I found this online for watching and I am so glad that I found your channel and I watched this review because this movie was fucking AMAZING! It has got to be my new favorite vampire movie. Definitely in the top ten alien and zombie movies too. Holy fuck. It's just so much of a rush. There were scenes in this movie that were exhilarating. The end ramps it up so much. I love this movie. I saw this movie in the theaters when I was very young. I bought a ticket to a different movie and snuck in to this. It was absolutely marvelous for a pubescent boy.
Lifeforce is a criminally underrated movie. Although based on Colin Wilson's book, it's basically a Quatermass movie. In fact, all you'd need to do is made Frank Finlay's character the hero, and rename him Bernard Quatermass. Check out Quatermass and the Pit (a.k.a. Five Million Years to Earth in the United States) for many, many similarities.
SpyroJance I saw Five Million Years to Earth as part of a double feature with Planet of the Apes back in 1968. I was much more impressed with the Quatermass picture. It shows what you can do with a small budget if you do it right. (except for the marching grasshopper Martians) You're right. Lifeforce reminded me of a Quatermass movie but the poor pacing and focus really disappointed me. Steve Railsback has the charisma of a rock.
You're spot on. "Quatermass and the Pit"/"Five Million Years to Earth," one of the best of all time. (Even the cheesy marching grasshoppers don't diminish the terror, the build-up to which is tremendous.) Awesome movie!
The movie could have been told from Finlay's character's perspective and it might have been much better, given Finlay's on-screen charisma, something the main character lacks.
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING!, it's very, VERY quatermass and i love it, especially with the Astronaut returning to earth and the finale of a supernatural alien force destroying london and turning the people into monsters of some kind, also came off (ironically considering your profile pic) like a R-rated Doctor who story without the doctor at times.
Mathilda May's character is, indeed, credited as 'Space Girl'. In regard to her performance, I was always struck by (you know, beyond the obvious, of course) her poise, as nearly 80% of her screen time, she is full-on nude. She really does come across as some sort of creature for whom, this naked human female form, is nothing more than a tool to be used for conquest, just a costume to wear, and the creature wears it with total indifference. Mathilda May played that seductive yet mechanical indifference perfectly.
Well said, Keith Thorpe! I so agree with you about Mathilda May's otherwordly embodiment of the "Space Girl" alien. This was Ms. May's first movie role, and she was only 20 years old at the time. The hypnotic pull that she casts is remarkable for someone so young. By that, I mean, like you, that even if there was no full-frontal or backside nudity, her performance would still have this effect. The space girl isn't a vacant "zombie queen," but is devastatingly deadly in her objectives. Mathilda May makes this entirely convincing. And she consistently maintains that frightening, mesmerizing aura throughout the entire movie. It's a performance which, mostly wordless, in fact requires self-discipline and control, and which saves her role from falling victim to camp -- even as most of the rest of the movie does. Without Ms. May, this film would have no compelling power; indeed, no "life force." (And, no, I don't mean just because of her nudity, you guys!) She carries this entire movie, and is the main reason why it is so uniquely memorable to many viewers. Had Ms. May's performance been anything less, it would have been uproariously bad. Of course, eyes would have no shortage of pleasure in seeing her body. But, then, that's the kicker. May's performance seems all the more alluring and exotic precisely owing to her captivating hold, as an actress, over not just the other characters, but over we, the viewers, as well. And why does no one mention the lighting on her body? It accentuates her dream-like physical beauty all the more. There, too, the choice not to apply excessive makeup on Ms. May was smart: the very purity of her appearance, of her face and body, creates the utterly compelling effect of simultaneous, helpless attraction and fear in those who look upon her. The truth is that a femme fatale, be she human or alien, casts the same devastating delirium. As most male viewers would attest, they would happily go to their doom in the embrace of the "Space Girl." (And where the opposite is also true. For those who've seen Frank Langella, as Count Dracula, in the 1979 movie "Dracula," you would know that female viewers would just as enthusiastically say the same of Langella's performance. In that role, he perfectly personifies many a woman's fantasy of a Count Dracula.) In another YT video, Ms. May expresses that she was treated kindly, courteously, and with classiness and sensitivity by the main actors and director Tobe Hooper; and that they, considerably older than she, were gentlemanly toward her. In that same video, she is genuinely effusive about the serious career accolades of some of her co-stars (such as Frank Finlay, but whose thespian chops, I must admit, he seems to have ditched in this movie, having failed to find a fitting middle-ground). At the same time, it's terrible to hear, in the interview, that, once she arrived in London, she was suddenly told she would be required to be nude in the movie. She was only 20 years old, by herself, couldn't speak English, there to be in her first movie! She was kept in the dark until that moment (including by her agent, who was female!); so she was completely broad-sided and, obviously, shocked and upset by it, if not panicked. That was sooo wrong, manipulative, and cruel at thing to do. But, as she herself says in the interview, had she been told this ahead of time, she may have refused to be in the movie; and where the filmmakers knew she was the one for the part, not least of which for her discipline of the body, as a ballet dancer. Still, for such a young woman, who'd never been in front of a film camera before, how incredibly uncomfortable it must have been for her -- with a whole crew of men only a few feet from her during filming. That she appears, on screen, as composed and poised as she does (seeing that alien vampire queens are, of course, supposed to be -- sarcasm), is truly remarkable under those circumstances. It also suggests how professional she was. That's truly impressive. Also, as Ms. May herself says, ballet had trained her to use the body as a "work instrument" of creative expression, but not as an object of titillation. But even for those who are entirely comfortable with their body, as professional dancers are, it's quite another thing for a very young woman to be completely nude or partially nude, in all of her scenes, in front of so many men. It makes me wonder if there were any women on the crew during actual shooting; any who reassured her, looked after her well-being, even befriended her, to offset her sense of loneliness in a country whose language she hadn't yet learned to speak. (But which, by the end of the months-long shoot, she did learn: a smart young woman who had a highly attuned ear to the classically trained British actors in the movie, whose command of English she was attentive to.) Nonetheless, was there at least a French-language translator on set? If she didn't have any of those supports, whose failure was that? Obviously, the movie was made in a less 'enlightened' period than now on these matters, but which is hardly an excuse. It doesn't sound like those supports were there for her. Indeed, it seems she was pretty much dropped off in London, and left to fend for herself, all alone. Apparently, by her descriptions, it sounds like the crew was good to her. I certainly hope that was true, and that the experience of making the movie didn't traumatize her in any lasting way. Despite the working conditions (and the discomfort she naturally feels when some of the movie's obsessive male fans talk to her), she speaks well of the movie. That says a lot about her as a person and as a professional actor. Although I wish it didn't matter to say so, I am a heterosexual female. It's also why, what started out as a very short response-comment, is unintentionally turning out to be so long! Part of the reason is because, sadly, I've not come across (self-identified) heterosexual female viewers who love this crazy movie as much as its (obviously, heterosexual) male fans do. And for much of the same reason: Ms. May's incredibly captivating, entrancing beauty. But more important, to me, is the quality of her subtle yet entirely convincing, magnetic performance that makes it what it is. (For the males out there who don't know this, many heterosexual women are naturally at ease with openly expressing their appreciation of another woman's physical beauty. Usually, there is no sexual charge in a straight woman's enjoyment of looking upon, and admiring, the beauty of another woman. But where there is such a sexual attraction, most women who feel it don't make a public display of it. The most psychologically and sexually secure heterosexual women have no shame about such a sexual attraction to one of their own; they simply have the good taste not to make a public show of it. On this point, however, I can't speak for gay women. or any other gender-identity experience. Nevertheless, this is one of the many benefits of being a woman, and in women who are comfortable with their sexuality and erotic freedom.) Undoubtedly, the fact that Ms. May is European (specifically, French) has a great deal to do with how attractive she is in this movie. Most U.S. American women do not have the effortless quality of feminine "je ne sais quoi" which Ms. May exudes in this film -- what one might describe as an air of ephemeral allure. In interviews, Ms. May personifies this attribute, as do many of her European sisters. Or, at least, those of her generation do/did, as did those in prior generations. By comparison, instead of being classy or having real, original/imaginative style, it's crassness and glibness, in recent generations in the U.S., which overwhelmingly prevail in the culture. It's an ugliness that seems to have infected much of the world -- perhaps analogous to what the "alien vampire queen" does in this movie. I find it to be unattractive in both sexes and in all genders. And, in women in particular, is anything but attractive or feminine. But that's just my own, very subjective opinion.) So, as an open thought: Thank you, Mathilda May, for being such a brave young woman to take on this role. Your performance is the only one of its kind, in a movie of this genre, and is a lasting memory for many of us. It is a performance that is completely captivating, something uniquely special -- and in ways far more than just one. [This role doesn't solely define Ms. May, or her career. After this movie, she went on to do more seriously engaging roles as an actress. I just wish most of this movie's fans didn't exclusively, sexually objectify her, in real life. Regrettably, this is inevitable for physically attractive women, and especially those, indeed, in the public eye. Still, it's a terribly crude and invasive feeling for a woman. It's something akin to visual rape. I cringe to think what Ms. May feels when a tactless fan of this movie approaches her. Obviously, males are biologically hard-wired to stare at women whom they find physically attractive. This is natural and, in healthy men who respect women, such robust desire is welcome! And there are few women who don't want their beauty -- be it external and/or internal -- to be appreciated and desirable. But the difference is that it's the tyranny of "the (degrading) male gaze" which repels most women, something they neither welcome nor like. Unfortunately, far too many grown males remain stuck in perpetual adolescence, and have no notion of what it is to be a man who can express his sexual attraction toward a woman in a classy or genuinely witty or imaginative, sincere way which does not debase or degrade her innate dignity as a human being and as a woman. (Hint, hint, guys: that's a quality of virile, considerate, even sensitized finesse in a man -- versus a dumb pick-up line, or other transparently cynical 'strategy' -- which most women find immensely attractive. ;))]

Yet money has a compelling way of reconfiguring, or 'massaging', one's choices -- depending on which sex has the freedom of money. But, at essence, yeah... how many men wouldn't give their lives for just one mind-blowing f*** of the millennium with the (projected image of) Mathilda May's bat queen. The movie's title is, after all, "Life Force." At the same time, and this is what I love about this (or any good horror/sci-fi) movie, were the human race ruled only by their stark-raving gonads and/or homicidal impulses, our species would have little claim to survival over time, much less to any enduring humanity. A planet riddled with sex-addict/homicidal zombies/vampires isn't quite the best playground to be in. He didn't need to because Toby Hooper did a fantastic job... infact, so good you couldn't tell until you read the credits 20 years later ...this is part of the john carpenter apocalypse quad trilogy 😂 such a great fucking movie its like return of the living dead, they live and from beyond had a love child

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Back in the day, I watched Lifeforce at a theatre in Denver, Colorado USA then drove 15 miles to another theatre and watched Back to the Future. They were very different, but both were enjoyable and still remain favorites. In hindsight, I wish I'd watched Lifeforce twice. I've seen it many times on video but only once on the big screen. As a young man, I had a massive crush on Matilda May, and when she spoke to Carlson, " I took my shape from your mind. I took your language. I became the woman I found there, in your deepest thoughts, your deepest... needs. I am the feminine in your mind, Carlson." I felt struck by lightning as if she were speaking to me. Her voice and the swirl in her eyes, that really fascinated me, even though I knew it was probably all special effects magic... still it was a fun time. I had a poster of a close-up of her eyes on my wall for many years. When I listen to the lines again here, there is still that electric tingle in my neck, and I feel like a young man. Thanks for the refreshed memories.

I love Lifeforce!!! It's like the best parts of a season of a sci-fi anthology series trimmed down and thrown into one package. So if you don't like the first 15 minutes, just wait and the next 15 minutes will be something new! So fun.
I still find it hard to believe that someone as beautiful as her could hardly speak any English during filming; didn't need to say much, I suppose to have such an effect on the movie
Life force deeply moved me spiritually as a film and it is only second to " The Dead Zone " in that regard. What struck me was the theme that we are energy and we are spirit. When you focus on this idea while watching the film then the deeper meaning of it will reach you. I don't find any part of Life force as cheesey or silly. The intensity of it stays with you but you must concentrate as there is so much going on I hope you all enjoy this great flick as much as I do and thanks to the Creator of this video. Excellent job!
I have nothing but love for this film, even though this is actually the FIRST time its been properly explained to me. I had NO IDEA what was going on when my cousin took me to see it when I was 13. We saw it in a grand dilapidated movie palace in some ghetto in Newark, New Jersey. My first time seeing nudity on screen, and I was blown away by the special effects. I remember it was a triple feature- Blade Runner Directors Cut/Sharkey's Machine/LifeForce.
In 2015, Steve Railsback was at the Hollwood Show where many fans had him signing LIfeForce items. Every 20 minutes he would scream out at the top of this lungs. I wondered if he was going crazy. Then I realized that he was re-creating his Carlson yell that you see near the end of this video.
That main theme is just excellent. As for the movie itself, I only ever saw part of it on TV when I was younger, and I barely remember anything about it. Will have to buy the Blu Ray and change that. Great retrospective Oliver.
This is a movie I wouldn't mind seeing a remake off. Space vampires is an awesome concept but the movie could've used a few rewrites to really iron out the kinks and extend more on the creatures. And with today's pratical effects and CGI, I think it could look phenomenal.
I loved this film. It had a lot to do with the fact I had seen Steven Railsback as Charles Manson in the telepic "Helter Skelter" based on the true life events of the Tate/LaBianca killings of 1969. The funny part of it all was, I hadn't remembered that Patrick Stewart was in this until I'd seen him as Gurney Halick from David Lynch's "Dune". I remember an interview with Patrick for "Star Trek: The Next Generation" where he played Jean Luc Picard, and the interviewer asked him if he was into science fiction before playing the part of Picard. Stewart said he'd done "Dune" but then "kissed Charles Manson in a film...." His funny throwback to having done "Lifeforce". Thanks for this review. I have to see if I can get ahold of a copy of this film. Hopefully the original cut. I also loved Mancini's march music. One of my favourite main title pieces. Thanks for a great retrospective.
I'm glad to see this movie achieving cult status. It's fun to think of it as a gender-reversed Dracula (with the male characters playing the part of the "brides" and the enthralled victims.) And of course, London was the target of the original Dracula as well. You don't see movies made with this kind of risk and ambition anymore.
You nailed it, those days were in someways very different. No one would do this amazing flick today. The attitude and energy put into this movie. My childhood favourite vampire, the space-girl !
that's the problem with today's thinking, everything has to be for some "cause". gender-reversed... who cares? why focus on that? This movie is it's own thing, not some kind of political viewpoint nonsense that's trying to appeal to some ridiculous movement of any sort. If it was made today with that whole "gender-reverse" idea in mind, it would have ruined the film, because they would have beat us over the head with LOOK AT HOW REVERSED THIS IS, ITS DRACULA BUT A WOMAN AMIRITE?!? Just like how they screwed up ghostbusters, they couldn't make a good film, they had to shoehorn in the social ideas which is why it sucked.
I love this movie but I will say, Mathilda May is so damned hot it's actually distracting. She actually did a great job giving the girl an other worldly feel & I can't believe she didn't speak English, her accent is flawless. But damn man.. freeking hot..

Draskang totally agreed she did such a great job but wow her nakedness snd her sexuality really was distracting. She still is and was so gorgeous... definitely the epitome of female beauty and perfection in my opinion. But a great performance especially not being able to speak English
I recorded this off ITV in the nineties. I have since bought on DVD and digital download. To this day I couldn't tell you what happens apart from Mathilda May starkers.
I'm pretty sure all of her dialogue was dubbed. It's less common these days, but in the Bond films, Ursula Andress in "Dr. No," Gert Frobe in "Goldfinger," and Mie Hama in "You Only Live Twice" all had their lines dubbed because their English wasn't good enough. Hell, in the 1981 movie "Dragonslayer" the supporting character was played by American actor Albert Salmi, but has his lines overdubbed by a deeper-voiced English actor. And perhaps most famously, in the original "Mad Max" from 1979, all the actors, including Mel Gibson, had their voices dubbed by American actors for the American release, as the studios here though American audience would find the original Australian accents to hard to understand. So I'm certain Mathilda May's own voice is not heard in this film at all. Anyway, I think people were concentrating more on her other assets, which were considerable to say the least. When I saw the movie, I'll tell you frankly I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life, and not just because she was naked for almost all of her scenes. Her face was every bit as stunning as her body, if not more so. She was just so beautiful it hurt.
While this movie has some story problems, it's very underrated. Also this predates the "running zombies" trend. It succeeds on mood, has a fantastic music score, and the crowd scenes with zombies were really well done. The horror element is very well done and acting is top notch.
Very nice review. I remember this film from the 1980s, but it was the re-edited version and I remember getting blown away by Mancini's score on the end credits. I'll have to see if I can find the original version.
When you said the Japanese laserdisc cover looks like a cover of a rock album from the 80's; well Crimson Glory put that image on their 1988 release Transcendence!
I had always heard the rumor that some of the "dessicated" mannequins from "Lifeforce" were reused in the 1999 version of "The Mummy". I never could confirm it.
Another excellent review Oliver. Never seen Lifeforce I'd assumed it was just an adverage space flick at best but after seeing this I have to say you had me hooked at 'space vampires' .. everything else looks just mad enough to keep me interested, will deffo give this one a viewing now.

I really love this movie because it is just so bonkers you will never have anything made like this again because studio's are scared shitless of loosing any money and it's only going to get worse now that Batman V Superman didn't perform well. I love the 80's for film they always took chances then and sadly that's no more.
Sorry but ‘get worse because BvS didn’t perform well’, that movie is the epitome of not taking risks, shit screenwriting, a really lazy action flick. Its not even so bad its good, its boring as hell, and the main problem is that theatres and studios cant risk showing movies that are not superhero or action franchise blockbusters. Look at the box office in the last 10 or even 20 years, its saddening. After COVID especially, fewer drama’s or non-action flicks make it in the theatre because ppl dont have the patience. I’m Gen Z btw and ive noticed this trend is far too huge, among a lot of generations tbf
This movie messed me up as a kid. My gran recorded it for me on VHS and I remember not being able to watch it all because it was so scary. I was in primary school at the time, so younger than 11, but I can't remember my exact age. I think it explains a lot about my taste in sci-fi and women :D
I think Mathilda May was perfect for the role *because* she didn't have much of a grasp of English at the time. As her lines were likely learned phonetically and with only a basic understanding of what they meant, it explains the detached, sometimes halting delivery. Not only does her ethereal poise give her the vibe of a cross between a vampire queen and a goddess descended to earth, but that delivery perfectly expresses the mentality of a being accustomed to telepathic communication, not the rudimentary and clunky spoken languages of lesser life forms. If we had gotten an actress fluent in English, there might have been the temptation to ham it up and add too much drama and emotion to the space girl's lines, which in my opinion would have ruined the entire character. I really wish people would focus more on Mathilda May's amazing and unique performance and less on the nudity. Watching her act is like watching some mesmerizing new form of interpretive dance, probably due to her background in ballet, and I've never seen anything else like it before or since.
Fond memories of this movie, remember my dad saying "Check this crazy movie out" as a kid. Incidently, the Japanese title on the laserdisk is "Space Vampires".
I saw this on a Halloween when I was way too young to be allowed. It haunted my brain for years, and I've only just watched it fully this past year. It's as haunting as I remember. Such an interesting movie and concept. Very much due for a remake, in the right director's hands.
This August, Shout! Factory is going to release a limited, steel book edition of the movie. Also, both versions will be remaster in 4K resolution and it have the same, special features, except the vintage, behind-the scenes documentary, from the last release. It will sell in 10,000 units.
I have the Arrow blu ray of this, that is just fantastic. Great documentaries and commentaries. I always loved this film and for a Canon flick it really seemed they were putting everything into this to make it a great production. The practical effects are just awesome. Great retrospective Oliver.

I of course didn't find this movie until about 5 years ago so I know what it's like to know nothing about it and then BAM! You watch it and get blown away by the chaos! My mate used to bang on about it to me all the time and I never paid attention. Then one day saw the trailer and was like "I gotta see this movie"! Am no a big fan.
I remember catching this while channel hopping late one night years ago. Its a crazy movie but totally entertaining. Thanks for your retrospective Oliver as always it was a great upload.

Good review. You convinced me to go out and get the release with the missing footage. I always appreciated it for what it does and is, then what others think it is or expect.
you mentioned how the movie "KILLED OFF MAIN CHARACTERS" .. that is one of the great things about the movie., nobody was safe from dying, even the main character was "killed off" at the end.. that is what made the movie "alien" great too, because we never knew who was gonna die next.
Great review Oliver, love films like this, that kind of throw a few ideas at a wall and see what sticks. I think I was about 12 when I saw this back in the day, I still remember Mathilda May's being a stunning lady.
In general, I enjoy and respect your work; it is some of these best that can be found on UA-cam. That being said, I was expecting more in depth discussion of the film. I love this film and will watch it every few years or introduce it to a friend who has never had the experience. I agree that this is one of Cannon's best films and recommend the Arrow Blu-ray version as well as the Electric Bugaloo Documentary about Cannon films. Good Bad Flicks also has a nice 11 minute retrospective on the film. Thanks again for your great work in this series!
Great job as always Oliver, I caught the last minutes of this movie on one of the Encore channels and I liked what I saw so far. I have to say I'm interested in seeing this movie in it's entirety sometime. Looks like an awesome roller coaster ride of special effects mixed with an intriguing plot. I also never read "The Space Vampires" book, but I can tell this is an all but faithful adaptation. May have to look up the book sometime.
I absolutely LOVE this movie!!! Watching it again, it's really only the second act that drags and slows it down, but everything else is brilliant. It is a flawed film, and this would be perfect for a remake. Rather than remaking something nearly perfect like GHOSTBUSTERS, remake something good but flawed, something that could be improved upon. Of course, they'd probably just fuck it up now, but with the right director and writer, who knows or dares to dream...? Either way, we'll never get as much nudity!!!
This was a fantastic review/retrospective, Oliver! I'm glad its 30+ minutes long. This movie deserves no less. When I was about 8 or 9 years old I saw this on VHS. It was the eye-over-earth box art. The gut-wrenching way in which people are drained of their life force I found to be disturbing. The movie is truly like 3 or 4 movies in one. Despite being prepubescent I was drawn to the absolutely gorgeous naked woman and I didn't know why. LOL! The special effects, the plot, the ideas, the dark sets, the wide angle and narrow cinematic shots? Everything makes this movie wonderful. Thanks for doing such a great review.
I grew up transfixed by the vhs cover art in my local video library as a kid, I’ve watched it many times as an adult, but I hadn’t truly experienced this film until I watched it with my girlfriend recently. Discussing it afterward, we came to the conclusion that if it wasn’t for Carlson, none of this would have happened, so it’s kind of right he got skewered at the end (while skewering Mathilda May)

I was aware of Lifeforce when it came out, but I was too young and it freaked me out too much to go and see it, but it's fascinated me ever since. P.S. Please consider doing an Invaders From Mars retrospective.
Very good revue. Balanced with consideration and respect for the part that Mathilda May played and the manner in which she was required to portray the alien.
Colin Wilson's novel is well-worth reading to better understand the underlying themes about what the "lifeforce" is. It is sort of a companion piece to The Mind Parasites (he sure chose some of the most blantant, simplistic titles for his books, considering the philosophical ideas he was exploring). Also worth checking into Wilson's interests and comments over the years about Lovecraft.

This film is great. I saw it on its release in London and it was the maddest, funniest horror/Sci-Fi action flick I've ever seen. See it I implore you if you love 80s cheesy action/horror films. The best non Quatermass naked vampires from space that go bezerk in London horror film ever made!
I was watching ''The Jackal'' (the one with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere) on UK television the other day and Gere's character had a former partner whose face I couldn't pin down but I was certain I recognised. Lo and behold, in the credits it's Miss Mathilda May and she has aged beautifully (although she is by no means an old woman).
I remember when my dad took me to see this movie in the Cinema. I love it and was also horrified by it. I watched it again about 10 years ago and I was surprised how good it stood the test of time. I still really like this movie.

I laughed when you mentioned Dr. Pepper, my dressing room was next to Tobe's room, I remember being in there and seeing box loads of the stuff. I have loved this movie since I was a child and even though it took years I finally got it on dvd 📀 a few years ago. Matilda May has always reminded me of a young Kate Beckinsale and I bet now I have said it you will see it too 😀
I remember seeing the cover of this film as a child at the video rental store. I watched for the first time after seeing this review. I found it very entertaining. It's more of a Sci-fi thriller than a horror. I give it a 7/10. I will watch it again.

nice coverage, I remember seeing this at a theater with my mom and brother when it came out it was in 70mm Dolby and the female nude lead was about 40 feet tall, perfect for a young man's fantasy :-) a true 'kitchen' sink movie where it goes all over the place...like you said, different movies smashed together

I found this online for watching and I am so glad that I found your channel and I watched this review because this movie was fucking AMAZING! It has got to be my new favorite vampire movie. Definitely in the top ten alien and zombie movies too. Holy fuck. It's just so much of a rush. There were scenes in this movie that were exhilarating. The end ramps it up so much. I love this movie. I saw this movie in the theaters when I was very young. I bought a ticket to a different movie and snuck in to this. It was absolutely marvelous for a pubescent boy.

Lifeforce is a criminally underrated movie. Although based on Colin Wilson's book, it's basically a Quatermass movie. In fact, all you'd need to do is made Frank Finlay's character the hero, and rename him Bernard Quatermass. Check out Quatermass and the Pit (a.k.a. Five Million Years to Earth in the United States) for many, many similarities.
SpyroJance I saw Five Million Years to Earth as part of a double feature with Planet of the Apes back in 1968. I was much more impressed with the Quatermass picture. It shows what you can do with a small budget if you do it right. (except for the marching grasshopper Martians) You're right. Lifeforce reminded me of a Quatermass movie but the poor pacing and focus really disappointed me. Steve Railsback has the charisma of a rock.
You're spot on. "Quatermass and the Pit"/"Five Million Years to Earth," one of the best of all time. (Even the cheesy marching grasshoppers don't diminish the terror, the build-up to which is tremendous.) Awesome movie!

The movie could have been told from Finlay's character's perspective and it might have been much better, given Finlay's on-screen charisma, something the main character lacks.
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING!, it's very, VERY quatermass and i love it, especially with the Astronaut returning to earth and the finale of a supernatural alien force destroying london and turning the people into monsters of some kind, also came off (ironically considering your profile pic) like a R-rated Doctor who story without the doctor at times.
Mathilda May's character is, indeed, credited as 'Space Girl'.
In regard to her performance, I was always struck by (you know, beyond the obvious, of course) her poise, as nearly 80% of her screen time, she is full-on nude. She really does come across as some sort of creature for whom, this naked human female form, is nothing more than a tool to be used for conquest, just a costume to wear, and the creature wears it with total indifference. Mathilda May played that seductive yet mechanical indifference perfectly.
Well said, Keith Thorpe! I so agree with you about Mathilda May's otherwordly embodiment of the "Space Girl" alien. This was Ms. May's first movie role, and she was only 20 years old at the time. The hypnotic pull that she casts is remarkable for someone so young. By that, I mean, like you, that even if there was no full-frontal or backside nudity, her performance would still have this effect. The space girl isn't a vacant "zombie queen," but is devastatingly deadly in her objectives. Mathilda May makes this entirely convincing. And she consistently maintains that frightening, mesmerizing aura throughout the entire movie. It's a performance which, mostly wordless, in fact requires self-discipline and control, and which saves her role from falling victim to camp -- even as most of the rest of the movie does.
Without Ms. May, this film would have no compelling power; indeed, no "life force." (And, no, I don't mean just because of her nudity, you guys!) She carries this entire movie, and is the main reason why it is so uniquely memorable to many viewers. Had Ms. May's performance been anything less, it would have been uproariously bad. Of course, eyes would have no shortage of pleasure in seeing her body. But, then, that's the kicker. May's performance seems all the more alluring and exotic precisely owing to her captivating hold, as an actress, over not just the other characters, but over we, the viewers, as well. And why does no one mention the lighting on her body? It accentuates her dream-like physical beauty all the more. There, too, the choice not to apply excessive makeup on Ms. May was smart: the very purity of her appearance, of her face and body, creates the utterly compelling effect of simultaneous, helpless attraction and fear in those who look upon her. The truth is that a femme fatale, be she human or alien, casts the same devastating delirium. As most male viewers would attest, they would happily go to their doom in the embrace of the "Space Girl." (And where the opposite is also true. For those who've seen Frank Langella, as Count Dracula, in the 1979 movie "Dracula," you would know that female viewers would just as enthusiastically say the same of Langella's performance. In that role, he perfectly personifies many a woman's fantasy of a Count Dracula.)
In another YT video, Ms. May expresses that she was treated kindly, courteously, and with classiness and sensitivity by the main actors and director Tobe Hooper; and that they, considerably older than she, were gentlemanly toward her. In that same video, she is genuinely effusive about the serious career accolades of some of her co-stars (such as Frank Finlay, but whose thespian chops, I must admit, he seems to have ditched in this movie, having failed to find a fitting middle-ground). At the same time, it's terrible to hear, in the interview, that, once she arrived in London, she was suddenly told she would be required to be nude in the movie. She was only 20 years old, by herself, couldn't speak English, there to be in her first movie! She was kept in the dark until that moment (including by her agent, who was female!); so she was completely broad-sided and, obviously, shocked and upset by it, if not panicked. That was sooo wrong, manipulative, and cruel at thing to do. But, as she herself says in the interview, had she been told this ahead of time, she may have refused to be in the movie; and where the filmmakers knew she was the one for the part, not least of which for her discipline of the body, as a ballet dancer.
Still, for such a young woman, who'd never been in front of a film camera before, how incredibly uncomfortable it must have been for her -- with a whole crew of men only a few feet from her during filming. That she appears, on screen, as composed and poised as she does (seeing that alien vampire queens are, of course, supposed to be -- sarcasm), is truly remarkable under those circumstances. It also suggests how professional she was. That's truly impressive. Also, as Ms. May herself says, ballet had trained her to use the body as a "work instrument" of creative expression, but not as an object of titillation. But even for those who are entirely comfortable with their body, as professional dancers are, it's quite another thing for a very young woman to be completely nude or partially nude, in all of her scenes, in front of so many men. It makes me wonder if there were any women on the crew during actual shooting; any who reassured her, looked after her well-being, even befriended her, to offset her sense of loneliness in a country whose language she hadn't yet learned to speak. (But which, by the end of the months-long shoot, she did learn: a smart young woman who had a highly attuned ear to the classically trained British actors in the movie, whose command of English she was attentive to.) Nonetheless, was there at least a French-language translator on set? If she didn't have any of those supports, whose failure was that? Obviously, the movie was made in a less 'enlightened' period than now on these matters, but which is hardly an excuse. It doesn't sound like those supports were there for her. Indeed, it seems she was pretty much dropped off in London, and left to fend for herself, all alone. Apparently, by her descriptions, it sounds like the crew was good to her. I certainly hope that was true, and that the experience of making the movie didn't traumatize her in any lasting way. Despite the working conditions (and the discomfort she naturally feels when some of the movie's obsessive male fans talk to her), she speaks well of the movie. That says a lot about her as a person and as a professional actor.
Although I wish it didn't matter to say so, I am a heterosexual female. It's also why, what started out as a very short response-comment, is unintentionally turning out to be so long! Part of the reason is because, sadly, I've not come across (self-identified) heterosexual female viewers who love this crazy movie as much as its (obviously, heterosexual) male fans do. And for much of the same reason: Ms. May's incredibly captivating, entrancing beauty. But more important, to me, is the quality of her subtle yet entirely convincing, magnetic performance that makes it what it is.
(For the males out there who don't know this, many heterosexual women are naturally at ease with openly expressing their appreciation of another woman's physical beauty. Usually, there is no sexual charge in a straight woman's enjoyment of looking upon, and admiring, the beauty of another woman. But where there is such a sexual attraction, most women who feel it don't make a public display of it. The most psychologically and sexually secure heterosexual women have no shame about such a sexual attraction to one of their own; they simply have the good taste not to make a public show of it. On this point, however, I can't speak for gay women. or any other gender-identity experience. Nevertheless, this is one of the many benefits of being a woman, and in women who are comfortable with their sexuality and erotic freedom.)
Undoubtedly, the fact that Ms. May is European (specifically, French) has a great deal to do with how attractive she is in this movie. Most U.S. American women do not have the effortless quality of feminine "je ne sais quoi" which Ms. May exudes in this film -- what one might describe as an air of ephemeral allure. In interviews, Ms. May personifies this attribute, as do many of her European sisters. Or, at least, those of her generation do/did, as did those in prior generations. By comparison, instead of being classy or having real, original/imaginative style, it's crassness and glibness, in recent generations in the U.S., which overwhelmingly prevail in the culture. It's an ugliness that seems to have infected much of the world -- perhaps analogous to what the "alien vampire queen" does in this movie. I find it to be unattractive in both sexes and in all genders. And, in women in particular, is anything but attractive or feminine. But that's just my own, very subjective opinion.)
So, as an open thought: Thank you, Mathilda May, for being such a brave young woman to take on this role. Your performance is the only one of its kind, in a movie of this genre, and is a lasting memory for many of us. It is a performance that is completely captivating, something uniquely special -- and in ways far more than just one.
[This role doesn't solely define Ms. May, or her career. After this movie, she went on to do more seriously engaging roles as an actress. I just wish most of this movie's fans didn't exclusively, sexually objectify her, in real life. Regrettably, this is inevitable for physically attractive women, and especially those, indeed, in the public eye. Still, it's a terribly crude and invasive feeling for a woman. It's something akin to visual rape. I cringe to think what Ms. May feels when a tactless fan of this movie approaches her. Obviously, males are biologically hard-wired to stare at women whom they find physically attractive. This is natural and, in healthy men who respect women, such robust desire is welcome! And there are few women who don't want their beauty -- be it external and/or internal -- to be appreciated and desirable. But the difference is that it's the tyranny of "the (degrading) male gaze" which repels most women, something they neither welcome nor like. Unfortunately, far too many grown males remain stuck in perpetual adolescence, and have no notion of what it is to be a man who can express his sexual attraction toward a woman in a classy or genuinely witty or imaginative, sincere way which does not debase or degrade her innate dignity as a human being and as a woman. (Hint, hint, guys: that's a quality of virile, considerate, even sensitized finesse in a man -- versus a dumb pick-up line, or other transparently cynical 'strategy' -- which most women find immensely attractive. ;))]

At the same time, and this is what I love about this (or any good horror/sci-fi) movie, were the human race ruled only by their stark-raving gonads and/or homicidal impulses, our species would have little claim to survival over time, much less to any enduring humanity. A planet riddled with sex-addict/homicidal zombies/vampires isn't quite the best playground to be in. Unless (for hetero males), the female ones all look like Mathilda May. lol

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Back in the day, I watched Lifeforce at a theatre in Denver, Colorado USA then drove 15 miles to another theatre and watched Back to the Future. They were very different, but both were enjoyable and still remain favorites. In hindsight, I wish I'd watched Lifeforce twice. I've seen it many times on video but only once on the big screen. As a young man, I had a massive crush on Matilda May, and when she spoke to Carlson, " I took my shape from your mind. I took your language. I became the woman I found there, in your deepest thoughts, your deepest... needs. I am the feminine in your mind, Carlson." I felt struck by lightning as if she were speaking to me. Her voice and the swirl in her eyes, that really fascinated me, even though I knew it was probably all special effects magic... still it was a fun time. I had a poster of a close-up of her eyes on my wall for many years. When I listen to the lines again here, there is still that electric tingle in my neck, and I feel like a young man. Thanks for the refreshed memories.

I love Lifeforce!!! It's like the best parts of a season of a sci-fi anthology series trimmed down and thrown into one package. So if you don't like the first 15 minutes, just wait and the next 15 minutes will be something new! So fun.

Life force deeply moved me spiritually as a film and it is only second to " The Dead Zone " in that regard. What struck me was the theme that we are energy and we are spirit. When you focus on this idea while watching the film then the deeper meaning of it will reach you. I don't find any part of Life force as cheesey or silly. The intensity of it stays with you but you must concentrate as there is so much going on

I have nothing but love for this film, even though this is actually the FIRST time its been properly explained to me. I had NO IDEA what was going on when my cousin took me to see it when I was 13. We saw it in a grand dilapidated movie palace in some ghetto in Newark, New Jersey. My first time seeing nudity on screen, and I was blown away by the special effects. I remember it was a triple feature- Blade Runner Directors Cut/Sharkey's Machine/LifeForce.

In 2015, Steve Railsback was at the Hollwood Show where many fans had him signing LIfeForce items. Every 20 minutes he would scream out at the top of this lungs. I wondered if he was going crazy. Then I realized that he was re-creating his Carlson yell that you see near the end of this video.

That main theme is just excellent. As for the movie itself, I only ever saw part of it on TV when I was younger, and I barely remember anything about it. Will have to buy the Blu Ray and change that. Great retrospective Oliver.

This is a movie I wouldn't mind seeing a remake off. Space vampires is an awesome concept but the movie could've used a few rewrites to really iron out the kinks and extend more on the creatures. And with today's pratical effects and CGI, I think it could look phenomenal.
I loved this film. It had a lot to do with the fact I had seen Steven Railsback as Charles Manson in the telepic "Helter Skelter" based on the true life events of the Tate/LaBianca killings of 1969. The funny part of it all was, I hadn't remembered that Patrick Stewart was in this until I'd seen him as Gurney Halick from David Lynch's "Dune". I remember an interview with Patrick for "Star Trek: The Next Generation" where he played Jean Luc Picard, and the interviewer asked him if he was into science fiction before playing the part of Picard. Stewart said he'd done "Dune" but then "kissed Charles Manson in a film...." His funny throwback to having done "Lifeforce". Thanks for this review. I have to see if I can get ahold of a copy of this film. Hopefully the original cut. I also loved Mancini's march music. One of my favourite main title pieces. Thanks for a great retrospective.

I'm glad to see this movie achieving cult status. It's fun to think of it as a gender-reversed Dracula (with the male characters playing the part of the "brides" and the enthralled victims.) And of course, London was the target of the original Dracula as well. You don't see movies made with this kind of risk and ambition anymore.
Probably because they're worried it will flop like this one. It's easier not to take risks.

that's the problem with today's thinking, everything has to be for some "cause". gender-reversed... who cares? why focus on that? This movie is it's own thing, not some kind of political viewpoint nonsense that's trying to appeal to some ridiculous movement of any sort.
If it was made today with that whole "gender-reverse" idea in mind, it would have ruined the film, because they would have beat us over the head with LOOK AT HOW REVERSED THIS IS, ITS DRACULA BUT A WOMAN AMIRITE?!? Just like how they screwed up ghostbusters, they couldn't make a good film, they had to shoehorn in the social ideas which is why it sucked.

Such a stunning film; one of my favorites. I first saw it in '86, at age 15. I thought it was terrifying. Railsback's performance was so high-anxiety.
I love this movie but I will say, Mathilda May is so damned hot it's actually distracting. She actually did a great job giving the girl an other worldly feel & I can't believe she didn't speak English, her accent is flawless. But damn man.. freeking hot..

I recorded this off ITV in the nineties. I have since bought on DVD and digital download. To this day I couldn't tell you what happens apart from Mathilda May starkers.
I'm pretty sure all of her dialogue was dubbed. It's less common these days, but in the Bond films, Ursula Andress in "Dr. No," Gert Frobe in "Goldfinger," and Mie Hama in "You Only Live Twice" all had their lines dubbed because their English wasn't good enough. Hell, in the 1981 movie "Dragonslayer" the supporting character was played by American actor Albert Salmi, but has his lines overdubbed by a deeper-voiced English actor. And perhaps most famously, in the original "Mad Max" from 1979, all the actors, including Mel Gibson, had their voices dubbed by American actors for the American release, as the studios here though American audience would find the original Australian accents to hard to understand.
So I'm certain Mathilda May's own voice is not heard in this film at all. Anyway, I think people were concentrating more on her other assets, which were considerable to say the least. When I saw the movie, I'll tell you frankly I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life, and not just because she was naked for almost all of her scenes. Her face was every bit as stunning as her body, if not more so. She was just so beautiful it hurt.

While this movie has some story problems, it's very underrated. Also this predates the "running zombies" trend. It succeeds on mood, has a fantastic music score, and the crowd scenes with zombies were really well done. The horror element is very well done and acting is top notch.

I had always heard the rumor that some of the "dessicated" mannequins from "Lifeforce" were reused in the 1999 version of "The Mummy". I never could confirm it.
I saw Lifeforce in the theatre when it was first released in the summer of 1985 an d loved it! It was so bizarre but worth a watch!

Another excellent review Oliver. Never seen Lifeforce I'd assumed it was just an adverage space flick at best but after seeing this I have to say you had me hooked at 'space vampires' .. everything else looks just mad enough to keep me interested, will deffo give this one a viewing now.

I remember the VHS tape on a shelf of my local video shop. The woman who ran the place refused that my brother and I rent it, due to our ages. I was secretly relieved because the still images on the back cover looked terrifying.

I really love this movie because it is just so bonkers you will never have anything made like this again because studio's are scared shitless of loosing any money and it's only going to get worse now that Batman V Superman didn't perform well. I love the 80's for film they always took chances then and sadly that's no more.

Sorry but ‘get worse because BvS didn’t perform well’, that movie is the epitome of not taking risks, shit screenwriting, a really lazy action flick. Its not even so bad its good, its boring as hell, and the main problem is that theatres and studios cant risk showing movies that are not superhero or action franchise blockbusters. Look at the box office in the last 10 or even 20 years, its saddening. After COVID especially, fewer drama’s or non-action flicks make it in the theatre because ppl dont have the patience. I’m Gen Z btw and ive noticed this trend is far too huge, among a lot of generations tbf

This movie messed me up as a kid. My gran recorded it for me on VHS and I remember not being able to watch it all because it was so scary. I was in primary school at the time, so younger than 11, but I can't remember my exact age. I think it explains a lot about my taste in sci-fi and women :D
I think Mathilda May was perfect for the role *because* she didn't have much of a grasp of English at the time. As her lines were likely learned phonetically and with only a basic understanding of what they meant, it explains the detached, sometimes halting delivery. Not only does her ethereal poise give her the vibe of a cross between a vampire queen and a goddess descended to earth, but that delivery perfectly expresses the mentality of a being accustomed to telepathic communication, not the rudimentary and clunky spoken languages of lesser life forms. If we had gotten an actress fluent in English, there might have been the temptation to ham it up and add too much drama and emotion to the space girl's lines, which in my opinion would have ruined the entire character. I really wish people would focus more on Mathilda May's amazing and unique performance and less on the nudity. Watching her act is like watching some mesmerizing new form of interpretive dance, probably due to her background in ballet, and I've never seen anything else like it before or since.
I agree with you. I guess particular lines that would’ve ruined the character would be, “Be with me or die! Your choice!”
Fond memories of this movie, remember my dad saying "Check this crazy movie out" as a kid.

I saw this on a Halloween when I was way too young to be allowed. It haunted my brain for years, and I've only just watched it fully this past year. It's as haunting as I remember. Such an interesting movie and concept. Very much due for a remake, in the right director's hands.
This August, Shout! Factory is going to release a limited, steel book edition of the movie. Also, both versions will be remaster in 4K resolution and it have the same, special features, except the vintage, behind-the scenes documentary, from the last release. It will sell in 10,000 units.

I have the Arrow blu ray of this, that is just fantastic. Great documentaries and commentaries. I always loved this film and for a Canon flick it really seemed they were putting everything into this to make it a great production. The practical effects are just awesome. Great retrospective Oliver.

I of course didn't find this movie until about 5 years ago so I know what it's like to know nothing about it and then BAM! You watch it and get blown away by the chaos! My mate used to bang on about it to me all the time and I never paid attention. Then one day saw the trailer and was like "I gotta see this movie"! Am no a big fan.
I remember catching this while channel hopping late one night years ago. Its a crazy movie but totally entertaining.

Never heard of this thing until now. The way you described it makes me think of the movie Species but on a bigger scale. 10/10 retrospective.
Species is better executed for the most part... although bad cgi ages worse than practical effects perhaps.
you mentioned how the movie "KILLED OFF MAIN CHARACTERS" .. that is one of the great things about the movie., nobody was safe from dying, even the main character was "killed off" at the end.. that is what made the movie "alien" great too, because we never knew who was gonna die next.
I loved Lifeforce. It was bonkers and fun.
Even though I haven't seen, "LifeForce", it seems to be a good pick for a double feature with, "Leviathan".

I think I was about 12 when I saw this back in the day, I still remember Mathilda May's being a stunning lady.
In general, I enjoy and respect your work; it is some of these best that can be found on UA-cam. That being said, I was expecting more in depth discussion of the film. I love this film and will watch it every few years or introduce it to a friend who has never had the experience. I agree that this is one of Cannon's best films and recommend the Arrow Blu-ray version as well as the Electric Bugaloo Documentary about Cannon films. Good Bad Flicks also has a nice 11 minute retrospective on the film. Thanks again for your great work in this series!

Great job as always Oliver, I caught the last minutes of this movie on one of the Encore channels and I liked what I saw so far. I have to say I'm interested in seeing this movie in it's entirety sometime. Looks like an awesome roller coaster ride of special effects mixed with an intriguing plot. I also never read "The Space Vampires" book, but I can tell this is an all but faithful adaptation. May have to look up the book sometime.

I absolutely LOVE this movie!!! Watching it again, it's really only the second act that drags and slows it down, but everything else is brilliant. It is a flawed film, and this would be perfect for a remake. Rather than remaking something nearly perfect like GHOSTBUSTERS, remake something good but flawed, something that could be improved upon. Of course, they'd probably just fuck it up now, but with the right director and writer, who knows or dares to dream...? Either way, we'll never get as much nudity!!!

This was a fantastic review/retrospective, Oliver! I'm glad its 30+ minutes long. This movie deserves no less. When I was about 8 or 9 years old I saw this on VHS. It was the eye-over-earth box art. The gut-wrenching way in which people are drained of their life force I found to be disturbing. The movie is truly like 3 or 4 movies in one. Despite being prepubescent I was drawn to the absolutely gorgeous naked woman and I didn't know why. LOL! The special effects, the plot, the ideas, the dark sets, the wide angle and narrow cinematic shots? Everything makes this movie wonderful. Thanks for doing such a great review.

I grew up transfixed by the vhs cover art in my local video library as a kid, I’ve watched it many times as an adult, but I hadn’t truly experienced this film until I watched it with my girlfriend recently. Discussing it afterward, we came to the conclusion that if it wasn’t for Carlson, none of this would have happened, so it’s kind of right he got skewered at the end (while skewering Mathilda May)

Colin Wilson's novel is well-worth reading to better understand the underlying themes about what the "lifeforce" is. It is sort of a companion piece to The Mind Parasites (he sure chose some of the most blantant, simplistic titles for his books, considering the philosophical ideas he was exploring). Also worth checking into Wilson's interests and comments over the years about Lovecraft.

This film is great. I saw it on its release in London and it was the maddest, funniest horror/Sci-Fi action flick I've ever seen. See it I implore you if you love 80s cheesy action/horror films. The best non Quatermass naked vampires from space that go bezerk in London horror film ever made!
I was watching ''The Jackal'' (the one with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere) on UK television the other day and Gere's character had a former partner whose face I couldn't pin down but I was certain I recognised. Lo and behold, in the credits it's Miss Mathilda May and she has aged beautifully (although she is by no means an old woman).

I remember when my dad took me to see this movie in the Cinema. I love it and was also horrified by it. I watched it again about 10 years ago and I was surprised how good it stood the test of time. I still really like this movie.

I laughed when you mentioned Dr. Pepper, my dressing room was next to Tobe's room, I remember being in there and seeing box loads of the stuff. I have loved this movie since I was a child and even though it took years I finally got it on dvd 📀 a few years ago. Matilda May has always reminded me of a young Kate Beckinsale and I bet now I have said it you will see it too 😀

I remember seeing the cover of this film as a child at the video rental store. I watched for the first time after seeing this review. I found it very entertaining. It's more of a Sci-fi thriller than a horror. I give it a 7/10. I will watch it again.

Yeah, just got the Arrow Bluray and it's fantastic. I can see why you mentioned the Kane actor having been a good potential Doctor Who of the time as he does look a lot like Colin Baker.
He actually looks like a half-way hybrid between the 5th Doctor Peter Davison and the 6th Doctor Colin Baker. Sort of, if you could have paused the regeneration cycle at the mid-point between them.
