Markus is back in Germany, has a 0.0% beer and is discussing the CCC and UTMB results with Ned who tunes in from Los Angeles. CCC saw some great running by Hayden Hawkes, Peter Frano and Adam Peterman. Toni Mccan pushed hard and came first, followed by Martyna Mlynarczyk and Rosanna Buchauer. UTMB felt like the race of elite DNFs. Many top athletes dropped out and so it left the fairly unknown Vincent Bouilla...
Just some observations on the DNF rate. I've run at five different UTMB events. Running long distances isn't easy in the best, most familiar of conditions. But destination races introduce variables that are difficult to train for or adjust to. Weather and surface are the most obvious. But even on-course nutrition can be challenging. And altitude can be an issue in some. The DNF rate of the UTMB races I've been in is always more than one-third. We all know the admonition to not start too fast, but crowded single-track can make this hard to control especially when the other racers will impact your pacing strategy and position.
