The first time I heard this side, I thought _Hey! That's "Doncha Go 'Way Mad"_ , as I was well acquainted with the song in various vocal presentations. Illinois is often associated with his tenor squeaking of the stage environment, used to stir up the audience, but he produced a large quantity of truly beautiful -- and tasteful -- studio recordings in the mid-late '40s, this one among them.

New artist and song on me. But what isnt new, is Victor's recognition of what sounds are good music.

Glad that you like it. See his Wikipedia page, and then listen here to the famous Hampton recording which it references in the first paragraph: ua-cam.com/video/Lbh8RUfAkA0/v-deo.html

I had no idea that he was part of that masterpiece. Glad to learn that, and it was good to listen to that hit for the first time in a few years.

These late 40s Illinois Jacquet sessions are incredible. Some of these even had JJ Johnson on trombone and Leo Parker on baritone sax as well.
This one is one of my favorites.

I didn’t know there was an instrumental version of this, very nice!👍🏻

I wasn't aware that this tune existed before the lyrics were added, but it makes total sense, given the advanced, modern jazz structure of the melody.
