I like her spirit, she loves what she's doing just like the 20s and Waldo Pepper. Good film, Redford and cast. When she and her pilot crashed, it seemed as if she would have been tossed from of the crash, I'll always wonder how she was tied to the wing so that did not occur. She would have still lost her life due to blunt force trauma, but she would have been out of the fire. RIP- Jane, you brought smiles to many people, your courage and showmanship was of the highest order. Thank you
fearless and gorgeous, a lethal combination. I know that I could never do anything like wing walking, maybe a parachute jump but no way would I ever walk on the wing of a plane in the air.
I've done both wingwalking & skydiving as can be seen on my UA-cam channel. Skydiving rocks but wingwalking tops that easily! And yes I have done loops, hammerheads & barrel rolls!
I was actually obsessed with airplanes as a kid and used to volunteer at the Flying Circus in Bealeton Va every Sunday. What happened to Charlie and Jane is kind of immediate and personal in my memory.
wait, how can you tell, they switched the camera so you can't tell the altitude. and it wasn't the altitude it was the angle , as Charlie was heading more off-line into the crowd and toward that parked commercial plane. I think it was a 767 or 777.
I had no idea this was a thing until just now and I am truly amazed! Supposedly wing walkers are only women which I’m even more impressed (although not surprised because women rock) by! Be safe up there! Edit: wow I had no idea this woman, Jane Wicker, passed away. Tragic accident, prayers for her family. RIP
I've done wingwalking as a paying customer. Women are the main performers due to their slender bodies & athleticism. The wingwalk company I use have a weight limit for paying customers which is not to be exceeded. I've done three wingwalks which are all on my UA-cam channel. 2 of which involved loops, hammerhead stall turns ,& barrel rolls.
So soldiers, explorers, war reporters, swat police, etc shouldn't have children? I'd rather have had a parent to live up to that's dead than one who's alive and your average joe or worse.
Young Jane Wicker was engaged to get married. Just getting her life started (with Rock). He was an airline pilot, so she was to be set for life with his big earnings and big bank account , would have allowed her to expand her aircraft holdings. Her plane was destroyed along with her life, ...her airplane was everything to her,, if was her puppy. I know she put a lot into getting it in tip-top shape. She was also well known on the circuit of airshows.
What a sense of Freedom she must have got from doing what she did and at least she passed loving her life! I believe this had to be pilot error when they crashed because he was too low to do a loop like that and come out of it!!
Inverted flying definitely affects the aerodynamics. The wing would be inverted which means instead of gaining lift in the up direction you would be gaining lift in the down direction. This is why you see aircraft compensate for this when flying inverted by raising the nose up slightly. This is much more dramatic on a real aircraft. An RC plane is more like a bug.
Were you there? He definitely was fully inverted, as the video clearly shows. They were too close to the ground….his next maneuver was to roll back upright. That's when the wing clipped the ground.
if yo watch real close, the right tail aileron fails i believe, ive watched this over and over and im pretty sure i see that snap and throw them downward.maybe you can see it too.sad day at the airshow for sure.
He did seem low, but that would not affect the aerodynamics at all. I fly RC planes and flying inverted at 3 ft is the exact same as flying inverted at 30ft, though it does take more nerve and there's no room for error (which is also why it's more fun). The suddenness of the direction change in the crash is either mechanical failure or pilot error, or a physical problem with the pilot. OR he realized he was too low and panicked, though that seems unlikely for an experienced pilot.
The video is still up there, just Google watch?v=ATJyx4jthH8 . The ailerons definetly changed direction and rolled the plane to the ground. I don't know about her marriages, some people said they had been married and she was remarrying soon, that's why I suspected faul play. But I sure wish it was just mechanical failure or some other "non violent" cause, even the pilot suffering a heart attack or something like that would be less sad.
The NTSB says the rudder was in the right rudder position at impact. This is consistent with a right roll from inverted (the right rudder is used to keep the nose up). But because this particular stunt is supposed to be exited with a left roll (the same as the entrance to inverted), then it is only fair to assume that the pilot hesitated during the right roll, when he: (a) became unsure which direction of roll he should use to exit inverted position, or (b) realized he made the wrong roll, which had he completed, would have flung** the wing walker off the wing **Assuming the wing walker was not tethered with a safety chord. Regardless, this particular stunt, by the same pilot/wingwalker team, used left rolls on exit in previous routines.
+Tara Thysell your assumptions are wrong. i knew jane and charlie and i know kirk wicker, her ex husband, and kirk is the best aerobatic stearman pilot ive ever known. He is the one who created this act with jane, that was their plane until they got divorced and then jane took it over.. kirk usually still flew the routine, but she had been flying with some other pilots as well, charlie being one of them. Charlie owned an extra 300 aerobatic plane and he was a VERY good pilot in that plane. Ive seen him put on show after show, doing amazing stunts. Charlie was a master of the extra 300, but in my opinion he was not as good in the stearman. the stearman is much heavier, and this difference lead him to fly too slow, too low, and then he tried to roll out the only way he saw when he realized he was about to stall inverted that close to the ground.
+Tara Thysell charlie had flown the routine before, but he was no where near the expert that kirk is. Jane is tethered to the wing by a rope she hooks her leg through that is tied to the strut so she wasnt in much danger of falling off.. the lack of stearman expertise is key because to fly a wingwalker you want to go as slow as possible to limit the amount of wind . its a fine line between going as slow as you can for jane, while still keeping the airplane flying. you have to know the airplane perfectly. charlie was first off going too slow, he was also a little low, the lack of speed made his roll cost even more altitude, once he was inverted he realized how wrong it looked and he made a quick reaction to roll out of it. an instinctual move consistent with someone who is used to flying a very agile plane like his e300. stearmans roll slow, and that would not be the instincts of a full time stearman pilot.
Thanks for the clarification Rob. I did some more research on this stunt, and from what I read, the speed factor is largely dependent on the speed entering the flyby, which is right after the last turn (180 deg) where Jane is sitting on the left lower wing. Now I also read in the NTSB report, that maintenance crew overheard a discussion between Jane and Charlie earlier in the morning prior to the stunt, where Jane is heard telling Charlie to keep the speed on the turn slow, to keep the wind down. My question is: if speed is limited during the turn prior to the flyby, is the solution to make the turn at a higher altitude, thereby allowing the plane to reach stunt speed, through gravitation, rather than depend on the engine power alone for acceleration?
Tara Thysell yes. kirk usually flys slow, but a little higher, then he dives to gain a little speed and rolls the plane over with a nose up attitude, so when he is coming out of the roll to inverted he is actually gaining a little altitude, and actually letting the power of the plane help hold it in the air a little too. go watch kirk and jane fly the show at the flying circus, the video is on YT. watch for that part of the stunt and note how much better the roll looks. the subtle differences add up to a lot. there are too many to explain, but the basic principal is that he need to have better form on his roll. So sad, charlie was an awesome dude and kicked ass in his other planes. he had a pitts as well. but all of those planes dont require such intense roll inputs. Jane was probably the best wing walker in the world, and what happened was no fault of hers.
She's dead now. I knew it would happen. Whatever happened with that husband/wife wingwalker team? Was that her? I saw a doc on it on youtube a few years ago.
I know this is 7 years old, but if anyone is curious, yes she was a team with her ex at one point. There was another married team, though. Wife also died in a crash, her husband was the pilot. He survived and kept flying. Amanda Franklin
I thought wing stunts on biplanes went out with flagpole sitting and goldfish eating in the 1920's. After this weekend (6/22/13), it might just do that.

he was going slower at point of inversion (Jane's request) so she could do the stunt easier. It was a miscalculation on Charlies part because he wanted to maintain speed but also had to listen to his boss (Jane). And so based on him going slower, he didnt' get back to "runway heading", and thus, was heading slightly toward the crowd, but more alarmingly toward a big jet that was parked off to the right of "runway heading". Charlie planted the plane in the grass to avoid casualties knowing full well Jane would be the first on the receiving end of mother earth, followed by Charlie meeting his demise a few milliseconds later. He was a fantastic PItts pilot, not so much the Boeing Stearman, at least not that day. RIP wicker/schwenker

You are wrong. Their stunt was turning fully inverted go by the spectators waving and then return to right side up. I don't agree with u. I think it depends on what angle u watch. UA-cam blocked your link. from what has been reported, she was never married to Charlie. From the Daily Mail: "Wicker met her now ex-husband Kirk Wicker at a wing-walking audition. Jane and Kirk joined up and they created 'Beauty and the Beast Wing Walking' together. She would walk on the wings while Kirk would fly the plane. When their marriage dissolved in 2002, Wicker took a break from wing walking. The couple had two sons"
