I was taught to snap the spine by hooking a finger into the roof of the mouth and then pressing your thumb down at the base of the head (from the top of the fish and basically between the gills) and then to snap the head upwards by pressing down with your thumb and up with the hooked finger to cleanly and quickly snap the spine. They immediately died and stopped moving upon doing so, but if you're not comfortable with the whole thing since it seems brutal to be doing so with your bare hands then I'd suggest humanly killing the fish with a knife too. 👍

As a vegetarian, I'd eat a fish that was sustainably caught and humanely dispatched.
I used to fish a lot when I were younger, fish can continue breathing for 30 minutes to several hours depending on environment and species. Especially on ice their metabolism drops so they should be able to live on for a bit longer.

In my home country in almost every supermarket there are aquariums with fish. You can choose them yourself and the staff will kill it for you and even clean it if you want. In most supermarkets they use the "head bonking" technique and I remember how once few foreigners were literally screaming and saying that it was animal cruelty..
Well, it actually is animal cruelty

@@sventheg9061 I guess you were one of these foreigners huh
@@照る零 probably not one of these explicit foreigners, but yes, I'm from Europe. But my origin isn't relevant for the question, if it's animal cruelty or not
@@sventheg9061 How is stunning them before quickly dispatching them inhumane? They don't feel a thing while stunned.
as a fish hobbyist who loves my fish I appreciate this. Predation is natural and not inherently cruel, but as humans we have the ability to make it as painless as possible for them.
Based take
But as far as I’m aware, fish don’t have a conscious experience of pain in any real sense. Isn’t the “humane” killing of a fish as nonsensical a concept as the “humane” killing of a tree? What cruelty is there if there’s no experience of cruelty on the receiving end?
@@kita9868 Ultimately concepts like honor and dignity are entirely human and don't really exist in nature, but since they do exist for humans, they will be valued by people, and for some people it is worth preserving these values for animals who have no concept of them. It is humane because humans are empathetic, and would like their own deaths to maintain some semblance of honor and dignity. It's a Golden Rule kinda deal. It's what being human is about, even if it doesn't always make sense on first glance.
@@kita9868 That's the kicker. A lot of our understanding in science is ever changing. It took years for us to acknowledge that animals had any sense of pain at all. We need to keep an open mind that just because they might not feel it like we do, doesn't mean they don't feel something similar, etc. Also, fish have stress responses, we can observe that enough to say that it's probably better not to take chances.
Hell, there are even fledgling studies now that show that plants might have some alternative stimuli reaction equivalent to pain. Need to not fall into human centrist viewpoints because we will never experience what another being goes through anyway. There's always possibilities and shouldn't that be enough to warrant the consideration of doing things humanely rather than find out oh, we've been doing this cruel shit for years when we didn't need to do it that way.
@@kita9868 recent studies have shown fish absolutely do experience pain and distress, which makes the way they're usually treated by the fishing industry (allowed to suffocate) horrific. It makes sense, a lot of fish have the same functional parts mammals do (spinal chord, brain, nerves) so there's no reason they wouldn't. Having kept fish myself it's pretty obvious that they experience some level of discomfort, I've had fish with dropsy where their bodies fill up with fluid and it's clear from the way they move that they're experiencing something negative.

I don't fish anymore, but my family owned a fish farm. If you're going to kill a fish and you choose to bonk them, use a large heavy stick or bat or other long object with a heavy end. It's hard to get the speed and momentum with a rock, and it's hard to get the force required with a little stick. Do a test swing on the ground before you try so you don't end up just making the fish suffer with a bad blow. Also, props for appreciating and thanking the life taken. 👍
Put it in a hard surface like a rock first, that way you can kill it very easily with a surprisingly small amount of force, as a safe bet it’s a good option but there’s always the risk of basically exploding the head and getting brains everywhere on you

If you could make are a follow up vid on locating a fish’s brain it would be helpful as well, many different types of fish. This is something I’ll give a like to-
Most animals are pretty similar, behind the eyes in the middle. Find where the skull plate ends. Once you find Thst hard ridge go to the middle between the eyes and stab. You can twist and jerk the knife around to make sure you mulch the brain. The fish will spasm and it’s eyes will roll once you’ve hit brain. Going from behind the skull plate is often flatter and much thinner than the front of the skull making it easier to punch through. It’s also the location of the hindbrain or a fishes’ equivalent connecting to the brain stem. For animals the living focused important brain bits are in the rear located close to the spinal cord.
99.9% of fish brains are located in the head

@@SecondadmendmentYep, gotta make unaliving each other hard to do like in Palestine.
Modified ikejime - I’ve been doing this for years and more anglers who keep and eat their catch should as well. Fastest, most humane way to get there, and best flavor for your meal.
Thanks for spreading the word!
You got it, Adam! Nothing beats Ike Jime
Where can I find more detailed info on that ?
Interestingly enough, hitting the fish on the head with a rock or stick or specifically made tool (tiny baseball bat) and the either cutting the vessel behind the gills or puncturing the heart is required by law in Germany.
@Andreas Kist is puncturing the brain an acceptable alternative to hitting the fish on the head in Germany?
@@samsadowitz1724 Strangely not, only paralyzing and bleeding out. Only exception are eel and flatfish. Eel are killed by severing their spine right next to the head, there's even a special tool for it. Flatfish don't need to be paralyzed by hitting them on the head.
I don’t know why but seeing you lobotomize that trout made me really feel my own mortality and the fragility of our physical bodies. Mortality is an awesome concept
This is why humans are stupid. Always overthinking everything. Just eat the fish, have lots of babies, die. Thats life. Welcome.
I already knew of the fragility, flesh is weak. Stop thinking you’re invincible in life, you’re always at the mercy of nature
@@Shvetsario Damn okay, thanks for the insight Einstein. They just made a comment on the video, get that pole out of your ass.
Mortality is an awesome concept? You are a strange individual
I know! I’m glad they added mortality in this new update😁
I took my mainland friend fishing on our boat when he came to visit me in Honolulu…as soon as my dad pulled in a 150-lb ahi (yellowfin tuna), I grabbed my bat and struck it’s head two times in rapid succession…my friend yelled at me and told me, “WTF are you doing? That’s inhumane!” So I asked him, “would you rather I let the fish suffocate in our cooler? I’d rather make its death quick, which is what I did…not to mention a 150-lb fish thrashing in our boat could hurt or kill someone!” Yeah, he apologized really fast. LOL.
I remember having a roommate who bred angelfish and german rams, he was damn good at it too, but also ruthless about removing those with birth defects and sickness so they didn't breed and spread their defects.
Man eventually mastered exactly how much force to thump a ram's face with to kill it but not make it's face squish and make a mess. He was the fish assassin.
"the fish assassin" 😭😭😭😭
Bruh wtf lmaoo
Sounds like a German
Experience is often the greatest teacher & the only way to become the infamous "Fish Assassin"

German master fish race
There is a Japanese Method called Ikejime (活き締め) that is very similar to the one shown in the video. Instead of a just the head Bonking, a spike gets inserted quickly and directly into the hindbrain, usually located slightly behind and above the eye. the spike is then spun around which causes immediate brain death, and prevents the fish from reflexing its muscles due to the nerve connections being broken, making the fish retain it’s flavor for weeks
Yep it is the best method. Fishes for sushi
Sounds easier to just use a knife like here tbh
Insert nail then twist? Bound to mess it up
That requires some asian discipline and patience to master it sounds:D
@@1CE. honestly, the precision is probably pretty darn good with some basic anatomical knowledge. In many cases the body marks itself for spots like that, that’s how people do vaccines, using an anatomical bone-marker at your shoulder, cus stabbing right into the deltoid is inaffective and damaging.
@@Techyenaumm injectioms/vaccines are put into the deepest part of the deltoid... Landmarking ensures you miss blood vessels and ensure its in the deepest part of the deltoid. 2 finger rule below the acromium process (shoulder bone).
I'm glad that you were concerned more with the fish not feeling pain or suffering than you were about the quality of the meat, while also explaining how to make good quality fillets WITHOUT making the fish suffer needlessly.
Sticking a blade through the brain would definitely make it stop feeling pain instantly if the blade severed the brain stem. I'm sure that fish would've thanked you for getting it done quick and painlessly, if it was able to.
Conveniently, killing the fish faster and more humanely improves the quality of the meat. Fear and pain trigger the body to release cortisol, which makes the meat tougher and worse tasting. It’s the same from invertebrates to large mammals.
It's a fish 🤡
@@gucknichtso2864 why were people mad when Hitler killed the Jews? They’re just humans 🤡
@@gucknichtso2864 You don’t wanna fall down a path of needlessly causing pain to animals, if you know that you’re killing something humanely it doesn’t effect you (that much) but if you kill something knowing full well that it’s suffering or slowly builds up an insensitivity to killing and you can start to develop symptoms of psychopathy. But that’s just science, clown emojis carry more weight to them don’t they.
@Cloudykook no they don't. You really think those things even think?
