  • Awa dancing is a form of folk dancing, specifically Bon dancing, from Tokushima, Japan. Awa is an old name for Tokushima. Awa dancing (Awa odori, in Japanese) is popular throughout Japan, and there is a huge Bon Awa dancing festival every August that draws 1.3 million tourists to Tokushima. Awa dancing by professional groups is deceptively simple, requiring many, many hours of rehearsal to coordinate such complexity, even though the basic Awa dancing step is quite simple. Gojahei is one of the largest, most famous, and most unique Awa dancing troupes, vitally and effectively incorporating a broad range of ages and dancing styles.

Great video. I have seen videos recently from Tokushima of this particular ren at the Hana Haru festival in April of whom I follow from afar! I also follow Kikusui. You get the chance to watch them practice also which is cool! I am sure you will be attending the big event in August! I have a question for you. Since you are in Tokushima will you apply to take part in the Arasowa-ren on the 14th August?
    Thanks for the upload 😊

I am really glad you liked the video! I also followed Awa dancing from afar for many years before I landed a job here in Tokushima.
I will certainly be attending the August festival, as long as there are no surprising developments. However, I am not sure I can participate. I work evenings and Saturdays, which means that I cannot attend practices of Arasowa-ren or any other dancing troupe that I know of. I have heard of a troupe where you can practice on your own with videos and then dance with others in the festival. So if that is true, that is what I might do. And I am also participating in the informal, non-performing group Shin Arasowa-ren. I might also follow my co-worker's troupe throughout the festival experience for a day and post a documentary of it on UA-cam. She and her daughter belong to Yakko-ren, and they will be participating in the August festival.
Feel free to follow my channel! I upload just as often as my busy schedule and my budget allow. I really love Awaodori!!

I watched last years event live via a streaming service and was disappointed the last day was a washout due to a Typhoon! I will be taking time off to watch this year's 😊! I am hoping to attend the Hana Haru next year. I shall look forward to your next uploads with bated breath, thank you again! It is nice to talk to someone who likes this!
