This is awesome, I've been using SketchUp since Google SketchUp 6 and Had no Idea!
I KNOW! I found out about this last week and was super excited! Thanks for watching!
You need to have Sketchup 2017 to download materials as described directly into your model. With earlier versions you have to use a browser to open up 3D Warehouse and then download materials to a folder.
I wasn't sure when they added this feature, so it's good to know that you need 2017 for it to work. Thanks for the comment!
That's a game changer. Love your work Justin. Thanks for all your videos they are the best on UA-cam.
That's what I said when I found out about it too! Thanks Tony!
You are a life saver. Thank you for sharing this.
Love your videos. And this was incredibly helpful. Thank you!
One tip from one public speaker to another... it's a small thing, but exile the words "stuff", "stuff like that", etc. They are filler words that provide no value and sound unprofessional. This is NOT to be mean... truly trying to help. It took me a while to get these out of my own vocabulary :).
This was awesome, Justin! Thanks for the great tip!
how do you do it through browser version of sketchup?
This was soooo helpful! Thank you so much!
WOW Justin! This I didn't know! You keep on amazing me! Thanks for this great tip. I love to search the internet for good textures and do some Photoshop my own. Also I use the photo match option to get some but this is going to become very handy! Thank you so much!
Glad you liked it Willem - I just found out about this myself!
Thanks friend.
Hey justin , can we add textures to 3d models of warehouse. If yes then how????
The same way you add textures to everything else? There's nothing special about the 3D Warehouse models...
How can you download them in Sketchup 2020 pro
Thanks. I didn't know this. But one point in this video is missed. The material is only in the current file or model. How I can save it that is allways available and how I can import "skm" files from: www.polantis.com/de/alucobond into sketchup?
Hi Konrad - I talk about that a bit in this video - ua-cam.com/video/PDe_sflYRf8/v-deo.html - about 5 minutes in. However, the short answer is that you can click the little arrow on the right hand side of the materials section of your tray, navigate to the folder where your material files are located, and click "select folder." Then that folder should show up in your drop down, and your materials should show up within that folder in the drop down. Hope this made sense!
thank you justin god bless you
Thanks for watching!
okay guys. Million dollar question: how do you then organize those new textures into, say, your custom 'Stone' folder that is NOT the stock folder? When i was on a macbook, it was as easy as right clicking in that folder and saving. However, on a PC, i am totally stumped as to how to do this. and none of my old texture libaries link. Im dying here. Suggestions anyone?
Hi Seth - Once you create a new material, you can find it in the "In model" section of the materials section of your tray, right click on it, and click the "Save As" option and save it in a folder. As to opening your old texture libraries, I've never switched from Mac to PC, but you should be able to click the little black arrow on the right side of your materials section of your tray, select "Open or Create a Collection," then select your folders that contain your textures. Let me know if this works!
Hey Justin. Thanks. Here's the thing: when i 'Open or Create a Collection' name of the folder shows up, but the folders are empty. I think this is because they are filled with JPGs, and NOT .SKM files. Honestly, when i was on a macbook, i didnt even know what an .SKM file was. Now, it seems that .SKM files are actually what the texture files are. This is a great and all, except when you need to migrate, say, 100 wood textures over. Rather than just linking a folder of those, one needs to 'convert' those jpgs by importing them into sketchup. But can you imagine doing that for a whole library of textures? That would be hundreds or maybe thousands of imports. I keep thinking that i am missing something. Even when i try re-mapping the textures to custom libraries, the jpgs dont show up unless i hit the "new materials" button. Thoughts? Thanks.
Hmm...I think you're going to have to find the SKM files on your Mac and bring them over. Maybe try the process in this thread? forums.sketchup.com/t/unable-to-import-skm-files/5267/12 - I haven't used SketchUp for Mac, but it seems like those files get placed in a hidden folder of some sort?
Thanks for that thread. Being that I no longer have that computer, I think it's probably a done deal. I guess I have to manually do this for my many years worth of textures. . . so strange. . .
Okay. one last question, and I'll shut up about this. Okay. so, referring to this video here: ua-cam.com/video/tWN_u_k51eo/v-deo.html where she tells how to import collections and save them etc.
My question is this: is there anyway that they can take place above the line, in alphabetical order? For example, I can drop all of my 'Wood' files into the existing 'wood' file. But if i want to place, say, a 'Wood, logs' file it would show up under the line. It's a petty thing, but it is nice to keep things alphabetically organized. It may seem stupid, but when you get advanced libraries going, that kind of stuff matters. Any thoughts? Thanks Justin for any advice.
how can i make components
