- In a quirky tradition for every new House of Commons Speaker, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre playfully dragged Greg Fergus to the podium to make his first remarks in the role. He's the first Black person to ever hold the role in the country.

Clearly you don't know how parliament works. The speaker is separate from government. The speaker admitted he made a horrible mistake, took responsibility for it - and resigned! Conservatives want to increase the pain to Canada from the incident - for partisan gain. Totally reprehensible!

I think to understand you'd have to view that comment from a historical point of view. Remember, there are still Canadians alive who were there when black people (and people of colour) were completely unable to attain these positions. Only in 2023 is he the first, so for many Canadians it's a meaningful event. Just sharing a different perspective than what you may know. have a great weekend.

If that happened, government would be grinded to a halt, a shut down of government would occur and thousands of essential workers may not get paid, maybe for weeks or months till new elections finalize. That would be catastrophic for many.

Context for this tradition: In the British Parliament of the past(which Canada uses as framework for it's own parliament), the Speaker was considered the most dangerous position to hold as they spoke directly to the king and could get executed for bringing bad news. Speakers had to be dragged into their office by other parliament members because of this.
