Possible asbestos in some of them.

What is a safe method to help soften to unroll long stored vintage cables, mainly mic or other vintage 60s music electronics thin flexible cables or of for some that dried in a curled stiff position

I think once that old plastics has hardened it is going to be very difficult to soften it without breaking down. You could try a heat gun but the off-gassing that stuff will do is probably pretty toxic. I'd replace because insulator material today is muuuuuuuch better than that of yesteryear. Hope that helps!

i think everyone who works on old electronics should have to watch this video . hell even if they work on new ones to . i run into this a lot in the handyman business. i think my worst one was about 1 1/2 years ago i had a elderly lady call us and said she had a antique lamp that smelled funny when she would turn it on . i get their she tells me she just had a LICENSED electrician rewire it. it looked like he put a off the shelf big box store replacement cord that was the first mistake its antique then he hand twisted the wires no wire nuts no soldier and some electrical tape that had came off one side was about apart and arcing off the base with burn marks on the lamp.i get stuff like this from antique lamp supply so i fixed it right and restored it back to working and antique order . and you are so right this stuff is so common. but people just don't have the work ethics like our parents and our grandparents had. i am so thankful that i picked that up at a young age. thanks for the video

Thanks! Probably most people are just a little in over their head and haven't had much in the way of apprenticeship. I like youtube videos where people show you how to do things! If we lose all the trades and apprentice models at least we can find people on YT. Thanks for watching! And thanks for keeping that lady from burning to death in a house fire!

Did you (re)use the original powerplugs or did you put some new ones on?
