At the start of the podcast I was thinking "this is going to be dull, who is this guy" by the end, I feel like I want them to make a movie about him. What an amazing guy and a brilliant story teller
Moreno's nickname on America was "SuperSub" because he was like Hulkenberg to F1. Every team wich has a problem with one of his drivers called Roberto to drive. He won 2 races in CART (then Indycar)
This guy performed one of the most remarkable feats in F1 history . He actually got the Andrea Moda car to qualify for a race - the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix no less.
Roberto is a real fighter, his history is inspirational and full of difficulties. Great guy, sadly here in Brazil, lack of people recognize his career and his determination. I'm very happy for this interview.
This was an absolute peach of a Beyond The Grid. Never stop making these. I love the way Roberto is both laughing and crying at the same time with so much emotion. His stories were brilliant!!
Roberto is one of the "nice guys" in motorsport. If you talk to him, he stops, looks, listens and communicates with you. He's not taking to you because his contract says he has to.
This interview is fantastic. The parts where Roberto gets emotional recalling the crucial moment of his career are true motorsports poetry... He deserved better chances in F1 but even if he had to struggle most of his F1 career with bad cars he always managed to give the best he could do and even more... I believe there are situations where is not the final result the thing that really counts, it's instead the effort and attitude you put pursuing your goals... The mechanics of all the paddock clapping him in the Monaco GP pitlane after he was able to qualify that piece of junk on 4 wheels (the Andrea Moda) to me has the same value of a pole position, Respect and honour to Roberto Moreno.
You guys missed, unfortunately, other, longer podcast participations, in his native Brazilian Portuguese where Roberto told, no details spared, things about the beginning of his career. Like he didn't had money for new tyres for his Kart. He came to the UK to race in Formula Ford 1600, and had absolutely no money, he was scared, Nelson asked a guy who was going to sponsor him, to sponsor Roberto instead. That money was enough to buy a Formula Ford car, and stay for like 4 races. He said "what if this isn't for me?", and Nelson said "Roberto, go to Europe. Someone else is paying, not you, so go there. If all goes wrong, you come back to Brasil speaking English", and off he went. Roberto said he rented a room in a family home, where the landlady said he could only take showers once per week. One day the woman left the house, he went and filled the bathtub and took a month worth of bath. Then later she found out and made him pay. He told several stories about his Formula Ford days, where he LIVED INSIDE RALT's Ron Tauranac shop, and aerodinamically trimmed his car to be faster, how he replaced the stock wheels with others that were thinner, to make the car go faster. This guy is a hero. The Speed Gladiator! The Goliath!
Cadeira Cativa, do canal grande prêmio, apresentado por Flávio Gomes. He spoke for 3 hours and he still has more to say. I don't know if it has english subtitles. Anyway, Moreno is a legend.
He forgot to tell what Piquet said to him when he left Brazil: “if everything went wrong at least you will learn another language”. Only listening his interview we must say: he won in every aspects 👏
Pupo Moreno is probably the most underrated brazilian driver ever. I'm a big fan of him and all the F1 fans should know him. Thanks for this, Formula 1.
Even if you don't care about Formula 1 racing in the slightest, this is an absolutely fascinating tale about a decent & resilient person's encounters with various people - some of whom were honorable and some of whom were not. It's pretty clear that lots of people were trying to use Roberto and were willing to discard him at the first indication that doing so would serve their own interests. The ovation he got from the pitlane mechanics when he *somehow* managed to drag that Andrea Moda onto the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix grid was more than earned.
The best BTG I've ever listened to. Roberto gave a 3-hour interview last year to a Brazilian podcast telling some of these stories and much more... But here he was absolutely emotional about these memories. I guess there was never a driver so passionate about getting a F1 seat like him. It feels bad that such thing is underestimated these days. Probably bc you only have a chance today if you have a ton of money, or if you have a lot of money AND a drivers academy support
What a great guy! As a young Benetton fan back in the day, it was easy to just dismiss Moreno as "the other guy" and as the obvious choice for the boot to make room for the Schumacher kid everyone was raving about. In hindsight, Moreno deserved better, probably long before that short-lived spot in the sun. Still a memorable career, even though often for his herculean feats in some of the most infamous cars to ever (dis)grace a F1 track. And a very nice guy all around! It'd be easy to be bitter, instead he sounds genuinely grateful and moved even about parts of his career he'd have the right to feel resentful about. I'd love to hear more about his time with all those minnows! And about his renaissance in CART!
There's an excelent story about Camber, the shop where Piquet, Ribeiro and Moreno worked: They're out of money and near to close the doors, and at the weekend there will going to have a race, but they didn't have a car to race. So a lady (edit: was Ribeiro's mother) on friday left her car for maintance, and the guys took this car without her knowing, put competition brakes and engine, Nelson raced and won! The prize saved the shop and their jobs. On sunday they returned the car to the lady, but there was one problem: The guys forgot to remove the license plate before the race, and the local newspapper covered the event and took a photo from the winning car. The lady returned to the shop and asked: _Nelson, did you raced with my car?
As someone who's done a fair few interviews myself for smalltime local media, people like Roberto are just an absolute treat. Those times where you can just ask a handful of guiding questions and let someone tell their story with such passion are some of the best days of work I've ever had. What an amazing animated storyteller, and he really gives off vibes of just being an amazing guy in general.
Definitely! At a minimum I want to know more about the collapse of Andrea Moda (they led Andrea Sassetti away in handcuffs at Spa!) and his season with Forti.
This was one of THE best BTG's I've heard. I was just too young to appreciate drivers like Roberto, helping teams on a shoestring budget. Of course, states side I watched his American career as a young boy, but never knew his voracity back then. Great man, great podcast.
Ahhhhh. Why did you cut the Andrea Moda 92 part short? We learned so much that was new there? Wanted to hear about his whole season. And what about Forti in 1995? Completely missed out
The only downside of this interview was that Moreno had so many great stories to tell there simply wasn't time to discuss the collapse of the Andrea Moda team and his season with Forti. This episode begs for a "Part 2"!
Wow great interview Tom! The passion with which Roberto tells these stories is remarkable. It also seems he hasn't talked about it a lot from the sounds of him becoming emotional multiple times while reliving it. Best interview on Beyond the grid yet! Keep them coming!
Wow, for me the best Beyond The Grid. This is the real F1 we all want to see again. When a driver with talent and huge determination will bring to the grid, without necessity to have a rich family supporting it.
This is a stunning episode. Moreno is a superb driver and so full of passion. I love all the backmarker stories and this is one where he was able to get his day to shine when he was allowed to have it. Thank you Pupo and BTG.
Amazing episode. A close second to my favorite Episode which is that of Alex Zanardi. Roberto truly wore his heart on his sleeves. Shows you that victories are not all made on the track but on a personal level. Would be interesting to have an episode with Briatore, Jordan and the drivers who drove for them before Schumacher was drafted in all guesting together. That would be mega!
If the guys who made the SENNA film are looking for another one to do, they need to listen to this. And if the FIA or F1 want to grant a lifetime Paddock Pass to one driver who isn't a World Champion, it should be to this man.
