When you set the gps for the final approach etc to a runway, if you set to final vectors, it will set the point in line with runway about 15-20 nm out. If you do not change from final vectors if you activate gps, it will fly you directly at the entry point then try to make some impossible turn. Either change this to a entrance pattern, or STAR (Standard Terminal Arrival Route) or manually fly to the start of the final vector so you are facing the correct direction and angle to make the arrival.
When you are locking into the ils on the runway, if you are not coming into the runway from the correct direction, you will go down and towards the end of the runway, but from the 180 degree opposite direction. Therefore, to use the ILS properly, you must fly perpendicular to the runway, 20nm or so out to give you some maneuverability room and then turn to face the runway and continue the approach from there.
@vinkelnisse If you are within range of the ATIS-report, usually about 100DME, and the frequency is tuned into your active com frequency, com 1 or com 2, depending on which com frequency you have active curently, it should automatically start and repeat infinitely until you are out of ranged or change frequency/switch active com channel.
@torero34 If you tune your Com1 / Com2 radio frequency to the frequency for the ATIS frequency found in the GPS screen, and have the correct Com channel selected, it will automatically begin to play the ATIS report. Usually, you will do this on Com2 channel and instead of switching to from Com1 to Com2 you will just listen in to Com2 radio instead, however, some standard FSX planes do not have this feature, therefore just put in Com1 and switch the frequency over with the active frequency.
@chriswadegaming This I am not 100% sure of, but I believe you are supposed to leave it in till on the ground or autopilot has been switched off. As this beeping confirms you are still receiving signals from the ILS.
@chriswadegaming It really depends on the approach. In FSX, the approach is not always dead accurate, especially in bad weather, so if you are in nice weather, good approach you can leave it on for longer and turn it off around decision height for the airport so that you can flare the aircraft appropriately. The decision height is the last point that if your are not set up for landing, you announce a go-around and carry out the procedure. This is usually around 200 - 300 feet above the ground.
@Zeragon33 If the conditions are bad and you are not perfectly lined up, don't be afraid to turn it off earlier, around 1000 feet, to line up properly and land the plane perfectly. The jolting up is probably due to the trim, when it is in autopilot, the trim will be constantly set by the autopilot, so therefore when you turn it off, you may not have your joystick at the right place. ps. When I am talking about height, this is not height above sea level, but height above the ground.
@erik9719 Thing is you cant. FSX is not advanced enough to do this. Basically, the FSX default ATC will bring you in at either a 30 or 60 degree angle onto the localizer. So with the GPS, you don't use it on a landing to fly the plane, but you use it as a visual guideline and use the ILS to fly the plane in. The ATC will always take you off the GPS when it is guiding you into an airport.
@erik9719 The same as in real life, the only difference is that the FSX ATC does not use STAR's (Standard Terminal Arrival Route) so it will take control of you much earlier, and not allow you to fly any standardised route into an airport and then be giving instructions from the hold into the final vectors. Hope this helps.
@Zeragon33 Therefore it will climb or descend dependent on the trim, so try to hold the joystick at the right angle before you turn off the altitude hold switch. Hope this helps.
The author of this video forgot to mention 3 little but IMPORTANT things. 1. You must start a flight plan with IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) checked and NOT with VFR!!! 2. Some planes (e.g. Airbus 321) MUST have the NAV1 CALL button activated, otherwise you WON'T RECEIVE the morse code (ILS won't work at all)! 3. When activating the NAV for ILS, be sure you activate the APR as well!! If you think this comment was useful, then thumbs up so that it stays on top for other newbies. Thanks!
@ScOoTeRoOtEr12 Theres many places to find this out, in FSX and on the web. For uk airports, you can use nats-uk to find out all the codes for airport. If its not, just go to the flight planner in fsx and type the name of the airport in their and it will show you the code of it. I do also believe on the gps it should also say the name on one of the tabs once you select EGBB as the airport.
@Heeland1 My computer is pretty top of the range, but my laptop, which I am writing this on, is not very good but FSX still works. Of course it does not look as good because you cannot max out settings etc., but it should work. Depends how standard you mean by a laptop, i.e Proper graphics card or one of the intel inbuilt graphics cards.
@Zeragon33 @ScOoTeRoOtEr12 Can't post link of Nats-Uk in the comments, but just search nats-uk in google and get nats-uk.ead.it.com and go to Aerodrome Index Specific. It also gives you loads of information about airports, real life SIDs and STARs as well as many more. I use this a lot for UK flying. There are similar websites for US airport as well.
Im wondering, how do you make the GPS cooperate with ATC? I mean, you cant really select just a random runway and approach, right? How do i make the GPS show the route of the approach ATC assigns you to? Cause when i created a flight plan in Flight planner, I made it so that the waypoints leaded me to the runway, but the ATC assigned me to another runway. Please help thank you :) i hope you understood what i meant.
Great video. Could you do a video of a short flight from Birmingham to Manchester for us idiots out there using the GPS and autopilot, explaining everything ? I can follow most of it but the aircraft seems to fly straight over the airport when I put on the nav button forthe ILS frequency.Pressing approach does nothing.. Thankyou
Thx for replying. Do i have to turn and face the runway manually or is there a way to use GPS and do it? I tryied using GPS but it just makes the plane go VERY close to the runway then turn and line up with it, which cleary will not work cuz a 737 can't manuver that fast. If i have to line up with runway manually then what do i do if the weather is close to zero visablily??? What would be the point of ILS anyway?
Nice Video, but i got a problem. I see that in your videos, you were flying straight into the runway. What do I do if i am flying perpendicular to the runway (example approaching into Vancoucer from Settle). When i press the APP switch the plane will turn and dive into the ground. Is it beacuse it can't detect the localizer when the plane is perpendicular to the runway??? What should I do? Please help me. :(
Im really confused, becouse my boeing 737-800 cockpit dosent look like that, the gps buttons is missing. And i have the original pre-installed boeing 737-800 from fsx, whats wrong?
when you are flying with the ils, you have to fly with 2100 feets, and when you are near of the airport, you have to go down, this is the answer jefflui. obviously. the altimeter is very important
I am wondering about these comments regarding the "lip-smacking" and "tongue-smacking". One has to have a fairly strong case of ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) to not only notice that but actually be "annoyed" by it. I was so engrossed in listening and noting the instructions that I did not notice the so called "smacking" at all until I read the comments below and even then I was hard-pressed to hear their occurrence. I wonder how these folks would fare in a lecture hall with 300+ graduate students there with a whole bunch of them noisily chewing gum :) Great tutorials - thank you!
what airport did u takeoff from and when i try to do everything you did it just doesn't seem to work please help me i just want to land the bloody plane
I have watched this again and again and it is very helpful but no matter what button i press or frequency i tune in i cannot get that little pink diamond for the glide path to come up. It seems like i have tried everything but im obviously missing something. Could you please tell em how you get that up :D Thanks
You should become a pilot! Grab some training at a local airport and grab a license. With your knowledge, you can become a a380 captain in a few years!
I have watched so many videos on ILS tutorials and this series is by far the best! Thanks a lot!

@Robert420L Thanks alot. I do plan to do some more soon. But busy with university.
@TheRobaroba It won't mess it up at all. It will be fine.

I think with this one I actually recorded it in Camtasia, but Fraps will work just as well.
Thanks bro!! pretty good video
would you mind doing one for the b747 ?
Thank, this helped me a lot, but how do you know when to start, like turning on nav and all
A little after take off
Do i have to have an IFR flight plan first in order to do all these or can i just type in the GPS my destination?

This helped a great deal, thanks for the info. Maybe a new video using the FMC (freeware one).

what screenrecordor do you use to make this video's ?
is Zeragon answering any of his comments anymore?

from what i gathered, you must be under 3000ft and flying at 180kts in order for the plane to catch the glideslope..correct me if im wrong.
Yes, you need to intercept the glidescope from below. Also, make sure you've set the NAV/GPS switch to NAV on your autopilot.
very good clear video..well done
@Zeragon33 I see now. Thanks!!
Great job, a very good tutorial!
Thank you my friend for clear explanation.
Thank you for your help. Very helpful.
@hakimihomayoon Your welcome
what does APR mean
your work is great the best to learn thx a lot
If flying ILS manually without using ATC you don't need any of those.
Very helpful -thanks!
Thnks, great tutorial.
WOW! That helps A LOT! :)
very good video! Thanks!
Yep, I'm KieranPollard. You may notice me doing ATC alot. :)
best tutorial ever..................:D
Awsome many thanks !!!! learn a lot....
little annoyed by the smacking of the mouth :P
nice..are you are real pilot?
@taldzor I wish :) But no unfortunately, I'm not.
@kevini15 Yeh :)
thank you
You should buy pmdg737 that's where the real work starts
@Zeragon33 nats-uk.ead-it.com*
GJ man! It works :D
You should become a pilot!
Grab some training at a local airport and grab a license.
With your knowledge, you can become a a380 captain in a few years!
Need to work on that tongue smacking. Otherwise, good info.
I use FSrecorder
thank you very much bro.
Hey I love ur accent dude :)
Thanks! :)
Stop bloody smacking your tounge
APR = APPROACH
J
STAY IN LAND!!!!!!!!!!
Come to the USA, join the Civil Air Patrol, get a license for free :D
I wish you woud not slurp your mouth. It is very distractive and I can't bear it any longer!
