I’m front row dancing in the green kilt at the left hand side this was the most challenging but rewarding experience I’ve ever got the honour of being part of xxx
I was a highland dancer for 16 yrs, let me tell you its work. What you are seeing here are some of the basics and reels for parades. But when you get into the Highland Fling, Sword Dance and Sailors Hornpipe and Shauntrews (sp) especially in competition there is a whole lot more involved I am in my 50's now and couldn't make it through the Highland Fling these days. But your high cuts should beat twice each time ont he back of your leg, you also have to concentrate on posture and make sure your arms stay firmly where they should be and not waving around all over. There is a lot to it, and if you have never done it, then don't knock it until you tried it. Kudos to all of you that do.
@dann It's not just kicking it is dancing What this involves is being on a half kicking you leg straight and having a pointed toes High cuts quick movement will being on a half point Search you tube for highland dancing six step fling that will change your mind !!
Do the different colours/bodice styles/tartan patterns (assuming tartan is the right word... ) mean anything? Like are they different clubs or schools? Or is it the girls'/boys' choice? :)
Dann Etchells it not just kicking your leg, it's hard work they are only showing basic steps. I do irish and Scottish dancing, don't say it's just kicking your leg. how about you try it and see how hard it is to do.

Dancing on that hard surface for so long must have been difficult!

Sometimes people get custom made kilts of family tartan, but it's just choice of whatever each dancer wants to wear :)
