The reason this song isn't as crazy may be because Johnny himself, despite being this mix of a cowboy, samurai and a pirate, is just a normal human. He doesn't have any super powers or magic of any kind, he's just a really REALLY talented swordsman
This song is seemingly not from his perspective, rather it is themed like a bunch of people telling folk tales about Johnny, which is a first. Fitting the legendary gambler has a folk-song esc theme
@amitaish1055 well with Testament it is kind of from their perspective, but of talking about what they are and finding their meaning, along with potentially views from Testament's dad and Dizzy
I’m not too familiar with Johnny lore but from what I’ve seen he’s the kinda leader of the jellyfish pirates which is crewed by war orphans (who are all women solely because he’s just really fond of girls) he rescued from the crusades (ww3 except against bio weapon creatures). The ships they use are all stolen from the government so naturally they’re wanted criminals in multiple areas but doesn’t get caught on account of him being a really cool guy For some other songs could you listen to some stuff from the monster hunter series like “succession of light”, the espinas theme from sunbreak, or the kulve taroth theme
I think this is very much worth mentioning: When the thick book is mentioned, the video says the lyrics are "would it have repeated all?", But what the singer is actually saying it "wouldn't have ripped it up", implying that Johnny thiught the thick book was stupid, and so he ripped it up. Also, because I know someones gonna say it, The actual singer of the song (Naoki Hashimoto) has stated that he is saying "wouldnt have ripped it up", the reason it doesnt sound like it is cause he seperated the word, making it sound like ripp-ed instead of ripped.
The story of johnny is pretty silly like you said. He was an orphan who was taught by a sword master to protect himself. He decided to go adopt other orphans who were affected by the war and became a pirate. He adopts only girls tho and even adopted may. He’s a ladies man robin hood pirate to sum it up. Just a short description of johnny there’s some details I probably forgot tho. Great video!
6:45 I think him having a katana (and doing a whole load of iajatsu) is kind of a neat translation of him being a Western archetype. The Japanese media equivalent to the rogue gunslinger is the ronin, and Iajatsu is a nice way to frame a quick-draw artist. He belongs to Kurosawa and Spaghetti Westerns at the same time.
Johnny is a Playboy Gambling Samurai Cowboy Sky-Pirate who in story is very cool and always succeeds. That's most of what he is, so they went with a different direction than most other themes. Instead of it being a normal Strive theme sung from the perspective of the character about their motivations, it's instead a song *about* Johnny and just how gosh darn cool he is. People described it as an in universe folk song, and I think that works well.
Dammit, now I imagine Johnny hunting down Slayer, not to seal him, but to annoy the vampire into lending him money for his crippling gambling addiction.
Johnny is basically a Gambling, Cowboy, Samurai Playboy Sky-Pirate. That about sums it up. Dudes very Robin Hood style and He's a character who has barely changed throughout the series cause he doesn't really need to He's true to himself and does what he thinks is right.
Also like you thought and others have said the song is folk style in the sense of it's less about Johnny himself and more about others singing about Johnny. His original theme was called Liquor Bar and a Drunkard so I feel like this song is supposed to match that energy. Like your all in a bar chattinh shit about Johnny one guy starts singing and the chorus is very easy to sing along with which pushes that idea more ESPECIALLY the "He'll come, He'll come." Parts overall the song is definitely not the craziest but it's definitely a solid fun song
Great reaction. I would personally put it in high A/low S tier. My main character (zato) got gutted pretty badly in the recent update, so I had to pick up a new main. As luck would have it johnny dropped the same day and I've been having a blast playing him
Yeah one super is the one you see in the video, “Joker Trick” where he tosses a card and cuts it along with the person behind it, then theres the other one “That’s My Name” where he knocks the opponent up then does a J-Shaped cut
if you ever want to know about the crazy lore of this series, there's a woolie VS video series on it. It's absolutely more wild than you could imagine. It covers everything in all the games up to strive
Johnny is a playboy, a gambler, a smuggler, a broker, a pirate captain, a renowned swordmaster, and a vigilante hero, all in one! Orphaned during the Crusades, he went trough a phase of despair before meeting a mysterious swordsman who took him in as a student and helped him find purpose in life again. After a few years, he Johnny decided to use his powers to protect those who were even less fortunate than he was, and took in a bunch of war orphans himself - except all of them are female, up to and including a cat. Using connections he made in the streets, he made enough money to give his fletchlings a home, but he knew they wouldn't be safe just in a house, so he went and got an actual airship, leading to the foundation of the now famous "Jellyfish Pirates". Over the course of Guilty Gear's story, Johnny mainly acts in two different roles: as an information broker with a massive intellignece network, and as a guardian to his pirate girls, with May as a focal point in the story due to his knowledge of her heritage. He's always on top of the situation, calm and collected, and prefers to avoid confrontation. That said, he's also very quick to flirt with any lady, even on the battlefield, though his honest admiration is generally perceived as sleazy. He hardly participated with the main story of any game, with only Guilty Gear XRD pushing him and May towards a central angle.
Plus the wrong ones are mostly because for some fucking reason "Scene was cold" and "It's anyone's call". To remind you, Naoki said "doesn't it sound like this?" he himself barely knows English, even tho he has dope pronounciation
I adore this character, he has a really fun and entertaining gameplay technique. His lines are epic and this guy is really cool. For Guilty Gear Strive his theme is very soft, a good BGM, but honestly I was expecting something aah... heavier ♪♪~
Honestly I didn't really like his theme at first but it grew on me. Not my favorite but I like it more now. I agree with the B grade. Johnny is my main but I am probably the only one who doesn't care for the playboy aspect. Maybe its a good thing that you find it crazy that he uses a katana. In fact that would be the cannon in world reaction to seeing Johnny using a katana and iaigiri. Iaigiri is a lost art and it is highly unusual for an American to be using Japanese lost art techniques. In fact he, chipp, and nago might be the only non japanese in Guilty gear to use any form of Japanese techniques whatsoever, and the only ones that use those specific styles of discipline.
You gotta check out the music of Killer Instinct (2013) it's a different fighting game with some insanity interesting music. The ost was made by Mick Gordon the guy who later did the doom games.
In terms of how well this song demonstrate the character via lyrics/use of instrument and melody, I think it's a solid 9/10. Still the most mid ost compared to others tho, I find it way too repetitive
You mean compared to Xx and Xrd? There are some valid criticisms of strive's ost but, a lack of verity is certainly not one. XX probably has the best balance of unique song identity and overall stylistic unity. The songs in Xrd probably have the widest spread of very strong to forgetable.
