  • ESPN MMA’s Ariel Helwani catches up with Anthony Smith nearly a week after his bout vs. Glover Teixeira at UFC Fight Night in Jacksonville, Florida. Smith updates his condition and discusses why (11:17) he didn’t want his corner to stop the fight. “Lionheart” also responds to media and announcers speaking out about the fight and referee Jason Herzog’s (24:00) apology on Twitter. Smith gives a timeline for the latest he’d want to return.

      a fighter is a fighter for a reason. You should appreciate fighters like him who give their 100% every time. If the man wants to fight till the end, then let him, or let the ref decide when to stop it. The damage they receive is what they signed up for, if he stopped fighting back then I would understand stopping it early, but he was fighting till the end. Most of the times, the guy loses but once in a while there is a moment like Elkins vs Bektic, and then everyone appreciates that the fight wasn't stopped. Anthony became one of my favorite fighters after this interview, he really is lionheart.

    Thing is, this is a sport. A dangerous sport. But nonetheless, a sport. A sport has rules. This is a 5 round fight, not a fight to the death. As much as I respect Anthony’s skills as a fighter, and his relentless courage and determination, he still exists and fights within the realm of rules and regulations. He’s free to express his feelings (concerning the media, referee, fans, etc), but he has no right to bash anyone that was concerned for his health in that fight. His mentality of “fight to the death” or “kill or be killed”, is only good for war, not a mixed martial arts organization. That’s my thoughts 💭

A lot of guys say they're willing to die in there (like Dom or Pettis) but if it really came down to it, I feel like they'd want the ref or their corner to save them. I honestly believe Anthony would rather die than quit. I really respect him for it, but at the same time, I really hope he has people around to save him if he actually makes that choice.

      Anthony is a stupid idiot, to think that his corner shouldn't be allowed to stop his fights. There is no great fighter in the history of fighting who would speak to his corner that way. Also, it means that he doesn't respect his corner enough to let them do the job that a corner is traditionally tasked with doing. Furthermore, it means that he values his own will over the will of his trainers. Any fighter that won't be obedient to his coaches and trainers is going to remain a second rate fighter. That, more than anything else is the takeaway from this: Anthony Smith is not teachable, he thinks that his opinion comes before the wisdom and experience of his coaches, and for that, he will never, ever become a truly elite fighter, like GSP, Dimitrius Johnson, Stipe, D.C., Khabib, Justin, Dustin, Alistair Overeem, or even Conor. He is simply too full of himself, and that's what makes him permanently second class. It also shows that he fears losing control, which is the reason that he was barely able to fight off an average man who intruded into his home, one strange night.

I'm just surprised that they never discussed the effect that the lack of crowd noise most likely had on so many people's perceptions of that fight. These are all great points. I do agree with what he's saying, but I think there's more to the 'clean up the sport' & 'safety protocols' side of the story though that needs to be addressed. Where do we draw the line on what's acceptable? What type of damage constitutes long term damage or brain trauma? And what can be done to prevent those type of injuries from happening IF the current system in place is not working successfully? Are we doing enough to protect fighters presently?
    I think those are the questions that needs to be answered, and by professionals. And hats off to Anthony for speaking out on it. Even though he's speaking from a warrior-type fighter's perspective it's still valuable information.

    Something i haven't seen anybody else bring up: Anthony Smith now has 9 KO losses on his record and is only 31. Doesn't sound like a very smart plan for the longevity of his career and his brain health.
    EDIT: To put it in perspective, Smith has more KO losses than all of these fighters who have been told to retire and have been called glass/suspect jaws: *Chris weidman, Luke Rockhold, James Vick, Donald Cerrone.*

    • @bobdole930
      @bobdole930 3 роки тому

      Rockhold is the only one in the list with a glass jaw, and it's because of a major flaw in his standup defense. The other guys are brawlers so getting the KO or getting KO'd is gonna happen, Cowboy being the best example. He's not gonna shy away from punishment, not the smartest but it sells and for his legacy he will be remembered for bringing an exciting fight everytime he's out there.

    • @bobdole930
      @bobdole930 3 роки тому

      I also think a ref stoppage KO and a you're on the moon flat as a board KO are very different for longevity. I don't think I've seen Anthony Smith truly out sleeping.

      @@bobdole930 Smith and Cerrone are similar in that hey are good at balling up when hurt instead of going lights out. I think taking punishment round after round is worse than going completely out with one punch.

    I understand trying to stand up for your corner but they should have stopped the fight! you know it so does 99.9% of the world. The end result was still the same and you could have saved 10 minutes of damage when your eye orbital was broke. I still think you are the better fighter and you got caught it happens

    • @cobrakaiX
      @cobrakaiX 4 роки тому +1

      Definitely agree that he is the better fighter. He looked really good at the start but he just came out too fast. I think he wanted a quick finish and Glover just wasn’t having it. If he had paced himself and was more tactical he would have won. I blame his corner for that as well although he is a veteran fighter. He got caught because he was exhausted IMO.
