  • One of a series of driver's ed films made by General Motors known as "We Drivers", this 1962 Jam Handy produced movie was shot near Detroit, Michigan in the community of Cloverdale. This very campy movie features miniature versions of the drivers - the "inner self" that speaks in a "wee little voice" through the miracle of special effects. The film emphasizes defense driving techniques, including not following cars too closely, and allowing a forward and rear safety zone. Never stop on a freeway, never back up, never make a u-turn …

    Everyone learning to drive in the U S should have to watch this film, as we have way to many drivers who shouldn't be driving a car/truck. Today's drivers are very rude and don't know the rules of the road. Good video.

    This film was part of GM's decades-long campaign to shield the auto industry from government safety regulation, in the face of the appalling accident toll. It was not until 1966, 70 years after the introduction of the automobile, that the first federal regs were handed down. Incidentally, there is no Cloverdale near Detroit, though many of these films were shot in part at the GM proving grounds at Milford, Michigan.

      Eh, this was before there was real, major pushes for that. Automakers made these kinds of films for 'corporate responsibility' reasons and to show off new models along the way.

      @@brandonquinto4852 With all due respect, I have to differ. Alfred Sloan himself engineered the blame-the-driver movement beginning in the late 20's and early 30's. The American Highway Users organization was one of his many fronts for this.

      @@DMBall I just don't know of anybody that was campaigning for federal intervention in automobile safety pre-Nader. I fully might be wrong though. I drive a corvair so I hope the blame-the-driver philosophy was right.

      Well yeah no one used them back then. Some of these people might have been wearing a lap belt though. Back then pretty much no vehicles had shoulder belts and if they had a safety restraint it would be a lap belt.

    • @frothe42
      @frothe42 4 роки тому +2

      Only certain European vehicles had shoulder belts, American manufacturers had to be mandated by law into adding them to vehicles. Just as many states now have mandatory seat belt laws.

      @@redtra236 You are correct. Very few people wore lap belts and even fewer used the shoulder belts when they were added in 1968. I was that rare teenager that buckled up both the lap and shoulder belts in the hand me down 1970 Buick Electra I had. This was in 1974 and after a week or so behind the wheel it was really a no brainer to buckle up both the lap and shoulder belts. All my friends thought I was nuts for buckling up and I was usually the only one in the car with the belts buckled. One night in 1968 a drunk driver in a Chevrolet suburban crossed the center line and hit me head on. I walked away with only bruises from the belts which was far better than the unbelted drunk driver.
