Future Gas Strategy: The Real Story | Richard Denniss
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 чер 2024
- The Government's Future Gas Strategy is a future climate disaster. It's hard to believe in 2024 we still have Governments pretending we need to expand fossil fuel production to “help tackle climate change”.
"This is a plan to expand the industry that's causing climate change, and we're greenwashing it and calling it a solution. It's sick."
- Richard Denniss, Executive Director of the Australia Institute.

I can’t express how maddening this is. I’ve had enough of it. I’ve been a life long labor voter and even a member of the party at one point. This will cost my vote. The politics and bullshit is just too much. At this point I’ll vote for anyone who will hold these corporations to account. It’s just utter insanity.
More disapointment from the mob we thought would change things for the better.
It's not denial, it's corruption.
*Capitalism
What a con. No wonder big business thinks they can treat us like cash cows. . The true story of our pathetic leadership. So if we look at what Labor has taken from lobbying in donations in 2yrs Is this proof of corruption? Because this isn't looking after Australians at all.
Labour are shit but the lnp are worse!
Being Western Australian, I can assure you that a Labor government can (f*@&) the environment with the best of them.
Our one government system with two shades of shite needs an overhaul
Yeah, the Juice Media call them F#@$ed and F#@$ed light.
"two shades of shite" poetry :D Exactly we need better options, the Greens have no hope, maybe the Teals could form a party. Wish the Australian Institute could form a party - we want rational and responsible government.
If only there were a voting system where citizens could do that.
@@SW-lw6mt The Greens have lost their way focussing on divisive 1st world issues instead of being the party of climate and environmental accountability.... I say that with a heavy heart , Teal independent is probably closest to a reasonable centre now
A very scary future ahead with either of the major parties at the helm.
It's hard to take Labor seriously after this announcement. This policy is an election loser!
Don't vote the right wing crims in, they are worse.
Vote independent with no strings attached.
Certainly wont work in there favor and theyd have to know that, so why 🤨
@@NathanCroucher Easy no competition, the only other options are worse or Labor in minority government.
We REALLY need Labor to be forced into coalition with Greens or Teals at the next election.
Too right. Albo just destroyed his and the parties credibility. People voted for change, not this spineless sellout. So disappointed .
Vote Independents & Greens to make Labor actual work for the Australian people instead of corporations.
Vote to remove all bribery/donations from politics. Only the Greens garentee this, independents can be bought
Green🤮
Good idea!
Use preferential voting wisely, Greens or good independents should get first preference, major parties down the bottom.
Not Labor, Liberal, teals or Greens, any other independents.
More fossil fuels is less fossil fuels just like up is down and Australian politicians are not transferring wealth out of Australia
Both Liberal and Labor are shit. So disappointed. Not voting for either next election
You will end up voting for Labor or the coalition if you vote properly.
You can always spot people who have no idea how to vote. "I'm not voting for them again!" If you voted properly, Australia wouldn't be in this mess!
Maybe if voting wasn't so obtuse on purpose, and our media was held to account, people might stand a chance.
@@zappy7393 right, but people have years to figure it out until the next time. The truth is most people don't care and are happy to be ruled and complain about it. Their actions reflect this.
Thank you Dr Dennis on your presentation. It is a sad state of affairs that Albanese and ALP have failed the Australian people. The ALP has sold the Australian people out and it’s clear that the ALP and Albanese iis not able to head up the ALP. 👍💥💥💥 💥💥🇦🇺 yes it is sick
I'm so confused as to why you guys don't get more views.
Their channel isn't very good. They seem completely ignorant of the lessons learned from mainstream media.
We are going to need gas "peaker" plants in Australia for quite a few more years, but there's no case, let alone and environmental one, to keep growing our gas exports. Albanese is eager to make easy political capital from things like domestic violence, but isn't willing to spend any of that capital on issues like climate change.
Lets negotiate with the gas industry starting with LESS new projects and MORE tax.
Nothing happens till the RUNNING & SCREAMING! ... then the dying.... but don't worry the Rich will be fine.
Labor lost my vote just after they got into office, the subs deal failing to properly deal with the housing crisis and the watering down of the federal ICAC. Now just yesterday they showed their hand by turning their backs on the unemployed and pensioners and now this environmental disaster, oh and when did gas become renewable?
What does that even mean? Does it mean you've been voting labor 1 in elections?
Labor is doing a lot more stupid things than just that.
Thanks for holding a light to the issues. But, until the majority of the population is impacted by your (great) points on client science and economics; policy will always benefit those who can speak the loudest.
Thanks Denniss for highlighting the lack of strategy in the future gas strategy. Clearly the Albanese Government have been captured by the gas lobbyists on this vital energy policy. We need a public interests test before more of our gas is approved for export
Spot on!
Very informative video - thank you for making us aware!
Labor who I voted for need to listi to this and back track immediately ! Bloody disgusting!
So infuriating. They have lost my vote. Greens for me next election.
hilarious how they're against nuclear, but for gas lol
Why would they have your vote, anyway, when Australia has ranked choice, and there are better alternatives?
@@AussieZeKieL where are they for gas?
@@antonyjh1234 The current gov want to use gas to firm up renewables instead of nuclear.
@@AussieZeKieL
Nuclear isn't good idea in Australia.
May be useful elsewhere (colder countries with much higher energy demands)
Thanks for the truth
Thankyou ❤️
Speaking truth to power! Why do we risk allowing ourselves to be hoodwinked!!
Australian Labor have wedded themselves to most of Morrison's policies. We voted Morrison out not to get more of the same. Bring on a Green independant coalition. These people in power are unfit.
The Labor government has done some good things, however their record on environmental issues is extremely disappointing. The continuation of harvesting of native forests and land clearing is a related issue that is mostly ignored. How can we possibly expect CO2 emissions to reduce when governments allow the destruction of the trees that absorb CO2 and produce oxygen. It's absurd. It's almost as though we have to continue to degrade our environment because it isn't cost-effective not to do so. It's getting hard to be optimistic.
Thank you for the accurate information.
Earth is past 1.5 deg already.
Spot on. Follow the money
I thought we had a little while to go to catch up with the UK Labour party but to put it in the words of George Galloway we are the same already. Two cheeks of the same arse.
Correction @ 20sec: 'The government is talking about reducing barriers to the FOSSIL gas industry's expansion'
Aust governments, the best lobbying money can buy.
Labor making sure that more independents are elected next year!
Shared thakyou...
How can you get this message into the mainstream? Everyone should be marching on the streets. There is so much wrong with this country and so much wrong with the 2 main parties. The days of political apathy should be over and people need to vote accordingly.
Why is Labor doing this then???
Capitalism
Seems labor think mad max should be more than a movie……wonderful.
"If you believe in climate change." The problem is this belief system.
Hydrocarbons...not fossil fuels.
Labor is gone.
Yep
Not happy
The only way to lower greenhouse gas emissions is to open up new gas fields and new coal mines.....the Albanese government 🤪
"no because science" 😅
Uranium, gas or coal take your pick...solar and wind wont power this country alone...why are electricity bills constantly rising...because renewables are so efficient?
You can't produce most of your electricity from intermittent renewables without sufficient gas backup, which Australia doesn't have and is not investing in. Gas is a transition fuel that is absolutely necessary if you want to rapidly decarbonise.
Gas demand for electricity is declining as renewables are rolled out and increasing. Existing gas supplies are more than enough.
what should we call the right wing of the Labor party currently keeping things LNP? Purples?
Economic blackmail by the fossil fuel industry trumps forward thinking politics again. I don't get it , whatever economic gains, it's electoral poison. But what alternative? Wish the Greens didn't have so much bad stigma and more fiscal credibility.
Nuclear energy would be a good start.
It be good by labour next voting
The Mad King is truly mad (or captured).
One explanation: It all boils down to financial returns, i.e. more gas ducts explored more wealth created hence more taxes for the present Gov..
need to calm down...
Increasing gas extraction does not increase emissions. Users of gas will find an alternative supply, so emissions will remain unchanged, but Australia will miss out on the export revenue, which is currently providing $13B per year, plus tax revues from direct and indirect jobs.
Gas is needed to provide peaking, to firm up intermittent renewables. Without it, supply becomes either unstable, or we are forced to use expensive storage. That is why we need more gas to get to net zero.
"This is not complicated". The Australia Institute are not telling you the truth.
"Increasing gas extraction does not increase emissions." lol as long as its kept in big bottles and never used.
"Gas is needed to provide peaking, to firm up intermittent renewables" Not to 2050 it dont.
This will cost labor votes, and as powerful as the gas lobby is a gov isnt going to throw away an election for them. It makes no sense why this policy is so extreme.
Methane has 4 times the greenhouse pollutant effect of carbon dioxide. If it's out of the ground it is being burned. The whole point is to leave it in the ground and rely on renewable energy.
Grow a brain.
Australia is producing enough gas to supply gas peaking plants. A gas rervarvation policy will divert some gas from being exported.
A new study came out in October and was supposed to be why Biden paused exports; gas is at least 24% worse than coal, up to 225% depending on transport.
@@captainawesome2226 but we can't rely on renewable energy, because it is intermittent (inherently unreliable) ... we need gas for producing "peaking" power when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing. Storage (battery and pumped hydro) is too expensive. That's why Australia and our gas export customers overseas need gas to reduce emissions. Grow a brain.
Bass strait Victoria already had the backside blasted out of it in the early 2000s fisherman lost millions in quota cuts 🦞
