The History of Womontown, Kansas City's Intentional Lesbian Neighborhood

  • A few days ago, a lesser known part of Kansas City’s queer history was recognized with a new plaque. The ceremony honored Womontown, an intentional lesbian community that thrived in KC’s Longfellow neighborhood in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
    Created by a couple who wanted to “walk hand and hand freely down the street,” Womontown eventually grew to cover 12 blocks of the neighborhood, with over 80 women calling the community home during its peak in the ‘90s.
