  • A comparison and sound tests between my Roland GR-20 and GR-55 Guitar Synthesizers. The GR-55 is still currently available but you can still find the GR-20 on Ebay and Reverb at a good price, still a good buy if you just need some extra sounds or string pads etc, at the touch of a button. The GR-55 is more sophisticated and has more sound sources, including guitar, amp and effect pedal modeling. A bonus, you can use single coil models and high overdrive sounds without the normal hum or buzzing noises! ;0)

    If you want to use it live, I have developed a GK Wireless System. It has an additional footswitch to quickly switch between Guitar amp and GR55/GR20

      Sounds a great idea mate, If you want to send me one to review I'll do a video! I'm not too keen on wireless systems but maybe some viewers will be ;0)

    Great Vid thanks for posting, I've owned both units, GR20 tracks way better, but the GR55 has amazing features and sounds.

      Certain sounds track better and faster on the 55 but in general you are right ;0)

    I like them both yet I find the Gr20 better organized and easy to navigate. The other one offers inmense ops, yet doesn´t seem to have any order in the system. Like groups of similar sounds bunched together. Gr 20 gives you those grous lie organ, piano, winds, flutes, sinth. etc

    Half the art of guitar synth playing is changing the way you would normally play. Play to match the sound.

    Which one has more realistic sounds? I am most interested in the violin, cello and full strings ensemble. Is tracking something to worry about on the GR20 or GR33? Thank you for the great video.

      @GetawaysandGuitars  3 роки тому +1

      The string sounds are great on the GR55 and tracking on strings and cello are less of a problem than wind instruments and piano. You do need to play clean, as both are unforgiving with sloppy technique.

    Can you use gr55 without using gk cable and just using nomal cable?

    • @GetawaysandGuitars
      @GetawaysandGuitars  2 роки тому +1

      In a word no, but the newer Boss guitar synths don't need a GK, not as flexible but the tracking is instant ;0)

    I'm guessing the gr55 is much harder to figure out as much more on it, would the GR20 be best for syth beginner??

      They both have presets so they are easy to use, if you want to be more flexible with sounds the GR55 is the one to go for ;0)

    Hello, dear friend,thanks for your information. Now I have a problem so I would like to know if you are willing to help me. I am working with Sibelius notation music software in my PC. I use a "Midisport uno" interface. The problem happens when I try to assign midi channels to a different sounds of a Roland GR-20. When I open Sibelius configuration mode and then I assign the numbers of bank and program change number to channel number 1, everything is ok, but when I try to assign the next sound to channel 2, it doesn´t sound any sound when I activate the test function, however, the interface lights, indicating that the message has passed through the interface and get the GR-20, but no sound. The only sound I can get from the GR-20 is the one of channel1. In other words, I just can use only one sound at a time.
    Sorry for my English, my native language is Spanish.

    Hi Duggie . They both sound awesome . My question is which is the best for on the fly playing ie small gig or busking which is easier to operate . It appears the 55 you might need to pre plan ? Your thoughts please as Gr 20 is no longer produced I will struggle to get one
    Thanks

      Yeah, you would need to preset the sounds in somewhat of an order but you can change between the three banks pretty easily. Even on a GR20 or GR33 you would to an extent!

    I’m interested in one of these (or the GR33) for flute and sitar sounds. I don’t really need amp modeling, etc. Which would you recommend for that type of stuff?

    • @GetawaysandGuitars
      @GetawaysandGuitars  3 роки тому

      The GR20 or the GR33 would be ideal if you don't need the guitar and amp modeling ;0)

      I know it’s been a while since this video and comments.
      Wondering if you had decided on one. If so, which one and why?
      I can’t find a video comparing the GR-20, G30, and GR-33. The only experience I have is watching a fellow musician (friend) use one about 15 years ago. Used it for the phono part at the end of “Faith No More” “EPIC”.
      For 30+ years I’ve used just about everything but a synth. I hope you could I lighten me.
      Any info would be very much appreciated!

    I know it’s been a while since this video and comments.
    I do t want to spend $800-$1000+ I on a synth. So was looking for older models. But I can’t find any videos comparing the GR-20, G30, and GR-33 (seem to be top choices or highly recommended). The only experience I have is watching a fellow musician (friend) use one about 15 or ore years ago. He used a synth (not sure boss or Roland) for the piano part at the end of “Faith No More” “EPIC”.
    For 30+ years I’ve used just about everything but a synth. I hope someone could enlighten me.

    I've heard that the GR-20 have better tracking though, also is there a great difference in volume between patches in GR-55?
    I am thinking of getting either the 20 or 55 running in conjunction with GP-10.

    • @GetawaysandGuitars
      @GetawaysandGuitars  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, you need to set the patch volume, it can vary a lot. So many perimeters can change the tracking speed on the GR55, some are definitely better / faster on the GR20, the sax for instance. Two very different machines though! You wont need the GP-10 if you get the GR55 ;0)

    • @GetawaysandGuitars

      You really have to play clean or you can get ghost notes and whistles, it depends a lot on what patch you use though.

    Gr20 reminds me of when I was using the Gr707 guitar synth.... better sounds than I think the 55

    • @GetawaysandGuitars
      @GetawaysandGuitars  3 роки тому

      I think time has clouded your memories! The tracking on the Gr707 was really poor too. This has two oscillators, PCM guitar tones and you can mix in regular guitar, If you cant get a sound your not trying! ;0)
