32:16 What they seem to be missing is that if Helio beats the other open teams and earns a qualifying spot, then he doesn't have to use the provisional. There is no 41st spot, and the team does still get points and prize money. So they still have stakes in qualifying. They still have to work hard to qualify without the exemption so they can get paid. Also yeah, it's more about selling sponsorships and making guarantees than anything else. A sponsor doesn't want to hear "trust me, this guy is good enough to get in." They want to hear "we have a guaranteed spot in the race." That's why they made the charters in the first place.
As a Lions fan, I appreciate your retrospective, Dale. As much as it sucks to finally get so close only to lose it all, it is absolutely worth appreciating every moment we had. Almost every member of my family, even those that normally don’t watch football, was so excited to see how they’d do.
Dude. Yes. I waited almost 40 years for a season like this. Sucked so much to watch it end like that, but was also the best season ever, bittersweet for sure.
Do away with the waivers, do away with the playoffs, whoever accumulates the most points is the champion. Make the clash for pole winners only. Give points for qualifying and that will help make qualifying important. Problem solved.
I do enjoy Junebug rattling off football conversation with TJ as it was an unusual situation that their fav teams both went out in the playoffs...Seems like a lot of discussions will be had about all kind of topics plus racing in detail of course... Gonna be a good year + Daytona Baby coming up soon 🙌 🏁 🥃 M. In Miami : )

I think there are two keys to the exemption provisional. 1) It's exclusive to a driver from another series. This is all about bringing non-NASCAR fans to NASCAR. 2) It's not taking one of the four open spots from the other non-chartered teams. It's a fifth open spot, and they're the only one that can take it. Honestly, I'd like to see them approve up to three of those exemptions. Worst case all three use the exemption and you have an old school 43 car field.
If you ran the Clash this year with only pole winners you’d have a 15 car field. Still almost half the regular field but not too many cars. Sounds about perfect actually.
In my opinion I really like the playoff idea in THEORY but NASCAR just needs to make 2 tweaks to make it really exciting and WAY more fair: 1) Get rid of the "win and you're in". Its a dumb idea that without it would have gotten rid of pretty much every controversial playoff entry last year. 2) Make the playoffs a 4 - 3 - 3 race system. 16 drivers to start. First 4 races, and then eliminate the worst 8 on points. 8 drivers left and another three races. Now we have the 3 final races with the remaining 4 drivers. No one race will determine the winner, and everyone got there on points, not just winning one or two races at an opportune time. No gimiky one race to determine the champion BS.
They should definitely keep going to bowman an aliot of other small town small tracks especially tracks that deep in the history of nascar i am so excited for the clash this yr an pretty sure alot of fans are i think if they can get the number of cars dialed in it could be amazing races
Thanks! Was just about to share a timestamp for others as well! I'm Canadian and so Football is not in my intrests (hockey is my other sport) so I found it interesting they didn't time-stamp this.
I might be ole skool looking at big business and the health and safety of the drivers ( protecting the drivers from themselves ) how many times did a driver start a race then at the first caution switch to the relief driver ( Mike Skinner jumping the 3 after they pulled senior out of the car.. broken leg ribs arm whatever ) I see the medical waiver
I remember when Junior got those bad burns and was out for a few races he still was in the car for the first few laps and then come in for driver change just so they could get the points for that race.
The waiver is specifically incase a driver misses a race. The rules require a driver to run all races to be in the playoffs. If they miss a race, they would apply for a waiver to still be eligible. The waiver is not intended to make sure the stars make the playoffs. The reason the rule is in place to run all races is to prevent a "ringer" from running one race and winning, making him playoff eligible. Example,,, SVG, 2 years ago won Chicago. If not for the rule, he could have been in the playoffs.
No team has ever won 3 Super Bowls in a row, however, one team has won 3 straight NFL championships in a row on two different occasions. The Green Bay Packers won 3 three straight from 1929-1931 and then did it again from 1965-1967. GB’s 2nd 3 peat was an NFL championship and the first two Super Bowls.
what's annoying to me about playoff eligibility and waivers is that if you have enough points to get in despite missing races, you still need a waiver to be eligible. It would be a lot easier for NASCAR to say "no waiver" for a situation like Kyle Larson or a suspension, if missing races only meant your wins don't count to lock in the playoffs. If you miss races for whatever reason but still have enough points to be in, why should you be arbitrarily excluded? As Dale mentioned, these guys aren't going to just skip races because they feel like it even if they could.
I agree that the waivers have gotten out of control, but from someone who had his career cut short because of multiple concussions, I thought you for one would understand why the waivers exist in the first place. Drivers were climbing into cars to race when they were not physically able, but had to at least start the race to get credited for the points. Trying to make it to the first caution to make a driver swap and hoping that you weren't involved in the first caution risking further injury. Davey driving with a special cast, Ricky driving with his eyes taped opened, Dale Sr. driving with a broken sternum shows how tough that generation of racer was but as a PRN article from 2019 writes, "These days, NASCAR wouldn't allow a seriously injured driver to race and that's a good thing". I believe many drivers today would still compete when injured if the waiver didn't exist but since NASCAR stepped in to determine if a driver was fit to drive, it was in the best interest of the sport to offer a medical exemption. I agree with the change in waivers policy and even though I like Kyle Larson, he'll have to think twice if it rains at Indy again this year.
Helio has to race in the ARCA Race 1st before he can enter the Clash, which he is doing. Then, based on where they finish in the Clash, that I believe determines if he can qualify under the Provisional. I agree, Dale, it is confusing. It will be interesting to see if Helio can make it in with all the other regular Stock Car Drivers who are attempting to make the Daytona 500.
The only good I see in the Waiver is keeping injured drivers out of the car. Race car drivers are known for driving injured eyes taped open hands taped to the wheel too the shifter ect ect other than that it isn't needed
Until they come with a schedule that changes the championship race every year I don't see anybody but a Penske, Chastain, or Larson winning the championship.
I have a question that I've never heard anyone ask. Like most people, Im a die hard true blue fan of Mr Earnhardt and his son, who turned into a man that his father would be immensely proud of, as are so many others. An incredible role model. With that said, my question is about Tim Richmond. If Tim Richmond had not died and continued to race, how much of a threat would he have been to Dale? Of all the drivers until his death, Tim Richmond was the only driver who seemed to be a concern to Dale. Just curious if anyone else ever wondered what if?
First off: Dale Jr - Washington getting to the NFC championship game with a rookie QB on year 1 of a rebuild doesn't usually happen... If Washington builds that offensive unit around him, and bolster that defense, they're going to win a few Super Bowls TJ - If there was a year that Buffalo could've taken down Mahomes, thus was it... KC's defense is Swiss cheese since the secondary and defense started rebuilding this season. The problem is, the Bills gave up midway through the 4th quarter when they were up by 1 The Clash - NASCAR kept the SAFER barriers from the LA Collesium and are reusing them. These are new temporary ones that NASCAR can take to tracks that host one-off races (Primarily short tracks)
I personally don't see a problem with how the starting grid is set for The Clash. I'm going to watch it closer including the heats on February 1st but my understanding is your qualifying times determine which heat you run, the top how many ever are your transfers, the next how many ever run for a transfer in the B Main, and then you have your provisionals. Works for dirt racing.
16:28 re: injury waiver; if I have a head injury I might not be willing to sit out despite my health just in case I don't make play offs. I need points.
@jimmirogers3485 That's only if the team knows about it. You could go back to the old days when guys would get head injuries but they wouldn't tell anyone about it.
Hey Dale and TJ am I correct in thinking that it was TJ who designed alot of your car paint scheme's in both Iracing and on some of your cars in Nascar and that is how you guys first got to know each other was either through Iracing or threw his designs? I'm sure I've heard that sometime way back.
The waiver was put into place to keep a team from putting a ringer in a car and winning 1 race and getting into the playoffs. That is why it is needed because they wrote the rule as the driver must run all races. It all comes down to the win and you're in BS they started.
There is no rule against putting a ringer in the car to win your way into the playoffs. The detail you're missing is that win only gets the CAR into the OWNERS playoffs. The driver doesn't get any points for a race they aren't in. But if you look at the truck series playoffs last year, Spire got a truck in the owners playoffs because Busch ran a couple races for them and got a win and Niece got one in doing the same with Chastain. If SVG had won one if the road courses last year while running the 16 for Kaulig, it would have locked that car into the owners playoffs.
Without the waiver Larson isn’t allowed in the playoffs last year. Per the charter rules “have to run every race” Now they’ve changed it so you can get in the playoffs but you’d lose all playoff points to that point
Imagine being a GreenBay fan and watching the entire NFC north division choke in the first games! This was not the way we wanted it to end. I definitely rooted for the Bills too. I can't stand the KC Swifts
The Lions only choked because of so many injuries. The Vikings were overrated to begin with and gb has issues with Jordan being consistent and Matt with discipline and play calling
I was totally thinking the Bills were going to win and was biting my nails I am sick of the Chiefs Swiftie it's getting out of hand But the Bills were good and I surely was cheering for them. 😮
@CandaceBentley I understand completely about Kansas City. I'm not a fan of either team But I would be happy If there was somebody other than Kansas City and Taylor Swift in the super bowl. Josh isn't as good as pat is and The bills are not as good as Kansas City overall. The bills made too many mistakes but at least made it competitive.
They put the 41st spot in, to get viewers from other racing series to watch a NASCAR race, in hopes of gaining more race fans. If some unknown qualifies his way in, how many new viewers are going to watch the race because of him getting in? Zero. But if max Verstapin gets in, you're going to have a ton of new viewers watching the race. It's about growing the sport and as always, it's about the money.
It’s fine to pay attention to money- that’s essential. The problem is that nascorp’s priority is NOT racing- it’s everything else. If their priority was racing they wouldn’t be doing make believe things to manufacture drama and other reality tv elements. It’s just intellectually insulting.
@fishhuntadventure NASCAR doesn't make money from racing. They make money from spectacle. People that like racing go to their local short track. People that like spectacle watch NASCAR on tv. It's basically WWE on wheels. They don't care about the legitimacy of the competition because that doesn't make them money.
Why can't the tow trucks carry tires? Instead of take a bunch of time hooking a car up and towing it back to the pits, they could just put used tires on the car. When the car gets back to the pits, take those tires off and give them back to Nascar. It would save a ton of time and keep the car from going multiple laps down. keeping more cars on the lead lap or one lap down. It would keep the car from getting damage from being towed. It would make for better racing and keep things more competitive (better for everyone).
Dale, why in the hell did you have Rick Ware in studio and not do a full episode with him..?? I'd love to listen to his full story of being a joke of a team to actually having some horsepower behind him. Also, having TJ on the show... good move!
Sure, if you have sold a full season of sponsorship. You could see a small team like Rick Ware that struggles to get sponsors skipping something like the west coast swing which is very expensive and doesn't pay as well as the bigger races if they can't find sponsors.
You don't need any waivers. Change the points system back where you start point in Daytona and finish wherever the last race is and who ever has the most points at the end of the year. He's the champion for the year. Like it used to be. There shouldn't be any playoff races. I'm also the guy that don't watch anymore because of a horrible accident back in the day and all the stupid rule changes.
I feel you on disappointment in the NFL. I'm in Titan Country 😢 . Also what about putting a healthy purse on The Clash podium to get teams more excited.
Jr. team was definitely lucky to even make it to the playoffs but the Bills got Screwed. I’m a Bucs fan so I’m super bitter about the “ no name team” beating the Bucs. I wouldn’t be as bitter if Bucs got beat by the REDSKINS.
I had a consulting gig in NC between 2012-2016 I went to Bowman Gray 4 times over that period, as far as entertainment it is great. As far as racing goes it is the worst tracks I have ever been to.
Having TJ on the show is a win all around.
having tj on the show (permanently) is so refreshing
32:16 What they seem to be missing is that if Helio beats the other open teams and earns a qualifying spot, then he doesn't have to use the provisional. The Broncos fired John Fox when he couldnt get it done with Manning. Bills should consider it.
If Helio makes the show and doesn't need a provisional then NASCAR should add 2 cars that have to race in into the field
If he doesn't need the provisional it's only going to be 40 cars
@@johnhaas2523
That’s revealing of Nascorp’s decline into its poor understanding of race fans and forgetting that racing is first.
@fishhuntadventure hahaha. NASCAR has to be in the entertainment business because that's where the money is aka tv
@fishhuntadventure yeah 41 cars would be a better show than 40
Field for 500 should be 43…would encourage more and more up and coming teams to field an entry along

to the pits, take those tires off and give them back to Nascar. It would save a ton of time and keep the car from going multiple laps down. keeping more cars on the lead lap or one lap down. It would keep the car from getting damage from being towed. It would make for better racing and keep things more competitive (better for everyone).
Clown
Dale, why in the hell did you have Rick Ware in studio and not do a full episode with him..?? I'd love to listen to his full story of being a joke of a team to actually having some horsepower behind him. Also, having TJ on the show... good move!
Sponsership would never let a car take a race off!
Sure, if you have sold a full season of sponsorship. You could see a small team like Rick Ware that struggles to get sponsors skipping something like the west coast swing which is very expensive and doesn't pay as well as the bigger races if they can't find sponsors.
Tj n dale sounds like some Saturday morning television
Bet every penny you have on kc. They won't let swift lose. I freaking guarantee you that kc gets the win.
Hi Dale 😊
Southern folks deal in Common sense..Nascar has begun to show less and less over the last 10yrs from a southerner’s point of view.
They went to bowman gray and they cars got to 2nd gear
Start with the o and d line. They need a great coaching presence.
Money's on the travelers team! Let's get this thing cranking....
I was a Bills fan when it was 4 Superbowl in a row....but Maple Leafs are 57 years since last Cup.
I wish DW and Jimmy Spencer had a podcast together Wouldn’t that be something.😄
Kyle Larson. Champ. Nuff said
I hope it is Tuesday.😊
I like tj here
Back to not liking production team talking. It feels confusing to see flow of show change
white shirt was 60 iq in this ep
You don't need any waivers. Change the points system back where you start point in Daytona and finish wherever the last race is and who ever has the most points at the end of the year. He's the champion for the year. Like it used to be. There shouldn't be any playoff races. I'm also the guy that don't watch anymore because of a horrible accident back in the day and all the stupid rule changes.
It’s because of the rule of having to compete in every race
Why is Travis on this? Not a fan.
I hope Dale can get Jayden on the Download this year 🙏🙏🙏
Awesome…I raced against Dale and TJ on NASCAR Racing on Hawaii/ TEN testing NASCAR Racing 4. I ran the largest league called OSCAR on TEN.
I feel you on disappointment in the NFL. I'm in Titan Country 😢 . Also what about putting a healthy purse on The Clash podium to get teams more excited.
Where do they place their bets? I can’t find the team bets on any of the major better apps
welcome to what the Bengals fans have gone through for many many years
That is why I switched teams to Texans a few years ago
The Bills
So no suspensions, just HUGE fines
producer rolling in hot…lighten up, Francis.
Wavering is utterly ridiculous. You either race or you don't. It is called competition for a reason.
Sorry Jr. I am an Eagles fan. Dont hate. I cried when you won Texas. My boys thought i was nuts or drunk. I was just so happy for you. God Bless.
Jr. team was definitely lucky to even make it to the playoffs but the Bills got Screwed.
