Ryan Symancek i've been watching your series ever since the first episode! In some way, you missed the hayday of the channel you're on with matt farah and chris harris and those people but equally, you are keeping that spirit alive. please continue this series and feel free to visit and interview legends of the sport, just like that pirelli tire launch with the 037, s4 and the whole old legendary men club...
Been watching since the beginning of My Life As A Rallyist and honestly the most impressive thing has been watching Ryan's progression as a driver!! Ryan you can seriously wheel!
This video is pretty old, but here's a tip: leave it in sport mode, turn ESC *completely* off (hold down the button for 5 seconds), and do this with the winter wheel/tire combo. With ESC fully off it'll get *way* more sideways, even without drift mode. Also, when a channel as big as The Drive let's this much nonsense get published (stay in school kids, or you'll have to BS your way through life like the guy in the video instead of actually knowing what you're talking about), I have to chime in, even if I'm way late: The PTU does *not* send anywhere near all of the power to the back 99% of the time, even with drift mode engaged, except in an extremely stressing case where it's detecting that the front wheels have no grip and the driver is demanding hard acceleration with throttle input.. even in that case it has to apply the front brakes to send *nearly* all of the torque to the back. It also *cannot* multiply the ratio 1.8 times at the back... That's a myth that's been floating around ever since some mathematically challenged reporter heard that the rear shaft turns 1.8 *percent* faster than the front, but quoted it as 1.8 *times*... It's 1.018 times the rotational rate of the front wheels. The car *cannot* shut down the front diff. By default all of the power goes to the front unless the clutch packs in the RDU are engaged. The clutch packs are I believe 7 plate wet clutches. All of the plates spin at the same rate, there are just 7 of them to have more contact area (which helps keep the heat down.. less friction is required to get the same torque transfer). Drift mode is just a computer setting to go-to a relaxed ESC mode and more aggressively send power to the rear, *especially* the outside rear wheel if you're on the throttle in a turn. If you don't disable ESC completely, it will prevent you from spinning out (or often even from holding much of a slide) no matter how ham-fisted you are. If you want some proper drifts, you need to disable ESC. It's more tail-happy in *sport* mode with ESC off than in drift mode with the ESC partially on.
No problem. It was so nice to see video from you again as it had been a while and to see more than one really was refreshing. Remember if you ever want feel free to reach out to me. Probably best to do so on Facebook at least initially. I do feel bad I never really followed up on your message to me there but I do have physical disabilities that make texting and looking at screens difficult. Good spirit to you Ryan I really do appreciate what you do and the fact that your heart shows through.
Rented an Infiniti Q50 3.0t AWD that car could rally. Found that out when the GPS for the shortest route from southern VA to NC into Granville Co was a blast. Never knew it was a twin turbo. Very fun car.
Surprisingly there's no noticeable chips or anything from this. A few weeks after this Alex ran over a concrete divider thing on the road he didn't see going to get pizza... the car jumped over it in the air, and somehow not much noticeable damage from that either! That car's a beast!
Was always curious what a stock RS was like on gravel in different modes. I too thought it was suppose to feel terrible on gravel because of the suspension
I would have put my winter Tires (on sparco corsas) on before I beat my Pilot super Sports, in gravel/dirt. I'm guessing Alex's tires were ready to be replaced anyway?
Not many taking on gravel cause its too low and comes standard with 19s. I cracked the sidewall of one of the R19s driving on a dirt road at 10 mph. Keeping it on road as much as possible unless someone can tell me how to easily get more ground clearance. Hah just noticed they popped the tire in the vid, no crap 😂
I met a few of them at Wales GB (like Robert Kubica randomly on a couch in a hotel haha)... but didn't get any time to really chat with any of them. I did interview Hayden Paddon years ago, before his Hyundai signing on an old My Life as a Rallyist. Hayden is awesome and I'd love to do something more with him.
Ryan Symancek Ah yea, thats right, I'd been wondering where I'd seen that interview at. Seems so long ago. Well at least in the future it be cool to see you chat with him, Latvala, Breen or Ostberg as they seem like more approachable people.
Yeah I'd love to talk with Breen! And the others too obviously. But the newcomer attitude Breen has in the car is something that I'm really drawn to. I think it's pretty cool to see him teamed up with Meeke. I really like that structure.
RS is a good car but I hear that piston #2 doesn't like to stay in one piece. And the stock brakes also lit on fire in that one (was it motor trend?) video, although they were racing down hill then just stopped with no cooldown.
is the technical info in the beginning of this video correct? "clutches in the diff causing changes in gear ratio" The ptu sending all the power to the back, sounds off to me. Glad the took the car off road all the same
James Steed lol I'd like to see someone take a stock golf R on anything but pavement, would absolutely destroy it. also they really haven't been in the spotlight much cause they're just not as fun or exciting as their competition.
I drove one stock.Boring haldex-induced-understeering shitboxes, sickening to think about what would happen if you brought one up to 400+whp, would end up in a pure throtlle-on-understeer snoozefest. They could tune one faster than a Ferrari in a straight line for all i care, still wouldn't touch one with a 10ft bargepole.
+Mitchell nelson drove my buddies Golf R recently in the snow and it sucked , chronic understeer and the electronic nanny barking constantly trying to control every little slide. Even if you tune the car, there is no permanent or complete deletion of the traction / slide control system , it's always there lurking like a stalker. Going to seriously rethink buying one to replace my current mk4 jetta with complete TT drivetrain and a stand alone haldex system , my jetta completely ridiculed the golf R in the snow. The focus RS is starting to look good.
Bryan Duarte it’s a race car not a car bought from a dealer. Even if it was bought from the dealer the spare is put in the trash because it’s a horrible wheel for rally, it would snap. So they have a spare O.Z wheel or other type that can handle rally.
That's by far the BEST explanation of the drive system for the RS I've heard on UA-cam! Too bad the man is clinically insane to allow his friend to rally the brand new car.
Except that a lot of what he said was incomplete or flat wrong. The PTU does *not* send anywhere near all of the power to the back 99% of the time, even with drift mode engaged, except in an extremely stressing case where it's detecting that the front wheels have no grip and the driver is demanding hard acceleration with throttle input.. in that case it has to apply the front brakes to send *nearly* all of the torque to the back. It's 1.018 times the rotational rate of the front wheels.
Haha, me too! But I think I'm a little behind the curve age wise and more importantly dolla bill wise! Obviously, it's a dream though. Even to just start a rally in a 2wd car like Chris Duplessis did (driver from the states) a few years back would be such an incredible honor. But that's a long road that I've barely stepped down.
Ryan Symancek you should contact some rally people from Finland. if you're fast enough you'll ever to drive an actual WRC car. there's many companies renting them out here.
Ryan, you can disable traction control in drift mode. Just have to turn the ESC off. Track mode does it for you, but you have to do it manually for drift mode.
The 2005 Focus needs an AWD set up added then it wouls be perfect! Also i think its actually 04-99 Foci, i think 05 is when the headlights were changed
Please oh please. Start uploading long shows back on UA-cam for free???? Please. I miss the old live and let drive with alex Roy and I miss the old Chris harris drive shows. And I also miss the muscle car show too. But once u guys switch to pay to watch. I haven't watched u guys
nice but can't beat skidding around in a powerful old car which isn't full of computers and diffs thinking' for you...and of course the sound these days isn't the greatest.

Rally is so under appreciated in the states
This should be a permanent year round show
I wish, but damn that'd be a hell of a a lot of work and rallying :) Certainly wouldn't complain about that!
Ryan Symancek you're getting good at this UA-cam thing. Keep it up, can't wait for more.

the look on buddies face when his friend is ripping up his car. hahah #worried
Been watching since the beginning of My Life As A Rallyist and honestly the most impressive thing has been watching Ryan's progression as a driver!! Ryan you can seriously wheel!
this series is the best series on the internet, please dont stop!!!

thanks for clearing this up, there seems to be a lot of misinformation floating around
Craigslist ad: 2017 Focus RS. Never raced or abused.
R N new tyres!
This series is on another level, this is top quality stuff and Ryan is such a down to earth guy makes it a pleasure to watch.
Nice Driving Ryan! Glad you had fun. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks John!

As a guy who lives in Franconia, and works in Littleton this makes me real happy.
Man, I'm sure I don't speak for myself when I say this is an amazing series!
I really like the genuine feeling in this video! Good job guys!
This thing is a beast! Love the awd
that was FWD !!!!!111
Focus ST is fwd while Focus RS is awd.
but i ment the rally focus 2005 !!!!!!!1111 not the RS !!!!!!!11111oneoneone
Great series! It has been cool to see the progression over the years.
Rented an Infiniti Q50 3.0t AWD that car could rally. Found that out when the GPS for the shortest route from southern VA to NC into Granville Co was a blast. Never knew it was a twin turbo. Very fun car.
Best serie on youtube
it never matters what's on my sub feed, if I see "my life as a rallyist" that's what I watch.
:)
RESPECT to Alex for taking your new RS out and driving it like you should
God damn the mk1 rally focus is still one of my favourites. Good times.
Good Times! You guys have to come back and try Tim's Focus RS Rally Car now that it's finished.
I'll try it!
We can't wait to drive an RS next month.
Such an awesome series.....
Ey its the correct video now! Good job guys!
That fwd focus rally car is awesome

You guys are living my dream
Keep it up!
this pushed me to buy my own STI. I get it now
These videos are so fresh! That Ryan makes interesting videos!
Rip paint
Surprisingly there's no noticeable chips or anything from this. A few weeks after this Alex ran over a concrete divider thing on the road he didn't see going to get pizza... the car jumped over it in the air, and somehow not much noticeable damage from that either! That car's a beast!
nicely done
the owner looks so worried
.
You should see Ken Block as a passenger XD
Love it Ryan!
I need to take a trip to this school over the summer
me too, I'm going to hang out in the woods in a samsquantch outfit and jump out when people are driving by.
Here for Focus RS video's!
This is awesome
Love it mate! Production level has been rising every episode mate.
Would love to get out to Tims rallyschool if I ever get over to the US.
Miss this series :(
Great compact car
Nice gravel machine gun shirt!
"Are you ok with beating the sh!t out of it? Absolutely!" .....yeah right....eye rolls
I don't believe my doctors would let me but I would love to go back to school.
Please make a 3rd season, or make this a year round show, I look forward to every episode
Good to see some Focus love! Are you guys going to try an RS with proper wheels and tires?
prerunnerwannabe focuses are great
Team o neill has bought one, they uploaded some videos already.
I love that he's wearing a DirtFish hat at Team O'Neil.
I attended both schools years ago, so I always like to bust team oneils balls when I'm there by wearing a dirtfish hat lol
Who else missed this guy and his story
Was always curious what a stock RS was like on gravel in different modes. I too thought it was suppose to feel terrible on gravel because of the suspension
Team O'neal already converted RS to rallycross car - check out their videos for more tests before and after.
Yeah it was way better than we thought it' be. We honestly thought it was gonna suck so bad. Our surprise was genuine.
I would have put my winter Tires (on sparco corsas) on before I beat my Pilot super Sports, in gravel/dirt. I'm guessing Alex's tires were ready to be replaced anyway?
The Focus of Theseus, is it even the same car anymore?
For gravel, stock or lifted ride height?
What's the track playing in the background? In the beginning....
Can we have bonus footage of rally Focus run? Nothing edited - straight out of camera with maybe PIP of cabin?
Not many taking on gravel cause its too low and comes standard with 19s. I cracked the sidewall of one of the R19s driving on a dirt road at 10 mph. Keeping it on road as much as possible unless someone can tell me how to easily get more ground clearance. Hah just noticed they popped the tire in the vid, no crap 😂
Ryan reminds me of Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker.
Man I would never offroad a car without mud flaps/ Rock Guards, RIP paint.
I really hope someday he can meet a current wrc driver. Also a real Group B car. Its like I want him to carryout my dream now haha

Ryan Symancek Definitely, I wish you the best of luck with meeting him
05 focus with a 00-04 front end?
Pretty sure the new STI's have a rear and centre diff.
IT FEELS REALLY GOOD! IT FEELS REALLY GOOD!
HOW GOOD DO YOU FEEL RIGHT NOW, BRO?
REALLY GOOD! YOU?
REALLY GOOD!
IT FEELS SO GOOD WITH YOU RIGHT NOW!
nice. upload the correct video. Drive be messing up the timeline, that's Barry's job.
603 reppin!!

Dude, what part of Maine do you hail from?
MonRoe x he’s not from Maine. He went to college there. I believe he’s from PA originally
Golf R ?
James Steed lol I'd like to see someone take a stock golf R on anything but pavement, would absolutely destroy it. also they really haven't been in the spotlight much cause they're just not as fun or exciting as their competition.
Mitchell nelson go drive one. I drove a stage 3 plus mk7 golf R and it absolutely smokes any of the competition even if they are tuned
I drove one stock.Boring haldex-induced-understeering shitboxes, sickening to think about what would happen if you brought one up to 400+whp, would end up in a pure throtlle-on-understeer snoozefest. doesn't come with a spare? Here in Brasil the car companies HAVE to sell the car WITH a spare tire

What's the intro music ?
hope to see you As a WRC driver one day
Haha, me too! But I think I'm a little behind the curve age wise and more importantly dolla bill wise! Obviously, it's a dream though. I didn't know my motorcycle had clutches in its axles lol
Hes talking about the type of clutch, motorcycles have wet clutches lol.
Someone pay off my new-ish Audi and I'll take the short drive upstate and show what the MQB platform can do at O'Neils
2nd.. woohoo!!
Yep. Bad upload. Fixed! Sorry.
The 2005 Focus needs an AWD set up added then it wouls be perfect! Also i think its actually 04-99 Foci, i think 05 is when the headlights were changed
Bring back Group B.
I love this show. Everything about it is great...... BESIDES the color grading! The color and tone is so yucky sometimes. It's really distracting.
i would have soooo much tape on my car lol
Please oh please. Start uploading long shows back on UA-cam for free???? Please. I miss the old live and let drive with alex Roy and I miss the old Chris harris drive shows. And I also miss the muscle car show too. But once u guys switch to pay to watch. I haven't watched u guys
Fiesta is more of a rally car than the RS
Cant rally on low profiles no way! Lol Team oneil downsized the brakes and runs 15s on their RS
6:17 his face
is this where roadkill went
nice but can't beat skidding around in a powerful old car which isn't full of computers and diffs thinking' for you...and of course the sound these days isn't the greatest.
FORGET THE NEW 2018 CIVIC TYPE R IT'S FF. THIS IS AWD...
Too bad the RS shares the same interior with the transit CargoVan.
so i see the numbers and for stock they r impressive but if this car is so great why is it gone already
I hope he got a clear bra on this before they ripped up that paint lol...
First time I see men speaking at the same time nobody listen to each other--Normally it's women style

Quality is ass
ughh, but it's a Ford
so? I don't see any other brand giving us fun hatches (VW is too heavy, Subbie lost its rally soul, Evo is gone).
Ughh, but it's a troll!
dreamintv that's why you tune cars. grab any of these cars used and you can get as much soul and power as you want
You must have been living under a rock for the past 5 years, Ford has been killing the performance car market.
Golf R?
