus SR22 for 140K. Companies have positioned themselves to appeal to a wealthy demographic that has historically had enough money to not care about value. Today's younger professionals are value oriented, even when they have 6 figure salaries. As the younger boomers and older Gen X'ers age out of the hobby, companies will start to fail if they don't start adapting now while their margins are still excellent, the smart companies should have been investing in automation 10 to 15 years ago. The fact that prices are have been climbing year over year tells me the people at the top of Lycoming are prioritizing stock buy backs and short term gains over long term re-investment into the company.

You have little technical advances for 1/2 century. That is why Rotax with liquid cooling and a gear box still weight less than the 235.
Would have been nice to have known what the plan is (if there is one) regarding IE2 in the Thunderbolts. He probably couldn't have said anything, though.

I was looking at this months issue of kit planes, the cost of the Lycoming makes me want to throw up. Over priced and for the same tech thats essentially unchanged. They are going to kill their own business with what coming with fuels and regulations.
Antiques are expensive.
And FAA actively wont budge on automotive Engines for certified planes. When they will burn unleaded fuel and are far more efficient
@@Optimus-Prime-Rib The last I knew, the FAA did not have different certification standards for engines from a different manufacturer. If someone wanted to certify an auto engine for aviation use, I am not aware of anything at the FAA that prevents that.
@@LTVoyager The problem with this issue is that the automotive companies are not the ones who are "converting" car engines for use in experimental aircraft. So they have no interest in trying to get them certified nor do I think that legally can one of the "auto conversion" companies do it either since the base or core engine was not built by them. The patents for those engines are held by the actual car manufacturers not the auto conversion companies. I also have read and seen where the car manufacturers that have attempted to do it, abandoned the projects do to small numbers and large liability.
I wish Lycoming had IE2 technology in the Thunderbolt line. I want a modern auto style engine for my S-21 and Rotax was the only realistic option. It is unfortunate as I live only an hour’s drive away from Lycoming, but they are just too slow with modern technology (about 30 years behind auto tech) on most of their engines. I also prefer liquid cooling, but would have bought an air cooled engine if it had modern electronic fuel injection, ECU controlled electronic ignition, knock sensors to handle a wider range of octane fuel, etc., but alas only Rotax comes close to the ideal.
Does anybody else has a sticker shock?
No touch and goes for the first 50 hours- that is a bummer. You want to do a proper test flight period for the experimental to confirm all the landing and starting distances for you specific airframe. Is it common? I thought the first 2-3 h of brake in is crucial, then you can do what you want

Overpriced ancient engine technology.
Is it just me or does this Lycoming guy seem kind of clueless about his own product? Maybe he was nervous on camera but sure didn’t seem to know his own product very well or be very good at selling why it’s the best.
