As a person who has a love of much that is vintage, I can't help but find these dolls absolutely charming. They are quite popular with collectors today and can be found adorning Christmas trees. Originally, though, they were crafted as quiet toys for children as far back as the Civil War days. These simple little dolls were made from handkerchiefs for little girls. They were carried to church and were known as "Sunday toys" because they were only to be played with on Sundays. Some mothers would even place sugar cubes in the head for young children to silently suck on during a service.
Materials required: Hanky, small amount of stuffing, rubber band, ribbon, scissors, lace, sewing needle, and thread.

Thank you for the video. My mother is 96 and she had to sell her house. She had vintage hankies from a card and hankie club from 1949. So my sister ask me to see f I could make something out of them. I found your dolls. and made them. They all love them. She had over 50 so I made them for kids and grandkids. They are great. Thanks again

I just watched your "hanky church doll" video for the first time today(jan. 26,2013) and it brought a tear to my eyes. I made two of these dolls 11 yrs. ago while waiting in the hospital for my husband to come out of surgery. Unfortunately he never did and on top of it my two dolls were stolen along with the pattern. Now I am happy to say I can make another one in memory of him thanks to you. I love your website and all the great patterns you have. Thank you.

These dolls are timeless. The story I heard was that since church services were very long moms in colonial times would make a simple doll from knots to amuse a restless child during church.

soooo cute! Ive been looking for an easy doll. I have so many hankies and so much stash. I also have lavendar bushes. May make this a sachet doll but in a way the lavender bag can be removed maybe a tummy pocket. Not in the head.

We found a lot of our vintage hankies at antique malls and flea markets
These were actually made so that if a little girl dropped it on the floor it wouldn’t interrupt preaching. 😇
