Tarragona has been a port of call for the US Navy for many years, even the aircraft John Fitgerald Kennedy called this port twice. I recommend all seafarers to visit the city, enjoying its gastronomy and its beaches. It handles more than 30 millions tons of goods, being the fourth or fifth port in Spain. Nice city and nice people. A very well edited video. Thanks from Tarraco!

Chief Makoi, I'm like you, here in America as I traveled all over North America especially as I drove my trucks out in the open country I'd see old buildings, farm houses, barns, etc. I always asked myself, "If these places and structures could tell me their stories of the many people that built them from the ground up, who lived and worked inside each, why did they leave, were they peaceful places for the families that called them home?" I always enjoy all your historical places you show and talk about to all of us & sharing your s and your shipmate's lives with all of us, Be & Stay Well my friend.

Tarragona Spain is a beautiful small city on the Med. I visited there many many years ago in the mid 1960's and nothing has changed much over that time. It's great you're into ancient history especially the Roman Empire and their far reaching effect on Europe. There's another Roman amphitheater located in Arles, France that remains in use to this day. Although not located on the Med, it's worth a day trip from Marseilles should you ever have shore leave there. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

You really missed out with all your time in only 1 fleet. I ended my Navy enlistments in the Med. Even then, upon later review, I keep saying Oh Cr*p, I miss that place! First rule: Get past the 'Sailor town' bars (besides, the beer was better where the local folk went). Second rule: Walk around, (been lost more than once) and see more than just the tourist spots. Third rule: Take pictures. 50 years later, I see all those Memories

I was in a VP Squadron in the early 70s. I got dropped off for 5 days R&R in Athens and spent most of that time exploring the old sites. I also got to see many sites in South America, Sicily, Rota, Spain and Azores. I did four years and the only ships I saw the inside of were getting parts off them on the South America trip. I also had steak and eggs in the Chiefs Mess on the 650 sub in Spain at about 2am after going out having beers with my brother., he was a STC on that boat.

@@steveurbach3093 I spent quite a bit of time in Rota, Spain in a VP outfit. We knew the local back street bars where the locals hung out. When the fleet was in we’d hang out, at these bars and drink and cheer for their soccer teams. I took hundreds of color slides of all my travels.

Good to see ya again Chief. There certainly are some beautiful places out there. Living in Pennsylvania we look at history here in the US as a couple hundred years, we were in Italy a few years back and they measure history by the thousand years!!! It's really hard to describe to people what it's like being at those ancient sites. I can't imagine how difficult it must be being stuck on the ship for so long. For those who have wives waiting at home I nominate them for saint hood. Gods Peace Chief.

Anthony, I live in Tucson AZ. We hosted kids from a group called Up With People years ago, and we would take the kids to local places of interest when hey had a day off from learning the show.
One of the places we took Marie, a girl from Switzerland, was a church build by Spanish monks in 1692. When I told Marie where we were taking her, I described it as very old, more than a few hundred years. She told me that she was from a small town in Switzerland, and that they had bars in the town that were build over 1,000 years ago!

I see in the background, of the shots overlooking the harbour, that there where many ships at anchor. Obviously, the Port was experiencing a backlog of ships to both load/unload, which has become an issue with Ports around the world. I recall from previous vlogs of yours, you have experienced the same backlog issues. It is a sign of "current times" with shipping, and no Country is immune from it. Safe travels, Chief, look forward to sailing with you, from Tarragona.

A beautiful video, thank you! Your videos are better than every documentary about cargo-shipping or seafaring you can see on TV; you're showing your personal impressions and experiences that makes it so interesting.
I have one question, when you have the chance for a shore-leave: Do you need a visa or something, when you leave the harbor for a shore leave? If yes, will you get this in the port on the day you want to go on shore, or do you need to request or even apply for the visa before you arrive in the country?
All the best and greetings from Germany

If a ship has been at sea for several weeks, it should be obvious that nobody onboard has an active case of Covid. How could they have gotten it?

    • @petermichaelgreen
      @petermichaelgreen 2 роки тому

@@jimgood1949 They could get it from someone else on-board. A group of people living together can harbor Covid for much longer than any one of them individually can.
Though at this point in the Pandemic I doubt it's a huge concern for European countries. Presumably this is why Spain is allowing seafarers to to go ashore.
There is also the risk of the crewe picking up Covid and causing a medical crisis on the ship. Presumablly this risk is mitigated by vaccination and testing.

I always liked seeing ruins or old forts or typical building architecture styles in the different ports when I would get shore leave. Many times the eng. dept. would get their shore time cut short or wouldn't happen at all due to scheduled fueling operations. I know you know how that goes. It felt so good to go ashore and reduce that fatigue and feel normal again just walking and looking around after long stints at sea or worse, being in a port where you couldn't go ashore for one reason or another. This brings back a lot of memories, mostly good ones. Thanks for the video chief. Have a good watch.

I used to head for the local rubdown joint when I had a run a shore. Spend a few hundred on beautiful ladies from around the world. Spain was a favourite, Thailand...so many lovely ladies

Sorry you guys went so long without shore leave. I’m glad you enjoyed this beautiful place! And I’m glad for your upload. 😍. Enjoyed it, as always. The aqueduct-wow. Never realized how massive they were!

I saw the picture you posted Chief Makoi, and I thought you where somewhere in the Mediterranean! So it was in Southern Spain, precisely Tarragona, Spain!! I always wanted to go there and soon when I get my MMC in the mail ( I finished getting my STCW, Physical, TWIC Card ), I'll be able to take a voyage aboard a Cargo Ship like you do and will hopefully get to stop there for a port call. The United States Navy Aircraft Carrier USS. John F. Kennedy CV-67 stopped there with her Carrier Air Wing-7 ( CVW-7 ) back in 2002 on her way back from a deployment. I always wanted to sail to the Mediterranean Sea aboard a ship whether it was a United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, United States Military Sealift Command ( MSC ), or a Commercial Vessel like a Maersk Line Container Ship doesn't matter to me as long as I get to go. Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, and Morroco are places I'd love to go. I'd love to check out Asian ports in Japan, The Philippines, and Taiwan too. Another awesome video as usual on your channel Chief and yes sir I'm definitely "Entertained"! I'm inspired watching your videos and I learn a lot. Thanks for sharing and please continue if you will. Have a blessed day!! 🇺🇸⚓️🇵🇭🌊⛴🍺

Thank you again chief. Chances are I'll never be able to go where you have traveled. You are already there while I go to the mall when you can enjoy the history around the culture and I thank you again for sharing that in your videos because I get to watch those in the closest I have to go in there I get to watch your videos thank you for sharing the root of true culture keep up the good work Superman. Just my opinion Joe Dirt

Thank you, Chief for making these videos. Bravo Zulu. You and I are kindred spirits: I, too, think it a waste to travel to exotic faraway places and only visit shopping malls and the likes. It's like travelling to places far from the US and eating only at the local McDonald's. Fair winds and following seas.
