Really cool little robot. I've got to say, i find you really fascinating. I have been watching a couple of videos on youtube about you, the way you explain things, and your excitement when doing so really is inspiring. I wish i would've had a teacher like you back in school.

Cliff, it's been 3 years and you still haven't shown us the pallets. I hope you would soon :)

I'm glad I discovered this channel from Numberfile.... but sad that there hasn't been a video on this channel for 3 years.
Edit: see the replies to this comment for the explanation of the makeshift pallets.

I sent him an email asking about it, right after I bought a Klein bottle.

+Joshua Walters Ok this is what he said: #1: Oops - I just looked at that video -- I'd utterly forgotten about it. Short answer: after several years of experimentation, I still do not have a good solution to pallets. I've standardized on several size boxes, and for a while, I glued/taped small boxes to the bottom of the big ones, to act as pallets. Did;'t work well for the heavier boxes. Now I use 2-3cm thick strips of wood, loosely glued to the bottom of the boxes, as a pallet/lifter. (Continued)

+Joshua Walters #2: Turns out that the function of a pallet is not just to give a place for the tines of a forklift to reach. A pallet also keeps the box off the floor (important if the floor is damp or gets wet; a damp floor will destroy corrugated cardboard!).. The pallet commoditizes the packages (forcing a uniform footprint for different sized loads). It also distributes the downward force from the box's contents across floor (and onto the tines of the forklift). Finally, a wooden pallet allows a load of boxes to be dragged or pushed across the floor without damage to the contents, the box, or even the pallet. (This is a real problem for me - often I want to push a box back to the wall, just a few cm ... pasted-on cardboard pallets detach, causing problems. (Continued)

+Joshua Walters #3 My solution of gluing wood to the bottom of each box is OK, but not the best -- I've tried other substances (cardboard, foamed plastic, etc) but they don't work well with sideways pushing/pulling. Sigh - I feel like I do research in the most trivial things...
      Cheers,
      -Cliff
