For real though, fighting with Britain again would have been a suicide for the US in that time period, they were way to fragile. On top of that, the French revolution was a huge mess and at least 7 times more chaotic and less organised.
To be fair, Why would the US would want to support the French in the first place, Yes although they helped us, and I'm grateful for that, but they only helped us to get revenge on England, they didn't even help at the beginning of the revolution, they waited until they knew that America was going to win eventually. And It was not the French Republic that helped the US gain independence, it was the French Monarchy that helped the US. And why would we help Robespierre and his extremist Jacobins in power at that time, they were tyrants that suppressed, perseceted and executed thousands of Innocent people during the reign of terror and the great terror. If we were to help them in their war, it would have seemed like we were aiding and helping a bunch of tyrants which directly contradicts the core principles of the beliefs of the revolution of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. And to blame Lafayette's imprisonment on Hamilton is stupid and unfair. It was his noble status that got him imprisoned, he was also very anti-Jacobin because he believed them to be extreme cruel radicals, He was also helping and protecting the royal family during the time when France was a Constitutional Monarchy than a Republic, he was Commander of the National Guard which protected the Royal Family from extremists who wanted to kill them. He was very lucky to not be executed by guillotine

To ease your heart: he wasn't out of contact with Hamilton or the Schuylers at the time. Angelica Schuyler (who had contacts in France that were alive) was able to talk to Washington (through Elizabeth and Hamilton) to find a way to send the money Lafayette was owed +from serving in the military for America during the Revolution+ to Lafayette's captors as a way to keep him and his family alive even though they were imprisoned. Lafayette also sent one of his children to live with the Schuylers until it was safe to return to France once the revolution was settled. Lafayette wasn't just abandoned by his friends, but the situation was tricky-both sides recognized this. If Lafayette and his family were released they'd be killed in the streets by violent and unreasonable revolutionaries solely because of their title. If he was imprisoned, the people bribed to keep him and his family alive at least had reason to keep them safe and so they were somewhat protected.
