Hello Philip sensei. I hope and pray you and your beloved are in good health. I’ve gone over this particular video over and over. The concept of “sumi wa sen” helps brings to mind “the Irimi position” Please is it possible to make a video expanding on just this. For some reason it just gets to my heart. I believe others would benefit also

Thank you - I agree. Thanks for your suggestion. I'll look at expanding on that more in a future video.

I've been doing Toyama ryu botto-jutsu alongside my AIkido for years, I didn't know there were AIkido based iai type forms. I wouldn't mind learning these.

Greetings from Bangkok! Sadly the sports club our dojo (Mushin Ronin Aikido) is in is closed until May so my Sensei (Tony Tartagulia) and I have been practicing in the courtyard of his apartment. Hopefully we will be back in the dojo soon. If you or any of your students happen to ever travel to Bangkok in the future, you are more than welcome to train with us.

Hello Philip Sensei. I am for the first time in my Nishio ryu study beginning to understand the foot movements for irimi . Irimi is a part of every movement before any technique can be done Please could you make a video just emphasising and demonstrating the irimi half step. Please it will be blessing. Thanks and keep up the great work. I have turned done other martial arts because Nishio Sensei methods are natural, logical and my soul agrees with it.

Hi Solomon, the footwork is definitely a key point to understand. I'll be doing more videos in the coming weeks so I'll keep your suggestion in mind. Thank you!

I'm really enjoying these lessons. There is a lot of thought and aesthetic quality that you put into this series. I had a question on the movements that follow the sword cut. When you step your left foot back and move to gedan the sword moves up slightly before you position it to gedan. You do the same thing in seigan position as well. The sword dipping up just a bit till it settles, prior to chiburi and noto. Can you talk about those points?

You're observing some very subtle expressions! After the cut, when I step back, I bring the sword to chudan at about the half-step (feet together) and then lower to gedan as the left foot continues back. This lets me to firmly establish my balance and also control the center line prior to moving to gedan. I actually don't feel that it's incorrect to bring the sword directly to gedan if that feels comfortable. There's room for individual expression and for what feels natural. You also noticed from the seigan position, prior to noto, I lower the tip of the sword just a little. I'm transitioning to the chiburi and the sword needs to get lined up straight across from the saya so I let it settle down a little. You want a sense of calming and settling everything down at the end while staying very present. Some of these things will happen very naturally as you practice over time. Try to feel things in a natural way rather than just imitate.

@@GreenwoodAikido Thank you very much for the thoughtful response! I'm trying to take a week each with each lesson to practice. The raised heel is taking a bit of getting used to. I typical strike shomen or yokomen with the rear heel planted. I find that i can adapt and adopt my strikes with the heel raised now with a little bit of concentration.

Do you have any Aikido daily drill workout to sharpen our reflex and maybe also to substitute daily aerobic workout... I intend to create one but I'm not as expert like you.. I think most attack is straight or yokomen punch..so I thought is nice if we aikidoka have daily reflex drill or like KATA in Karate
